Public Health Scare: A Socialist's Dream Come True
By Hon. Marie Waldron | 04/29/09 | 05:18 PM EDT | 11 Comments
Liberals love a good crisis. This week, panic is spreading over a potential swine flu pandemic and the liberal media is on a feeding frenzy. They have learned that all the dumbing down of the past decades really pays off when a crisis comes a knockin'. American citizens willing to hand over their God-given rights to government control in exchange for a false security can only be the result of ignorance and fear embedded through years of liberal indoctrination.
Take today's swine flu pandemic scare which could easily morph into tomorrow's government control of more of our freedoms - including nationalized healthcare, forced vaccination, loss of more parental authority, controls on intercontinental and domestic travel, etc. The democrats already used the scare to force the confirmation of Gov. Kathleen Sebelius (D-Kansas) into the position of Secretary of Health and Human Services, because at a time like this, the position must be filled! What a disaster.
Surely there is cause for concern, but my plea is to not lose all common sense in some sort of wild panic over it. A third world nation like Mexico is sure to face many sanitary and health issues different than the U.S. How many people regularly die in Mexico from the flu or pneumonia each year? No one asks that question. The 150 deaths could be normal for that nation with any given outbreak.
No one has died in our country. Most infectious disease experts indicate it is manifesting very similarly to the usual flu symptoms. It is a good idea to be aware and take precautions, but relying on the corrupt and inept government is not an option. Clearly, if the issue was so serious, the borders to our nation would already be closed and regulated. Politics and money will trump our national security and health every time.
Anyone who trusts the government in a crisis is a fool. As Benjamin Franklin stated in his notes at the Pennsylvania Assembly, "They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."

Yeah Marie. I am very concerned with how rapidly the CDC et. al are moving on this - while the swine flu of 1976 caused alot of worry, the treatments (including Tamiflu) proved to be harmful to some 1,000+ people who were unnecessarily harmed or killed from the treatment and not the disease.

|God Marie, I wish you were smarter. Next time will you neo-cons elect someone intelligent please?

|I think you are thinking of Our Lord God, Marie is not a God, she seems very intellegent and I'm sure she is God fearing, but she is not a God, so just address her as Honorable, or Marie. I'm sure she loved the compliment but it's so not necessary.

|I don't know who you are Anonymous, but obviously you don't know Councilmember Waldren. She is a solid conservative who knows what she is talking about. I just wonder why this article is upsetting to you? The truth hurt, eh?
I think we all need to be very careful of the events playing out with this flu. While it is devastating, we cannot let the democrats attempt to force us into even more servitude.

|"She is a solid Conservative who knows what she is talking about..." Really?
Did you read her quote above where she says "American citizens willing to hand over their God-given rights to government control in exchange for a false security can only be the result of ignorance and fear..."
Sounds like a Liberals' response to the Patriot Act, the War on Terror and the loss of Habeus Corpus.

|No liberal sounds anywhere near this forthright and clear headed. The Councilwoman clearly knows her libertarian, live-and-let-live, pro-freedom anti-state philosophy. I'm thrilled to read such a reasoned response, and invite anyone to poke holes in her argument using facts and examples rather than name calling and ad hominem attacks.

|I think you missed my point. I agree with the Councilwoman on this issue, but substitute "terrorist attack" for "swine flu pandemic" and "conservative" for "liberal" in her opening paragraph and you will undertand what I was trying to say. Government, on both sides of the aisle, uses fear to keep the populace under their control.

|Too many people are willing to submit to government control when they panic. The governmental elites are aware of that and use that to their advantage. I feel that the "God-given rights" the author is talking about have to do with our freedoms of assembly, our ability to travel freelly, our personal choice for healthcare and who pays for it. If I don't want big brother looking down my back to check my medical records or force some untested or unproven vaccine on my child that is my perogative.

|To Payforit: Your point is misguided because the good councilperson is speaking against government control no matter who is in the presidential seat. Bush was no conservative. So the point that liberals love a good crisis, whether it be a terrorist attack, a pandemic, a economic crisis etc. still holds true. Bush panicked and forced the 1st bailout. That is a liberally motivated solution to a manufactured crisis (yes - by the FED) that ultimately will enslave our kids and grandkids and our rights too.

|Way to go Marie! Finally someone is standing up and telling all the sheep the truth about big Government! Any crisis they can use too take away our freedom they will use in an instant! Everyone of us needs too take a stand, and, stop being led too the slaughter!

|Each time we restrict anothers freedoms, we lose a little in the act. Do give the government even one more area of our lives to control. Those who know better how to protect us and always looking for a way to save us from ourselves. This is just another case of big brother watching out for me.
