The City of Lincoln today notified over 200 employees that major city layoffs are coming as early as this Friday. City police office and fire fighters, normally spared such cuts, have been told that they will be part of the cuts.
The city faces a budget deficit of at least $1.5 million. Decisions on the exact number of layoffs will come after a meeting between the City Manager and the Council this Thursday.

UPDATE (9:00 PM) - The Bee had updated this story. The City of Lincoln only has 230 employees. They are not going to be laying off 200 people. They notified every city employee, probably as mandated by law or collective bargaining agreements, to give the city maximum flexibility in who they ultimately have to let go.
