Earlier in this year I wrote about the bridge/pedestrian bypass that Supervisor Janet Nguyen is trying to erect in Westminster. The video in that last post should give readers a clue as to how surprised the Council Members were when the first heard of this proposalTonight it is back on the Westminster City Council agenda. Listed as Item 5.3. (Bolsa Avenue Traffic Abatement Project), the item was placed on the docket by Mayor Margie Rice at the behest of Janet. For the past several days, Nguyen's office have been running newspaper advertisements and sending out press releases calling on her fellow

More Schroeder Amongst The Democrats

Mike Schroeder, Republican evil genius (at least in the fervid imaginations of his critics) is in Denver blogging for Total Buzz about the Democratic National Convention: a series of posts carrying the sobriquet "the Elephant In the Room...or "the Hall," whatever the situation is. The Dark Lord relays his close-up observation of the Obama-Hillary rift, makes a foray among the left-wing of the Democratic Left, and reports on the chaos at the California delegation hotel caused by...who else, anarchists.

Water Boards - Why Should We Care?

Nationally all of the attention is on the Presidential race with additional coverage of the expected widening Democrat majority in the Senate and House. Locally, the focus is on city council and school board races. Lost in the mix are the water board races. When discussing a water board, I don't mean torture, although those who have attended a water board meeting may consider it torture, albeit significantly less painful than what Sen. McCain endured - more on par with listening to Robert Byrd tell stories about his dog Billy. Why focus on water issues? There is a coming shortage, largely a

Prop. 6: Protecting Public Safety & Protecting Education

The folks over at the Prop. 6 campaign sent this over. The wording in the initiative is pretty clear that it's not supposed to affect education funding. I'm glad to see they were thinking about schools when they crafted this measure. As someone who's worked in four different schools, I think it's important for students to be safe and learning. The teachers unions only complain when the initiative is non-liberal, of course. It doesn't matter to them whether it actually affects students or the average teacher. Anybody remember Prop. 71, the stem cell bonds? According to the official voter information

Superior Court Run-Off: Carillo Gets Early Press

This just came in over the transom:Deputy DA Debra Carrillo got the early hometown press in Laguna Beach this weekend with and expose in the Laguna Beach Independent. From the article:Carrillo has set herself on another uphill climb: she survived a June heat among four candidates vying for a position on the county's Superior Court. She came in first among the four, yet lacked the 51 percent majority needed to win. In November, Carrillo faces another test, a run-off against attorney Kermit Marsh, a Westminster councilman and chairman of Garden Grove Hospital.Read the rest of the story here.

Campaign Group principal Bill Wachob, an architect of Loretta Sanchez's 1996 upset of Bob Dornan, is advising Cook. Redlands native Kevin Thurman, a Beltway campaign consultant most recently with Hillary Clinton, has come aboard as her campaign manager. Thurman has sent a letter to Rhonda Rohrabacher, Dana's wife and campaign manager, calling for three debates. Even

The Community Redevelopment Agency in Buena Park has been buying business properties from private companies. The buildings on some of these properties are demolished while others are left intact. The Agency then waits around for a new buyer. Why would the Buena Park Community Redevelopment Agency want to do this? One of the main reasons is to bring new entertainment related enterprises into the E-Zone. City governments have a poor performance record as real estate and business brokers. The old Movie Land Wax Museum property is still vacant years after it was purchased by the Buena Park Community Redevelopment Agency. The

Second warning: Republicans will probably need a strong drink after watching the video, if not before. In a shrewd move, Total Buzz recruited the Mike Schroeder to blog for them at the DNC (and likewise have Wylie Aitken blog for them at the RNC gathering in Minneapolis). It's also quite a statement on how the mainstream media is scrambling

Something for everyone in San Juan Capistrano

Looks like it is time to start going over the ballot statements of the local candidates, especially handicapping those challengers who really have a chance, versus those who write just for our entertainment. We will start with San Juan Capistrano, whose ballot statements have something for everyone. Laura Freese, Local Business Owner: Solid message for change, trying to argue she will not sell off the city piece by piece. Strong messages on traffic and small government. However, for some reason she decided to tell voters that she has a "Master's Degree in Taxation"! Wow, that will hurt. Evangeline Topa: No

I posted over at Guns & Rosaries about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's incredible claim yesterday on Meet the Press that the Catholic Church doctrine that life begins at conception is about about 500 years old.I am accustomed to the ignorance of pro-choice Catholic politicians, but to be ignorant on top of that?Hugh Hewitt and others takes her to CCD, so to speak..And Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver expresses his opinion that Senator Joe Biden should refrain from receiving Holy Communion due to his pro-choice stance and record. Not that Biden will listen, but one can hope that if the priest

Hutchens Says PSR Program "Working Very Well"

Sheriff Sandra Hutchens held a press conference this afternoon to clarify issues related to the Professional Service Responders program, which has been getting a black eye in the media lately.Hutchens made it clear she believes the PSR program itself is "working very well" and that she felt the media reporting had created mis perceptions about it. I'll blog about it at greater length tonight, but in the meantime, here's the audio (click the little play button): Sheriff Hutchens presser on PSR programI'll have video tonight or tomorrow.

Aesop Missed This Fable

It was entertaining to read Jim Silva's touching tribute to termed-out Assemblyman Bill Maze, R-Visalia. In case you missed it, Silva recounted the story of how Maze "once attended an auction to buy a thoroughbred and came away with a mule, which he rode home -- even after the mule threw him off and broke his arm." Hopefully, Silva saw the irony in the tale.Bill Maze is, of course, the genius behind a bit of nanny state legislation working its way through the Legislature - the lap dog ban. Maze reportedly authored his nanny state bill after seeing a motorist

What's The Deal With Ramirez?

The OC Register's story on Fr. Luis Ramirez conviction raises some important questions, such as why he was not required to register as sex offender. After all, he admits liquoring up his 17-year old victim before taking him to a hotel, where Ramirez tried to molest him. It's difficult to take seriously Fr. Ramirez's assurances this will never happen again. He already has a record for abusing alcohol, which is more than likely directly connected to this demonstrated, disordered sexual impulse toward teenage boys. There's no question in my mind that his order ought to defrock him. I hope he can

THE TAXMAN COMETH.....

If you didn't read last weeks post about the school bond issues, you might want to take a look at that post in the archives of redcounty.com. Your annual taxes, depending on your assessed valuation could be going up considerably. That translates into a higher house payment. It also translates into higher apartment rents and higher mobile park rents as owners of that land pass these costs on to their renters. Just how much will your taxes go up? The one District grossly understates this in their ballot argument; I don't know who did their math but its going to
