Sen. Jim Battin Running for Lt. Governor?

Thumbnail image for Battin.jpgRiverside County State Senator Jim Battin is raising large amounts of money for a possible run at lieutenant governor in 2010 according to this Thursday's Press-Enterprise Political Notebook.

Battin is a solid conservative and I for one thought he was headed to the Riverside Board of Supervisors (Roy Wilson's seat) after Sacramento, but I guess he is keeping his options open.

Money Matters

Term limits prevent state Sen. Jim Battin, R-La Quinta, from running for re-election next year, but he has raised some big money from area GOP county committees in recent months.

Last week, the Committee to Elect Jim Battin received $36,500 from the San Diego County Republican Central Committee.

In July, the Battin committee got a check for $28,500 from the Riverside County Republican Party.

Under state campaign finance law, lawmakers serving their last term cannot raise money and have to give away unused cash when they leave office. The exception is if they have declared their intent to run in a future election.

Battin has filed a statement of intent to run for lieutenant governor in 2010.

Battin spokeswoman Kimberly Glassman recently said Battin is still deciding if he will run for statewide office.

"People ask him all the time about what his future plans are," she said. "Part of weighing his options is to test your ability to effectively fundraise."

Battin is better off saving his cash for a county office, the odds are against Republicans in this state. Though if he is going to make a dive for it, I guess there is still a shot since John Garamendi will vacate his office to run for Gov.
