Rubio Clobbers Crist In Yet Another Straw Poll

At Wednesday night's Palm Beach County REC meeting, the committee conducted a straw poll to gauge its members’ preference in the forthcoming  Republican Primary for US Senate.  And once  again, Marco Rubio delivered yet another backhanded slap to Governor Charlie Crist.   The final vote was Rubio- 90, Crist-17, Smith-11 and Thorpe-4.  Yet another convincing beatdown of our supposedly unbeatable governor!

The Gran Poobah of the Palm Beach REC, Sid Dinerstein, needs to be commended for overseeing this incredibly organized, professional, and most of all, fair poll.  The poll was conducted at the beginning of the meeting and the results were announced within minutes of the final count. Each members’ name was called out and then the members were handed a two page ballot-the ballot was distinctively red with black text. On the ballot, you were given the option to circle one of the eight candidates in the Senate race.

For those of you in Tallahassee who believe that REC straw polls are not significant-- and I might be referring to you, Mr. RPOF Chairman Jim Greer-- think again. REC members are the driving force behind every win or loss in the state. The activists are the ones that energize other Republicans to knock on doors, make phone calls, and most of all, donate!

Continuing to discount the growing evidence that the REC straw polls are providing is going to cost the RPOF establishment.  These straw polls show that Florida’s grassroots Republicans are tuned in, and they prove that issues, principles are what matter to most to them.  Florida’s Republican Party activists are stating pretty clearly that they will not accept a convenient conservative Republican-- especially one whose record is very liberal-- as their Senatorial candidate.

MARCO RUBIO

Go Marco.  Florida NEEDS a true Conservative to represent the people of Florida.  Not another R.I.N.O!  Those also need to be sent home come 2010.

Results/Message

The result of this straw poll was never in doubt. At the August meeting of the PBC REC Crist narrowly avoided censure, by just one vote. Even those that argued against censure were not fans of Governor Crist. RPOF Chairman Greer and Crist are seeing the results of the 9 straw polls that have now been held. But for some reason, like many establishment politicians, they aren't getting the message that the base of the Party is sending. Maybe when Charlie loses straw polls in Broward and Pinellas he'll see the light. What he ought to do is withdraw from the Senate race and go back to finishing his term as governor and then run for reelection. He needs to support actively and wholeheartedly our congressional nominees in all districts. He also needs to back the Party's nominee for US Senate. As the man whose face graces the RPOF membership card, I'd say Governor Crist sees himself as the leader of the State GOP. If that's the case, he needs to act the part. Only then can Crist run for higher office with grassroots support.

RUBIO'S RISING

It's rather hypocritical for Greer to minimize the effects of REC Straw Polls.   The REC's are a microcosm of each county's Republican constituents.  To diminish the decisions of these Precinct Committee men and women demonstrates RPOF's lack of respect for those who work hardest to elect Republicans.  He is in essense, telling people REC's are not credible.  And the fact he has to come out and make the defensive statement also demonstrates his/their fear of Marco's rising.  Charlie isn't the only horse in this race who is popular, but Marco has more than the ability to remember your name, shake your hand and give you the warmest smile.  He proves time and time again he embodies conservative principals.  Marco doesn't reinvent definitions of conservatism like Charlie Crist.  He knows the difference between what's in Webster's and what's in Urban Dictionary.

Tighten Up the Illegal Immigration Position

I am almost sold on Rubio, however, I think he has to take a harder line on illegal immigration. So far, I'm not pleased with his waffling on this issue - says one thing and does another - the same thing he criticizes Crist for.

It is time for Republicans to be discerning in the choice of which candidate they support. We should avoid a circumstance similar to the one that faced us last November - we voted for McCain only because he wasn't as bad a oBUMa.

I for one don't want to vote for Rubio just because he isn't as bad as Crist. I want to vote for him because he embraces all the true Conservative values. A word to the wise Marco - if you want to grab the brass ring start articulating your position on illegal immigrants - it is a major issue for the country and a major issue for our state.

Anonymous, First of all,

Anonymous, First of all, there were 6 bills, and he didn't let them die. He didn't let them die because they never came to a vote-never made it out of the first of 3 committees. Rubio is against any form of amnesty for illegal aliens-he is for legal immigration by enforcing existing laws.
