UCI Professor Spreads More Misinformation

Posted by: Jonathan Constantine | 07/01/2008 12:04 PM

UC Irvine History Professor Jon Wiener has just thrown in his two cents on behalf of the University administration. Read his article in The Nation very carefully. It's quite interesting how he remains rather dismissive of the numerous and well documented incidents of antisemitism at UC Irvine, instead choosing to dismiss charges against the school as "bogus." Wiener also refers to those who abhor hate speech as "right-wing Zionists" and identifies the three Senators who were troubled by the OCR report by political party (Republican) and name (Jon Kyl, Sam Brownback, and Arlen Specter), without even acknowledging the names and party affiliation of the five Congressmen and women who also requested that the OCR re-open their investigation (Yes, all five were Democrats).

Lead among them was Representative Brad Sherman (D-CA) who characterized the scene at UC Irvine by the following:

The titles of some of the lectures at the event -- "Death to Apartheid: A Farewell to Zionism" and "Silence is Consent: Stop the Palestinian Holocaust" -- are also disturbing. And, the guests invited to give these lectures have a record of making anti-Semitic statements. As is observable on YouTube, one of the lecturers, Amir Abdel Malik Ali, stated in a speech at UCI in May 2006, "The truth of the matter is: [Israel's] days are numbered. We will fight you until we are either martyred or until we are victorious." It should be of concern that a speech given at UCI calls for "martyrdom" - the euphemism for suicide bombing.
Wiener  - who is apparently no apt student of legal history - attempts to disqualify Jewish experiences with racism by arguing that the invocation of national origin discrimination (Title VI, 1964 Civil Rights Act) is a capitulating endorsement of the ZOA position.  Au contraire, Dr. Wiener, its the law. In the Supreme Court Case, Shaare Tefila Congregation v. Cobb (1987), the court held in a dispute regarding a synagogue painted with antisemitic slogans:

Jews can state a § 1982 claim of racial discrimination, since they were among the peoples considered to be distinct races, and hence within the protection of the statute at the time it was passed. They are not foreclosed from stating a cause of action simply because the defendants are also part of what today is considered the Caucasian race.
Wiener clearly didn't make it out of his ivory tower to hear some of the most pervasive forms of anti-Semitism in the 2008 edition of the MSU's hate week. If he still believes the charges are "bogus," then he surely missed Muhammad al-Asi's speech on Monday, May 12, 2008. Here is a portion of al-Asi's speech:

*As the years go by you are going to feel more cornered in the nation state ghetto you
constructed.

*Just like you (Jews) didn't learn from exile, you didn't learn from ghetto life.

*You left the ghettos of Europe, there were no ghettos to speak about in Muslim Countries. You left those ghettos and came in the fashion that you did, with all the bloodshed that went with it and still continues.

*You came to the holy land, which you desecrated and blasphemed with every decision that you made and still are making and then you realize that you are in a territory of hostilities around you. These hostilities didn't come from nowhere, these hostilities are a reaction to all the misery and all the hostility that you brought with you.

*Then as you realized you have located yourself you began to build a wall, a barrier, around the country you are living in, isn't this a grand definition of a ghetto!
Wiener also invoked a letter by five Jewish students in early April alleging that "Jewish students are physically safe and secure on our campus." However, he didn't didn't mention that those very same students characterized the Muslim Student Union's events as "threatening" in a press release issued in mid-May:

In the upcoming week the pro-Israeli Students of the University of California, Irvine will witness acts of hatred from fellow students. Ring Road, a main road on UCI's campus, will have a makeshift wall which will have pictures, articles, and a bloodied Israeli flag that blames Israel and Jews for a so-called Palestinian Holocaust in Israel. This threatening event will be taking place all week.
But why simply rely on the fickleness of five student "leaders?" Why not cite the several Jewish and supportive non-Jewish students who testified before the OCR and the "ad hoc" task force as witnesses and victims to anti-Semitism? Are they ignorant and misinformed? Or are they not telling the truth?

Using Weiner's logic, it simply doesn't matter. Jewish students can and will endure incessant persecution, and should never have the right to address their racial grievances.

don't know anything about Wiener, but after reading his article in the Nation, I suspect that he is approaching this issue from a liberal, politically-correct perspective.

Often a writer's language gives away their agenda, and Johnathan has hit the nail on the head in pointing this out. Using terms like "Right-wing Zionists" and identifying concerned senators as "Republicans" is illustrative.

Does Wiener really think that all of us who object to the MSU and their speakers are "Right-wing Zionists-or even Zionists"? Does he really want to split legal hairs in defining which groups are entitled to protection from acts of hate? In my view, all groups should be protected equally. Unfortunately, for many liberals, it all boils down to who the victim is and who the offender is. Certain victims and certain offenders do not fit into their liberal agenda.

Wiener mocks reports of swastikas and rock throwing, yet concedes one example of each. Is he aware of the recent caricature of Ariel Sharon shown on the MSU mock Israeli wall? Is he aware of the recent reported incident where a Jewish student was allegedly followed to her car by MSU males and surrounded after filming a Malik Ali speech? Maybe Wiener would like to hear from Jonathan or Reut Cohen regarding their experiences in filming MSU events.

This reminds me a bit of the Jamiel Shaw case in LA where an innocent young black high schooler was shot down for no reason. The defendant is an illegal alien gang member who had just been released from jail without his immigration status being checked. Yet, when the Shaws turned to the city in an effort to have LA's Special Rule 40 amended to allow cops to pro-actively remove illegal alien gang members from the streets, they were met with nothing but opposition. Even black activists have refused to take the Shaw's side since it doesn't fit into their liberal agenda.

