Independent Task Force: Anti-Semitism at UC Irvine Well-Documented

Posted by: Jonathan Constantine | 02/12/2008 2:20 PM

Contrary to what CAIR and the Department of Education reports, anti-semitism, anti-Americanism, and pro-terror speech is well-documented at UC Irvine. Below is a summary of the findings from the OC Task Force investigating antisemitism at UCI.

It's also important to distinguish this report as opposed the Department of Education's Report (who falsely came to the conclusion that the evidence below is not enough to conclude that national origin discrimination has occurred).

The OCR investigation did not render any conclusions about whether the allegations made by various individuals were true or not. Rather, the OCR investigation applied narrow legally technical analysis about whether UCI violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and its implementing regulations.

Below is a summary of the Task Force's findings:
The Task force has found:

1. Hate speech is unrelenting and well-documented.

2. The University has rightfully argued that it cannot and will not stifle free speech. This includes allowing students to record MSU events.

3. The anti-Israel bias of the faculty give the MSU fertile ground for anti-Israel and anti-semitic rhetoric.

4. Faculty members have used their classrooms to promote an anti-Israel agenda.

5. The MSU is an unchecked and agenda driven organization which allies itself with terror groups and enemies of the United States.

6. The University has failed to educate Muslim students about citizenship and American values.

7. The Chancellor has failed to exercise his moral authority as an educator and leader.

8. There is no indication that the University is at all concerned about the disconnect of campus and greater society's values.

9. The majority of Jewish organizations have not held the University accountable.

Evidence:

1. A non-Jewish Student described the atmosphere at UCI as dominated by a philosophy that looks at the United States and Israel as enemies, while supporting terror organizations. The same student had a professor who had a picture of Mahmoud Ahmadenijad on her computer. She also recounts an argument with an Iranian student who said "fuck Israel" and pulled down his trousers to showed his swastika tattoo.

2. The report recounts my experiences with the Muslim Student Union when I was harassed by the Muslim Student Union for videotaping an anti-semitic lecture by Amir Abdel Malik-Ali. Among other things the video shows, Ali accusing Jews of being behind 9/11. I was told by Acting Judiciary Dean Edgar Dormitorio to leave as the MSU had the right to prohibit coverage.

3. In Spring 2002, a recent graduate recounts his experiences with the Muslim Student Union following him. He also recounts that in the Spring of 2002, the Muslim Student Union had a Star of David on ring road painted with red symbolizing blood. The administration said they couldn't do much about it. The student also asked the administration to cover up UC Irvine's logo while hate-speakers were at the podium, and they said it was too much work.

4. A female student from Anteaters for Israel (AFI), a Jewish student group, was followed by male members of the MSU leadership.

5. Another female student said the administration ignored her complaints especially when Jewish student presentations were vandalized.

6. When an anti-hate rally took place after a cardboard wall put up on campus by the MSU was vandalized, Vice Chancellor Manuel Gomez refused to invite Jewish organizations.

7. A female student who was questioning MSU speaker Ward Churchill, had a camera shoved in her face by a student from the MSU, obstructing the vision in her left eye for 15-20 minutes. The UCI police department could do nothing about it.

8. Dean Sally Peterson in an email called a Jewish student hysterical for filing a complaint against the MSU for wearing Hamas sashes as graduation stoles.

9. There are incidents of Muslim students taking pictures of student's faces to scare them off.

10. The MSU has falsely quoted Jewish leaders in their literature. A violation of UCI code and an example of academic dishonesty.

11. The following has been attributed to frequent MSU speaker Amir Abdel Malik-Ali:

"Palestinian mothers are supporting their children who are suicide
bombers, saying, 'Go honey, go!' That ain't suicide; that's martyrdom."

Malik-Ali stood at a podium that bore the inscription "Desperation of the Zionist Lobby," and told his audience of some 150 mostly Muslim listeners: "Zionism is a mixture, a fusion of the concept of white supremacy and the Chosen People."

Malik-Ali was the featured speaker at an October 5, 2006 MSU event where he told a crowd of roughly 200 cheering students: "They [Jews] think they are superman, but we, the Muslims, are kryptonite. They [Jews] know that their days are numbered."

According to UCI's student newspaper, he "implied that Zionism is a mixture of 'chosen people-ness and white supremacy'; that the Iraqi war is in the process of 'Israelization';The Zionists had the 'Congress, the media and the FBI in their back pocket'; that the downfall of former Democratic Presidential front-runner Howard Dean was due to the Zionists;

The Mossad [Israel's intelligence agency] would have assassinated Al Gore if he was elected [in 2000] just to bring his Jewish Vice President, Joe Lieberman to power."

The Zionist Jews control of the American media. There is Zionist complicity in the war in Iraq, and Zionists' ability to deflect justified criticism. ..."You will have to hear more about the Holocaust when you accuse them of their Nazi behavior."

He asserted that a martyr's death is the most honorable form of death. "Victory or martyrdom," he asserted, are the only two viable options available to the Palestinians in their battle against Israel. Refusing to recognize Israel's existence, Malik-Ali referred to that country not by its name, but only as the "Zionist Apartheid State."

The following are the Task Force's recommendations:

1. The Chancellor should identify and condemn hate speech.

2. Students of Jewish identity should consider enrolling elsewhere if changes aren't made.

3. Community (religious and secular) should hold the University accountable.

4. The University has an obligation to inform the community of steps taken to ensure the integrity of it's academic program.

5. The Board of Regents should look into the qualifications of the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs in his capacity to be an impartial arbiter.

6. The University should refrain from selective enforcement of its rules and regulations.

7. Jewish students and organizations should hold the University accountable.

8. All student organizations should have a faculty adviser.

9. UCI resident assistants should be fully versed on procedures for filing complaints.

10. All incoming students should be required to take a course on appropriate civil discourse.

11. Community leaders should meet periodically with the administration and improve the status of the University.

12. During UCI Orientation week, new Jewish students who attend UCI should be invited by Jewish Organizations to attend a special orientation, where they can be briefed about the support structures in their community as well as the procedures to follow when confronted with antisemitism.
