Pate Vows To Fight On In 64th AD
Posted by: Dave Everett | 02/11/2008 10:14 AM
I guess I jumped the gun yesterday, when I posted that the AD64 race is down to Kelly McCarty and Brian Nestande.
I received this post from John Pate yesterday vowing not only to fight on, but ripping Russ Bogh's choice of Hawaiian shirts.
Still, it is not a good sign for a candidate to be publicly considering dropping out due to lack of financial backing.
John seems like a nice guy (excluding the Hawaiian shirt comment) but a bit over-his head in a partisan Assembly race. But I stand corrected - it is still a 3 way fight between Nestande, McCarty and Pate.

Dave,
That's a bad headline. I believe that the post I made, after returning from my father's funeral in Alabama on Feb.2, said "If something does not change in the next few weeks" & "I will make an announcement AT THE PROPER TIME".
That means that AFTER I have spoken to the people I need to speak to, then I will make a decision and announce it. That still stands. But it seems that the eagerness to get me out of this race tells me that people are nervous that I might actually win it.
Besides, I can't get out until I see those video-tapes of me doing vulgar comedy material from either Benoit's people or Bogh's people. I would hate for them to have to destroy something so valuable, especially since they cannot possibly exist. I tried to contact Benoit, but he was running around the Sacramento halls still trying to get people not to support me, and I tried Bogh, but I understand he is over in Hawaii standing in line at the Don Ho estate sale trying to get some new discount shirts. (And by the way, according to the post I was responding to in my first e-mail, they STILL are not in my Assembly race, so why do they even care?)
Seriously however, I can & will make my decisions soon, and I will make my own announcements. But thanks for all of the help. That's the same kind of help Huckabee is getting right now from some quarters. Believe me, we can both put together our own words & communication better than anyone else. Please allow me to do it my way.

That's not fair, john. Russ has some big boy suits now. They're great, cute knickers for pants and everything.
Thanks Dave. I appreciate the correction.
I'll keep you posted.

Pate is truly a gifted comedian - his Assembly campaign is one big friggin' joke.
In response to HAHA.
Having known Mr. Pate for some time now, I am sure he appreciates your attempt at humor.
It is razor-sharp wit like yours that keeps him in the business.
But if his candidacy frightens you too, then at least one person is taking it seriously.
John- Given the current state of California's fiscal crisis, the voters are not in the mood to hire a comedian for serious legislative matters. Drive North on the I15 and return to the Vegas nightclub stage where you belong.
PS- One thing I do admire about Russ is he shares my passion for Hawaiian shirts.
Phil,
I agree with you regarding the state of our fiscal crisis. I think that if you were familiar with my record in educating the past two decades of students in those communicative fields, as well as in argumentation & serious debate, then perhaps your opinion might change. (Just ask one of my former students, Nathan Fletcher, who is also running for the same office in San Diego.)I obviously can't change your view in a blog, and 'Yes' I am probably fighting an uphill battle in THIS election to change anyone's perception on the matter.
So in short, When I need to be funny, I have had 30+ years of experience to do it well in television, radio, and yes occasionally in Vegas.
But when I need to be serious about serious matters, the record is clear on that too. In fact, I am one of the VERY few people to silence Oprah Winfrey on her own show while answering a serious question. (So I do not feel I need to be tutored on serious matters nor how to communicate them, but you can still feel free to do it if you wish.) It's just that people have not been made aware of those positions yet, and you have had multiple opportunities to ask me, but you seemed to never want to engage me in conversation. Perhaps in the future, you will take that opportunity and discover that I am more than a punchline factory.(Thank Goodness the writer's strike is over. I could throw in a funny line here, but I will refrain.)
However, I feel that I definitely OWE Russ Bogh a brand new Hawaiian shirt. I will get it to him asap.
Thanks Phil, and I will keep you posted on my decisions.

John I have decided to give you a solid bit of advice after reading all your postings. You need a campaign manager and the campaign manager I suggest for you is one of the best Riverside County has to offer- Dan Walters
How it must feel, knowing what you know, Phil, to continually attempt to hurt people. If you have truly read all of my posts,(and I stress "MY" posts, because I cannot speak for any friends or students or other interested parties who have written anything,) you will probably note that I have never mentioned my opponents in any negative ways.
I have had good conversations with ALL of them. Angel and I have joked about carpooling to save money. Kelly called me about three weeks ago and I spoke to Brian personally a few weeks ago, ALL to discuss our status.
Any one of them can fill the seat for this district.
It has been enjoyable to have lively banter regarding hawaiian shirts & Jay Leno etc., and if you have followed any of the more notable events that any number of us, Brian, Angel, Kelly, and myself have attended and spoken to, then you will know that we are all concerned about the things that matter to the district most.
As noted earlier, I know when to be comical and I know when to be serious, and I know how to do both well. Perhaps the heading for this article was misleading as well, since I decided to reassess things a few weeks ago.
I had contacted Eric Linder two days ago to write something for me for the end of next week, because he is someone I can rely on, and I suppose Dave or Darin or any number of others could do a good job as well. But I suppose I should phrase and frame things my way instead and do it on my terms, in order to allow others not to be involved.
And I guess I would rather step back quietly as a footnote in the 'comment section', rather than a huge headline,(The general public will not see my name on the ballot). But I will still be a good and productive university department chair and a good productive entertainer, as well as a very concerned political member of this 64th district, concerned about the things that matter most.
I guess I do this selfishly, in order for you not to feel the need to attack friends or associates or well-respected people in the community, but I hope you will see the futility of it as well. You may ask Brian, or Angel, or Kelly if they have any bad feelings toward me and I think they will all say "No they do not", because I have tried to conduct myself in good manner, and enjoy this ride. "Yes" I have had fun, and "yes" I have been able to interject humor when appropriate, and "Yes" I have also been able to speak to the critical matters appropriately as well. So you see, I can multi-task.
And don't get me wrong, I can get into the fray and mix it up and take the political heat when necessary in order to get the job done, and will probably be back at a later date to do so, when it is more appropriate and when it is my time. But for now I will wait. So instead of delaying a week or two to make the announcement, I am respectfully doing it now.
Tonight when I lay down to rest, I will turn to my wife and ask her if she is proud of me. If you wish, you can do the same in your household, and I hope that the things that are troubling you inside can be healed.
John Pate
Dear Mr. Pate
Your not running is like a tree falling in the forest on a deserted mountain top, did any one notice ?
Your 15 seconds of fame now seem to be over.
Dear P P,
Trite
Mr Pate,
Didn't you notice?
