P.E. to D.A. Pacheco: Stop the Self-Serving Rhetorical Outbursts

Posted by: Editorial Staff | 07/10/2008 1:45 PM

It's often been said that the most dangerous place on the planet is between Rod Pacheco and a television camera.  The Press Enterprise calls out Pacheco on his grandstanding in this editorial.

Crime Bluster

Political posturing and half-baked threats from Riverside County's district attorney do nothing to protect public safety in Riverside -- and in fact, could disrupt the city's policing strategy and community relations. District Attorney Rod Pacheco needs to end the self-serving rhetorical outbursts and let Riverside police manage the city's law enforcement.

The district attorney erupted after revelations last month that the city police had yet to make an arrest under an anti-gang injunction, five months after a judge approved it. The district attorney and Riverside police filed the injunction against 114 East Side Riva gang members in August, with great publicity. The injunction bars gang members from a variety of activities, such as being out after 10 p.m., wearing gang apparel and associating with other gang members.

Pacheco last week threatened to intervene in Riverside to enforce the injunction, and accused the city police of doing a poor job: "Though we have deferred in the past to the local agency, we will defer no longer. I will not sit idly by while East Side Riva gang members terrorize the community."

Yellow journalism at its best. This is the same newspaper that two weeks ago ran an article criticizing the Riverside Police Dept. for its failure to act on the injunction, and now they praise the RPD for its own inaction. This is just inconsistent, does the PE want RPD to enforce the injunction, or not?

It seems that the PE is mostly leveling attacks at Pacheco without even noting their own hypocrisy. How typical.

This is the same paper whose classified section was used to run a death threat against Mr. Pacheco and his family - an "ad" which later was found to have been purchased and placed by an employee of the very paper who has since never passed up an opportunity to criticize our DA. The Press Enterprise was publicly embarrassed by having one of their own employees plead guilty to using their paper to engage in criminal activity against the DA.

God bless Rod Pacheco and his family. We should be thanking him for all he does and risks for our community.

Sometimes I feel like Rod is too cozy with the unions but he is 100% right on this one.

Riverside needs to crack down on crime and clean up University street - and their is no better place to start than with the East Side Riva.

What on earth could be a bigger priority for the RPD?

Apparently the only thing the RPD cares about it keeping the peace with the murderous, drug dealing gangs of their city.

Rod Pacheco is scum. He has tied up our court systems by overcharging innocent people, refused to abide by a simple monetary penalty when ADA's are extremely late (hence tying up the court system even more) And now he has launched a ridiculous 'gang task force' knowing that the plan was not enforceable. Rod is just spinning our wheels so the smoke will cover up his illegal use of tax dollars, like paying his babysitter. Let's try to give the Riverside Police Department a little support. They are keeping your streets safe you know, what is Rod doing for you?
