Yesterday, The Desert Sun endorsed Assemblyman John J. Benoit for the 37th State Senate seat over rival Russ Bogh, praising Benoit as a "known consensus builder who listens to his constituents and works well with other lawmakers." The newspaper's editorial board contrasted the two candidates by citing an impressive record of accomplishment and ability to take principled stands:
"Benoit, 57, of Bermuda Dunes, now represents the 64th Assembly District. He fought against an increase in the vehicle tax, co-authored legislation to increase the homeowners' property tax exemption for senior citizens, worked to add judges, require day-care centers to disclose past safety violations, and he pushed for state legislation to force the federal government to reimburse California for money spent incarcerating undocumented criminals."
The editorial concludes, "Benoit is a well-rounded politician who deserves the Republican nomination for the 37th Senate District."
"I am honored to see the support for my campaign continue to grow throughout the 37th Senate District, from a majority of City Councilmembers and local government officials, to community leaders, and now to a major respected newspaper," replied Assemblyman Benoit. "My campaign team and I are working hard and will continue to do so through Election Day!"
