Bono-Mack Seeks $ To Increase Use Of Alternative Fuels & Cleaner Vehicles

Bono2.jpgI pulled this off Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack's website from last week.  Even though my gut reaction is to oppose any increase in federal spending, building up "our nation's energy portfolio" and reducing "our dependence on imported oil" seem like much more laudable goals than a lot of other government programs.  I like that Mary is focused on the environment, but no where in the press release does she acknowledge the idea of man-made global warming.

BONO MACK SEEKS MORE FUNDING FOR CLEAN CITIES PROGRAM

Washington, Mar 19 - Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45) today urged for more funding for the Department of Energy's Vehicle Technologies Program, commonly known as the Clean Cities Program, which helps increase the use of alternative fuels and cleaner vehicles on America's roads. Pointing to current air quality challenges and the need to reduce our nation's dependence on foreign oil, Bono Mack was joined by several colleagues in sending a letter to the House Appropriations Committee requesting $25 million for the Clean Cities Program for Fiscal Year 2009.

"It is clear that we need to invest our resources in developing clean, alternative fuels," said Bono Mack. "In order for our country to move away from fossil fuels, we need to facilitate research on new technologies from a federal level, encourage increased use of alternative fuels, and raise awareness about the importance of improving vehicle fuel economy. Our desert communities can receive assistance through this program to start localized initiatives that will help benefit the entire district and our country"

Grants issued by the Department of Energy's Clean Cities Program are the primary federal means to support alternative fuel vehicle technology and infrastructure deployment activities.

"We need to build our nation's energy portfolio, reduce our dependence on imported oil and help ensure a healthier environment for the future. The Clean Cities Program is a key way to expand the use of alternative fuels in communities throughout our country. We should look forward to future energy sources by investing in the necessary infrastructure and development today."
