From The Los Angeles Times:School boards are prodded to take a stance in gay marriage debateSome trustees want their panels to take a public stand on Proposition 8, the initiative that would ban same-sex unions in California. Others say social issues don't belong in that forum. When it comes to political views, Jim Gibson of Vista and Mike Katz-Lacabe of San Leandro are at opposite ends of the spectrum.Gibson, 54, a father of four, is a conservative and an evangelical Christian; Katz-Lacabe, 40, describes his politics as "hippie-liberal-granola."But the two men have a bond: Both are school board members in small

UT: Aguirre Needs to Release Documents

This morning's editorial..... Release the documents Aguirre must comply with open-records law City Attorney Mike Aguirre likes to portray himself as a champion of open government. Yet, when it comes to releasing records from his own office, Aguirre is downright contemptuous of California's Public Records Act. Don't take our word for it. Consider the ruling of Superior Court Judge David Oberholtzer, who has ordered Aguirre to comply with the law and release documents requested by Judith Copeland, a San Diego attorney who is seeking a variety of public records from the City Attorney's Office. In an unusually stern ruling directed

From The California Progress Report By Bill Cavala:Anti-Democratic Republicans Run Roughshod Over the Principle of 'Majority' RuleWhen you begin with the premise that all men are created "equal", it follows that the only just decision-making mechanism counts each for one and no more than one. A majority, in a democracy, because it contains "more equals", has a moral right to make decisions for all.Our Constitution's bill of rights provides "checks" on the majority by putting certain actions beyond the provenance of government. But in the ordinary actions of government, majorities should rule.In the 1930's, in the midst of the great

The move came one day after Parra failed to vote for her own party's budget proposal. That proposal needed 54 votes -- the two-thirds majority needed to pass a budget in California -- but got only 45 votes. The vote came after four hours of debate during a special Sunday session.
Chula Vista Councilman Castaneda Joins Democrat Party

As reported over and over in Red County San Diego, embattled Republican Chula Vista Councilman Steve Castaneda has been considering a change of partisan affiliation for some time. Most local people thought he would probably become a "Decline to State" sometime over the summer and run as independent. Not so. Recently Castaneda re-registered as a Democrat. Castaneda is being challanged for his council seat by local realtor Republican Scott Vinson. In the June Primary, Vinson beat Castaneda by a narrow margin (Vinson 7,979/Castaneda 7,911/Aguilar 5,544/Moriarty 3,539). Considering the candidates, the November General is expected to be brutal.

Supervisor Pam Slater-Price, you've held office since before I moved to San Diego... why did you originally run, and do you believe you've accomplished what you set out to do? I was first appointed in 1982 to the San Dieguito Citizens Planning Group. I grew tired of watching the Board of Supervisors ignore our recommendations. I was especially bothered by the fact that when I testified at board hearings the supervisors would be talking to aides or on the phone. Not only did they not listen, but their financial house was a mess, and proper land use planning was