In the case of Wiener, I suspect that his position on anti-Semitism at UCI being fomented by the MSU and their speakers is formed by his political agenda.

To paraphrase Wiener's own words, I know the problem at UCI is real. I teach here too.

Hey Jews, here is a tip.

If you dont like the concept of Free Speech get the heck out of the USA.

Go move to the Jewish hell-hole that is the State of Israel, where presidents are rapists and prime ministers are terrorists.

Judaism is a mental disorder.

Nor did he ever answer my questions regarding beheadings, Al Qaeda, 9-11 and all that, which leads to still suspect that he is from msu.

Judaism is a mental disorder.

Just look at how Johnny Boy keeps buying the lie of the "jew race".

Jews are NOT a race.

Jews are just rejects of the White Race pretending to be Middle Eastern.

Jews are wanna-be semites. Posers.

Jews are the scum of humanity, and a tumor of the world.

Jews bring death and destruction to wherever they go.

Judaism is a mental disorder.

Hey bigot--

I'm a Middle Eastern Jew. I don't look white at all and my roots are exclusively Middle Eastern. More than 50% of Israel is just like me... MIDDLE EASTERN JEWS.

My family isn't from Spain. We're originally from Syria and Iraq (Babylonia). I'd be sorely out of place in Europe.

Middle Eastern Jews are Mizrahim (Easterners). The term Sephardic is used today to encompass Mizrahim as well.

You're hatred has made you blind.

Jerusalem isn't even mentioned once in Islamic texts. However, it's mentioned over and over again (Israel is as well) in the Hebrew text.

What are you barking about now? Are you stating that Jewish texts say Rome isn't holy to Christians/Catholics. No where does it say that. The fact is that Israel, which is around one percent of the Middle East, has always had a Jewish presence and is the Jewish homeland. This land was initially called the "Palestine Mandate" (spoils of the Turkish empire) and was broken up by the British. The part that is Israel today was largely inhabitable and plagued with disease. The few Arabs who lived there before the establishment of Israel sold their land. After the period of the Holocaust and the mass exodus of Jews from the Arab world, Israel was founded.

I don't think you're Catholic. I have a feeling you're a Muslim fanatic who hates Jews and uses sites like "Jew Watch" to validate your irrational hatred. If you are a Christian or Catholic, your religion has more in common with the Jewish religion than any other religion on earth.

Also, regarding Sephardim and Mizrahim, here is a brief history lesson for you regarding the fact that these Jews are indigenous to the Middle East since biblical times:

Mizrahi Jews or Mizrahim, (Hebrew: מזרחים, Standard Mizraḥim Tiberian Mizrahim ; "Easterners"), also referred to as Edot HaMizrach (Communities of the East) are Jews descended from the Jewish communities of the Middle East, North Africa, Central Asia and the Caucasus. With the exception of Yemenite Jews, who are sometimes included but more often considered to comprise a group in their own right, the Mizrahi category includes Jews from the Arab world and adjacent countries... including Iraqi Jews, Syrian Jews, Lebanese Jews, Persian Jews, Bukharian Jews, Maghrebi Jews, Berber Jews and Kurdish Jews, as well as communities such as Mountain Jews and Georgian Jews, and among the Jews of India and Pakistan the Baghdadi Jews (descendants of relatively recent Iraqi Jews settled in the last few centuries, in contrast to Jewish communities of the Indian subcontinent established millennia earlier).

I stopped commenting to this Marcus a while ago because I got sick of it... but in the case of Palestine belonging to Arabs I just can't help it.

To compare Vatican City's relationship with Christians to Arab's relationship with Palestine insults Christianity more than Judaism. Islam is a fraudulent cult and an extremely poorly engineered dualism posing as a monotheism in the 'Abrahamic' tradition. (I'm sorry to use the term 'Abrahamic' because I think it is the stupidest term). Islam has roots more in Gnosticism than any other religious traditions, the rest of its attributes are owed to secular Bedouin principles and some laws lifted from Judaism itself. It is a religion that made itself through violent conquests, those conquests being the real lifeline of the 'faith.'

The Muslims claim Jerusalem to be its third holiest site because of the lie that Ishmael, son of Abraham and Hagar, is the descendent of Arabs and tied this to 'Al Aqsa' (really the Temple Mount) by changing the story of Abraham's test of faith by swapping Isaac for Ishmael. They also claim, ironically, that Muhammad ascended from that site, but his tomb is in Medina... the second holiest site, how they manage this is beyond me.

One thing I agree with you about is that Muslims are stupid. I have witnessed this first hand with the cavemen at UCI.

Of course Israel is the Jewish homeland. Jews were pushed out of ancient Israel and settled in Arab countries like Iraq, Libya, Syria, etc. That is why those Jews are known as Mizrahim. Some went back and settled in Jerusalem and never left the region. Sephardim settled in Spain and Portugal. Ashkenazim also have a claim to Israel as they are Jews who largely settled in western Europe rather than other Middle Eastern lands. Ancient Israel was an empire that extended farther than Israel does today.

The land of Israel has a huge historical significance to Jews. The Qu'ran doesn't mention "Jerusalem" even once because Mecca is the holy place of the Muslims.

You clearly know nothing about the Hebrew bible, Judaism or Israel. Your primary source of information is a bigoted and rabidly antisemitic website. Marcus, do you salute your poster of Adolph Hitler every morning when you wake up? Other names you have used on this site include "Jew Killer 007" and a few other twisted ones. Like I said before... you need to seek some professional psychiatric help.
