Port in a Storm: Afghanistan Surge?

September 22, 2009 | 12:27 PM

Dr. Richard Swier

Should the United States conduct a "surge of troops" into Afghanistan? That is the question Rich discusses in today's Port-in-a-Storm podcast. Rich points out the similarities between President Bush's surge in Iraq and the decision President Obama must make soon on whether or not to provide significantly more troops to the fight in Afghanistan. President Obama ironically faces the same challenges as his predecessor - an American public that is against a surge, a Democratic Congress and Party that are opposed to continuing the war and a corrupt government with a growing insurgency. What will President Obama do? Will he stand by his position that Afghanistan is "a war worth fighting" or will he cave to public opinion and political pressure? Will be see a surge in Afghanistan?

September 15, 2009 | 08:24 PM

Dr. Richard Swier

Rich discusses the deadly Rules of Engagement implemented by President Obama's hand picked Commander in Afghanistan, General Stanley A. McChrystal. Upon taking command General McChrystal issued a standing order that U.S. and NATO military forces would not harm civilians. Rich discusses the practical application of this standing order on our military to successfully fight and win in Afghanistan. Rich discusses a recent incident where Afghan Army units supported by U.S. Marines came under fire from Taliban and Al Qaeda fighters in Eastern Afghanistan. During the fire fight the Marines requested supporting fires to suppress the enemy, they were denied that supporting fire resulting in the death of four Marines and nine Afghan Army and police. Rich says that this is a losing strategy and policy on many levels. Read Rich's companion article to this podcast, "President's Afghan Policy killing Marines".

Rep. Joe Wilson embarrassed the Republicans during the president's speech. Honesty is the new black, but his outburst was like wearing white shoes after Labor Day: It shouldn't have been done.
