Peterson Tearing, Dormitorio Pacing
Posted by: Jonathan Constantine | 05/10/2008 6:31 PM
Myself, along with a couple of other students took painstaking efforts to post flyers around campus to publicize both the Nonie Darwish and David Horowitz lectures. Following two separate rounds of flyering, Dean Peterson ordered them removed from all premises. In the meantime, POSTERS ADVERTISING MSU HATE WEEK REMAIN UN-DEFILED.
Update: Commenter Brett Nemeth shares a similar account of Peterson as a student in the late 1980's:
When I headed the college republicans and the pro Israel club at UCI in the late 80's, early 90's, I had the same problem with Sally Peterson and Randy Lewis (who is now retired). We put up signs for a rally with 5 Orange County Supervisors to support the troops and she ordered them down. They were immediately up again and we threatened her with litigation if necessary. She was pissed and did everything to try and stop the event.
This scenario happened a few other times as well.
And not to be outdone...when Sally's dog-robber Edgar Dormitorio (Dean of Judicial Affairs) isn't listening to the MSU speakers starry eyed and policing their events for infidels, he paces paranoid outside in apparent protest of more civilized forums. Via Gary Fouse:
Dormitorio, for his part, was pacing outside the hall where Darwish spoke, yet would not come in to hear what she had to say. Why is this? Is it because they were unsympathetic to Ms Darwish's point of view? Was it because they were afraid to offend the Muslim Student Union? A combination of the two? Ms Darwish's theme was a rejection of hate. Yet, that was apparently not of interest to those who teach and lead UC-Irvine. They would rather pander to a tiny minority of students who have brought national disrepute to their campus.
What a collection of empty suits.

As a mother of a Jewish UCI student, I have been following this blog, and appreciate the information you convey. With regard to this story, I do have a few questions: Do flyers need approval prior to posting, and if so, did you gain or attempt to gain it? Was a reason for their removal given, and if so, what was it? Was there an ostensible reason given for the Judiciary Dean's presence? And what is a Judiciary Dean anyway? Thanks for your response.
To UCI parent,
Though your specific question was not directed to me, I do want to tell you one thing. I have been teaching part-time at UCI for 10 years, and overall, the campus is a joy to be on. 99% of the students are not involved in this ugliness. I would say that over 50% of the student body is Asian-American, and they are there to get an education and enjoy their college experience. When you see them involved in outside activities, it is charitable in nature.
It is only a tiny minority on campus that is causing problems, but it is a serious problem, which the university refuses to recognize. Indeed, it seems there is a certain amount of sympathy among faculty and administrators for the activities of the MSU and their inciteful speakers. Why else is the MSU receiving money from the university coming out of tuition fees? In effect, your money is being used to bring in speakers that glorify terrorism against Israeli civilians.

Lying isn't a good thing to be doing when claiming to be patriotic.
The posters advertising for Noni Darwish and David Horowitz both failed to meet the administration's requirements for being posted. A post-til date and the name of the organization that is sponsoring the event must be on the poster.
MSU's Palestine Awareness Week posters remain "undefiled" because MSU follows the administrations rules and receive no special treatment.
UCI obviously loves anti-semitism. It's reputation is only getting worse by the day.
This Nazi who likes ordering posters to be torn down can fuck off.
Mr. Fouse, Thank you for your response. I am deeply troubled by the tenor of the activities and the vitriolic tenor of discussions, and, of course, the use of my money. I was unaware of the militant anti-semitism and lack of a cohesive student body before my child enrolled. I think I will take a trip down to campus this week to see some of the speakers, and the listeners, myself if my schedule permits, having only seen parts of talks on YouTube. And, depending on my comfort level with UCI, my child may be "encouraged" by me to submit transfer applications next year. To the author of this blog and to the other bloggers on this issue, please know that at least one parent reads religiously and appreciates your efforts.
I would encourage you to hear for yourself what is being said. Mohammed Al-Asi speaks today at the flagpoles at 12. Don't miss Amir Abdel Malik Ali who is also speaking. I am not sure of the day and time, but one day this week he will be at the flagpoles at 12 and also does an evening appearance.
Actually you can see the schedule on the msu-uci website.
fenrear:
MSU defiles UCI and America with it's hatred and filth.
No prior approval is required for posting non-commercial materials providing all other rules regarding those materials are followed - and history has shown that the MSU has been permitted to go outside of those rules, such as setting up huge signs that exceed the maximum permitted size for banners (5' x 3'), as well as posting those signs directly in fire lanes.
Here's a link to "UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA POLICIES APPLYING TO CAMPUS ACTIVITIES, ORGANIZATIONS, AND STUDENTS / UCI Implementation / August 1996 / Revised with 2002 Updates for Sections 100.00 - 106.00, 110.00 - 114.00, 130.00 - 134.00, and Appendicies A - M" - specifically the section on posting non-commercial materials: http://www.dos.uci.edu/judicial/uci_policy.php#42.20
Also, there is also this PDF pamphlet distributed by the UCI Dean of Students Office:
http://www.dos.uci.edu/publications/pdf/1pub06policyonposting.pdf
I haven't seen the flyers yet, but:
http://www.dos.uci.edu/judicial/uci_policy.php#42.20
Section 42.20(Policy on Posting and Distribution of Literature)
Paragraph E (Literature Posting and Distribution Regulations)
Clause 1: "All literature and printed materials, both those written in English and those written in another language, must clearly show the name of the sponsoring person or registered organization in English."
Clause 2: "All literature and printed materials which refer to a specific event or date must be removed by the sponsoring individual or organization within 48 hours after the event or program."
Clause 3: "All literature and printed materials which do not refer to a specific event or date must bear a removal date not to extend beyond the last day of the academic quarter."
If the flyers didn't have the "name of the sponsoring person or registered organization", then yes, they are in violation of clause 1.
However, if they did have the "name of the sponsoring person or registered organization", as long as those flyers listed the specific date(s) of the event(s), unless some other policy was violated, those flyers would be permissible - there would be no need for a "removal date" under clause 2.
Thank you to Brett for adding that bit of info regarding Dean Peterson. Isn't that wonderful? This university bends over backwards to accommodate Muslim students and their speakers who preach hate against America, Israel and Jews in general, but will order posters supporting our troops to be taken down.
Disgusting!
