The McCarty Campaign Goes Negative

Posted by: Dave Everett | 03/30/2008 4:28 PM

I've been getting these really creative press releases from the Kelly McCarty for Assembly campaign that are designed to look like internal memos, but they are blast e-mailing them out.  Makes you feel like you got ahold of some top secret stuff and they are filled with strong accusations against her opponent Brian Nestande.

Kelly McCarty: 67 Days Left

Kelly:

Have a great weekend.

We have now finished walking the City of Riverside for the first time.  Keep up the good work on the ground in the other parts of the district.

Re: 67 Days until Election Day!

We are now 67 days out from the primary election.  Things are really starting to heat up now.  Nothing like the heat of battle to get us focused.

It is all about execution at this point.

Early this morning I was reminded of the problems a campaign has when it doesn't file all the paperwork appropriately.

I just happened to have a copy of the Riverside Press Enterprise from April 27, 1999 sitting near my desk and read on page B2A - (I added the underlines to make it clear.)

Rep. Mary Bono, R-Palm Springs, last week paid a $3,500 fine for failing to identify her campaign as the source of a letter and a door hanger.  "It was my mistake," said Brian Nestande, Bono's chief of staff, then her campaign manager.   "I'm not going to argue.  We're going to pay for it and that's that. "In a decision reached in January, but made public late last week, the Federal Election Commission found that Bono's campaign committee broke federal election laws.  The letter in question, which claimed to be "From the Desk of Seymour Kaplan," was one of eight direct mail pieces the campaign put out just before the April 7, 1998, primary election, Bono's campaign workers told the commission.  This one, which omitted the "Paid for . . .  " disclaimer, was printed by a different contractor than the other seven, they said.  They also said they did not know that the door hanger reading "Vote Tuesday April 7th United States Representative Mary Bono" required the disclaimer as well.  Both errors were made "in the heat of the battle" as the election neared, Nestande said.

We are getting into the "heat of battle" so we have to make sure that we don't make the same mistake.

Brian is really proving to be a wealth of information on how to run a political campaign.  We are learning so much.

Remember to please keep this to yourself.

Here is another one:

Kelly McCarty: 70 Days Left

Kelly:

If we use the standards set by Brian at the last reporting period he would
have to admit that you did better this time.

Keep up the good work and remember to keep the attached memo to yourself.

Re: 70 Days until Election Day!

____________________________________________________________

We are now 70 days out from the primary election.

Yesterday was a big day since the fundraising reports were available on the Secretary of State's website.  It was a great report for you.  You've raised more and have more cash on hand than your opponent, lobbyist Brian Nestande.

I was not sure what to write for a press release, so I looked at Brian's from last time. That was the one where he claimed --- "his candidacy clearly has hampered McCarty's ability to raise money since Nestande entered the race."

So since you've raised more in this period and have more cash on hand, we will just send out his release from last period with the names changed around.  It would be fair to say that your money raised and his opposition research report will hamper his fundraising.

You should know that Assembly Republican Leader Villines and Speaker Nunez look over fundraising reports very carefully to see how potential caucus members are doing. They are both justifiably looking at Brian Nestande's total and putting it in their column.

Fran Florez (AD 30), Joan Buchanan (AD 15), Arlie Ricassa (AD 78), and Greg Pettis (AD 80) are probably thrilled to see Nestande doing so well since his money could very well end up funding their races in November.

Tomorrow we can talk about Brian's ballot designation and what he orders for lunch at most meetings.

It appears you have forwarded my memos around.  People are actually sending me requests to get "on the list".  This is Top Secret stuff - with a list that has grown from 75 to 223 recipients.

Remember to please keep this to yourself.

Well, you don't see stuff like this from campaigns that feel they are ahead.
