Shift in Irvine Power Couple: Ackermans
By Adam D. Probolsky | 05/22/09
My Irvine World News column this week discusses how Linda Ackerman is becoming a bigger force in politics and policy as Senator Dick Ackerman transitions to working for the Nossaman law firm. I met up with Linda this week in the DC area. Linda is California's Republican National Committeewoman. She has been an a critical supporter of her husband throughout his political career, its pretty cool to see Linda step into the... read more »

No Reason to Contribute to Hutchens: Personality and Policy
By Adam D. Probolsky | 05/04/09
A lot of political giving is based on the personality behind the ask. For Appointed Sheriff Hutchens this is a big problem. She lacks the ability to make a lasting impression with people, she is not terribly interesting or unique. She has all the bad attributes of a longtime law enforcement officer/bureaucrat like an overdose of skepticism and a certain coldness and none of the good attributes like curiosity about people she... read more »

Mr. Holcomb has got it wrong
By Adam D. Probolsky | 05/01/09
I am not sure I like the idea of tit-for-tat posts but feel it necessary to clarify the message in my Irvine World News column from this week and then give Mr. Holcomb (whom I am sure I have never met) a lesson in how government regulation can hinder economic growth. In Irvine, the Quail Hill Village Center is located off the Sand Canyon/Shady Canyon exit of the 405 Freeway. It is tucked away in the hillside with virtually no freeway... read more »

No Reason to Contribute to Hutchens
By Adam D. Probolsky | 04/30/09
People give to politics for numerous different reasons: they like the individual, they agree with their policies, they are hoping to get in on the ground floor of a long career in politics, they are compelled to give by a friend who has a connection to the candidate or issue. Appointed Sheriff Sandra Hutchens has only one of those things going for her, the one where a handful of people who bought into her appointment are twisting the arms of... read more »

STUPID: Tustin man
By Adam D. Probolsky | 04/06/09
Thank a local elected official today if you have the chance. This week's Tustin City Council Agenda features a great example of the crazy things local electeds have to deal with on a regular basis. The item below also, shows that some police encounters can go better than others. The first interaction demonstrates restraint and a realisitic approach to law enforcement. The second shows that even friendly cops have a... read more »

Conserve Yes, Hold up the sale of my home, NO WAY
By Adam D. Probolsky | 12/13/08
As part of their 2009 legislative priorities, the Metropolitan Water District's Board of Directors last Tuesday adopted a position of support for a state mandated retrofit at the point of sale on interior home fixtures, such as toilets, shower heads and faucets. According to the staff report, the aim of the legislation is that:"Public agencies shall require that no new or existing structures within their respective jurisdictions shall be sold or... read more »

Costa Mesa: Righeimer's hard-fought campaign should lead to 2010 victory
By Adam D. Probolsky | 11/24/08
The city of Costa Mesa has a Republican/conservative led city council. The lone elected Democrat Katrina Foley is a very nice, but is unabashed about being a liberal.Jim Righeimer came in fourth on Election Day earlier this month but solidified his position in Costa Mesa's governance structure. Righeimer is a planning commissioner and involves himself in a meaningful way in all things public policy surrounding development and... read more »

Fullerton Stays In Republican Hands, Local GOP To Rescue
By Adam D. Probolsky | 11/05/08
The city of Fullerton is always on the verge of going Democrat, or at least having a anti-business Democrat majority on the city council. This election was no different. Karen Haluza was making a strong play for a council while Republicans Shawn Nelson and Dick Jones were fighting to keep their seats.Haluza ran into the Republican Party along the way. Wanting to preserve a Republican council that would at least listen to the business... read more »

In search of problems that don't exist.
By Adam D. Probolsky | 11/03/08
The media is in search of problems with our voting system. They desperately want to find some minor irregularity to exploit, some line thats more than 10 people deep, some guy who thinks the poll worker looked at him funny. The Orange County Register is even dedicating several of their reporters to the project. The media should watch over the election process. But especially here in Orange County, we have a Registrar of Voters who has... read more »
