From the moment he stepped onto the gridiron to the moment he breathed his last, President Ford was a hero admired for his courage, honesty, ability to make the tough decision, and his sense of humor. His career began in the heartland of America’s great industry at a time when the engines of freedom were built almost exclusively in Michigan. From there, he thrilled the nation as a young athlete, showing the quiet toughness that he would use so brilliantly as a member of the House of Representatives, where he rose to Republican Leader during the turbulent protest era. It was from that position of leadership that he proved the ability to lead and earn the trust of both parties. In this critical position, he answered the call of history to serve as Vice-president and then ultimately as the President who quickly reestablished America’s trust in its leadership.
Facing very long odds, President Ford united his Party and very nearly the nation in a close election that proved that even in the worst circumstances great leaders can excite, compete, and win. Upon his retirement, we in Riverside County were honored to gain him full time, where he and his devoted wife, Betty, became national leaders in health care and treatment. Staying active in their community well into the President’s twilight, they are a true tribute to the American family.
Riverside County, California and every American owe a debt of gratitude to the quiet decency, steely resolve, and gentle laughter of a truly great man. God bless President Gerald Ford and may God bless America.
