Press-Enterprise and the Rancho Mirage City Council Urge "Yes on 94-97"

arnold_150.jpgLooks like Riverside County's local Indian tribes are in full campaign mode.  Not only have they been running a commercial with the Governor endorsing Props. 94-97, but now they have secured endorsements from the Press-Enterprise and the Rancho Mirage City Council.

OPINION: Yes on 94-97
The decision on Props. 94 through 97 on the Feb. 5 ballot depends on voters sorting through a battle between competing special interests to find the public's stake. One crucial point should make that task easier: California is better off with the new tribal gambling compacts these measures represent than continuing with the current agreements. The four ballot measures are a referendum on new gambling compacts the governor and Legislature approved last year. A yes vote would ratify deals with the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians near Temecula, the Morongo Band of Mission Indians near Cabazon, the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation near El Cajon and the Agua Caliente Band of Mission Indians in Palm Springs.

Rancho Mirage City Council votes to support tribe
Rancho Mirage leaders are supporting the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians as it seeks approval for an amended gaming compact with the state. City officials voted 4-0 Thursday, with Councilman Gordon Moller absent, to adopt a resolution in support of the tribe. "The city is duty-bound to demonstrate our willingness to stand with the tribe in support of the duly negotiated compact," Mayor Dana Hobart said. The new deal, which was ratified by state lawmakers and recently approved by the U.S. Department of Interior, is on the February ballot for California voters to ratify or reject.
