This is about a week old already, but I see the media give half stories and half truths so often that I couldn't let this go by. Congressman Ken Calvert is setting the record straight on his support of SCHIP, which is basically taxpayer funded free healthcare for little kids.
Democrats Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill) and Diana DeGette (D-Col.) sent out a letter 'imploring' Calvert to change his position, and I'm sure implying that he doesn't care about the healthcare of little kids since he opposed this measure.
What they did not mention is that their version of SCHIP covers illegal immigrants (providing another incentive for illegals to come to America and live in the shadows making slave wages) and that they have never even contact Calvert to discuss the issue. Classic grandstanding on the part of Schakowsky and DeGette.
Democrats are digging deep as they try to muster the votes to overturn President Bush's veto of the State Children's Health Insurance Program.
With a showdown over SCHIP set for Wednesday in the House, Democrats figure they need about 14 Republicans to change their votes on the legislation in order to garner the necessary two-thirds majority. But with the most moderate Republicans already on board, Democrats are targeting 50 members, including Rep. Ken Calvert, R-Corona, who voted against the legislation.
Proponents of the measure sent out a news release in which they "implore" Calvert and the others to change their minds. Reps. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill, and Diana DeGette, D-Col., and a handful of activists followed up with a Friday teleconference.
They said the target list is made up freshman members, those facing tough races and those most likely to switch their vote. They didn't mention Calvert and said the list amounts to "the best of what's left."
Calvert shot back with this statement:
"It is interesting that Reps. Schakowsky and DeGette have never approached me personally to talk about SCHIP yet are speaking with the local California media 'imploring' me to change my position. I support SCHIP -- I voted for the original legislation and am on a bill to reauthorize the program. I do not support the Democratic version of the reauthorization that would allow illegal immigrants and adult's access to government-funded health benefits intended for low-income children.
"Perhaps I should hold a 'teleconference' with Illinois and Colorado media highlighting the anti-border fence, pro-amnesty positions of Reps. Schakowsky and DeGette."
