Ose Camp Out of the Gate Strong, Claims Polls Show Him Strongest Candidate, But My Money is Still on Rico

The Ose camp is out of the gate with a strong announcement, a ton of endorsements, and a campaign email claiming polls show him leading Oller in the primary and stronger against Charlie Brown in the general.
Here's that email, courtesy of Marko Mlikotin:
So does this mean that Ose is the favorite after all. I don't think so. There's no doubt that Ose is in to win, and will run a strong campaign. He'll have money and endorsements. Maybe even more of each. But this is a very conservative district. In many ways, the south Placer portion is the least conservative. I would not be surprised if Ose runs competitively with Oller in the Roseville and Rocklin areas. But once you get our of the suburbs, I believe Rico is going to run up the score, big time.
I said before that I like Doug Ose. I don't call him a liberal, and I think he would be a fine Congressman. I have worked with him and his staff before and would do so again.
But I don't think that is going to happen Districts like the 4th Congressional district should and almost always do elect the strongest conservative. I will admit I am impressed by how well the Ose campaign orchestrated the announcement, but I just don't see him getting there. Rico's biggest threat would be Eric Egland taking just enough votes to let Doug squeak by. But Egland to me seems to be fading. The life is gone from his campaign. Like Charlie Brown, he needed to be the anti-Doolittle, and that factor is out of the race dynamics now.
If you live in the 4th, like I do. Be prepared. You will be getting a lot of mail and phone calls, and your Wave Broadband Cable is going to be shoving ads down your throat. It's going to be a bumpy ride, and that's just fine with me. Vigorous debate is what makes democracy great.

Many of you have asked me to share the news of Doug's decision to run for Congress. He is off and running, and if today's press conference in Placer County (40 percent of the district) is any indication, he is off to an extraordinary start:
- In attendance, Rep. Dan Lungren announced that he and Congressman Wally Herger support Ose!
- In attendance were over 30 elected officials supporting Ose!
- Ose was endorsed by all five Placer County Supervisors, public safety officials - and a host of city council members and community leaders from throughout the district
- Recent polling confirms that Doug Ose is the strongest candidate for Republican victory. In the GOP primary, he starts with an 11-point advantage over challenger Rico Oller. In the general election, Ose begins the campaign in a dead-heat with likely Democratic nominee Charlie Brown, while Oller trails Brown by 10 points.
This is what those in attendance had to say:
- "Doug Ose's personal integrity, experience and proven dedication to taxpayers and fiscal accountability will help set a bold new course for our nation." - Congressman Dan Lungren
- "In the face of a troubled economy, we could not ask for a better champion than
Doug Ose."
- State Senator Dave Cox
- "Conservative, experienced, ethical -- that's what I think of when I think about Doug Ose."
- Placer County Supervisor Rocky Rockholm
- "We know we can count on Doug Ose to fight for our local interests."
- Rocklin City Councilmember Kathy Lund
- "When it comes to public safety there is no better candidate in the race for Congress than Doug Ose."
- Placer County Sheriff Ed Bonner
- "In Congress, Doug Ose voted for one of the largest tax cuts in American history, and spearheaded the Government Waste and Corrections Act to stop wasteful spending that was costing taxpayers $30 billion annually. I strongly endorse him."
- Lew Uhler, President National Tax Limitation Committee
So does this mean that Ose is the favorite after all. I don't think so. There's no doubt that Ose is in to win, and will run a strong campaign. He'll have money and endorsements. 4th Congressional District Race, FEATURE

Why would so many prominent republicans come out in strong support of Ose if they didn't think he could carry all parts of the district. I think you're way off here - Ose is going to be very tough to beat with all that support. Oller is in for a tough battle to even make it a race.
Here is what worries me about Rico's candidacy. He is currently running 11 points behind liberal Charlie Brown. John Doolittle was tied with Brown a couple of months ago. If we didn't think Doolittle could win when he was tied with Brown, why do we now think Rico can when he is 11 points behind? Brown is going to be tougher than people think and we need a candidate that has the resources, support and appeal to beat him. Sorry friends, but that aint Rico.
Bill -
You are quoting internal polls from Ose, show me a public poll. The last internal polls (from the NRCC!) I saw showed Rico with 80% name ID, Ose 25%.
Ose is wrong on so many issues that there is no way the other 67% of the district that isn't Placer will accept him.
Jackie and Bill - endorsement lists do not make a candidate. I have talked to several on Ose's list and their reasons are not idealogical for their decision.
If the race becomes about issues, Ose will not win.
Endorsements may not win campaigns but Rico's lack of any substantial endorsements is very troubling. And I will take Ose's character any day over Oller.
Rico's endorsement list...
I'm a conservative, and I've endorsed Rico Oller. (And I have still 25,000 watts of radio current each day in this district.)
Assemblyman Rick Keene and State Senator Sam Aanestead have endorsed him as well...Ted Gaines is not standing alone for Rico; as other conservatives understand what is at play here.
Rico's endorsement list is just fine...and growing, stay tuned for more.
NOTE: The County Supervisors are simply hoping that Ose can help them gain their $99,000 salary.
Remember, State Senator Rico Oller did NOT take his pay raise while serving in the State Senate. If you're a Super, and you're looking to hit the taxpayers up for an extra $69,000 a year in salary, would you endorse Rico, a man who turned his own pay raise down?
This is nothing but self interest. You can't tell me that Rocky and Bruce are in lock-step with Ose's ideology. We all know better than that.
The conservative Supervisors are playing with a gamble that Ose wins; the Supers can use him to muscle in their new $99,000 salary. Nothing wrong, or unethical here - just needs to be stated.
Now - if you're a taxpayer who is facing the invoice of a new payroll increase for County Supervisors, and you're bothered by this INCREASE in SPENDING...YOU NEED to VOTE for Rico Oller.
All politics is local; as in one's own pocket and self interest.
Eric...
You did hit the nail on the head concerning the pay raise. Darn it... that was one of my points in my next Gold Country Media column. Rico not only did not take the pay raise, but he also was the only legislator who spoke against it to the Citizen's Compensation Committee. After the legislators received the pay raise many would not take it, but Rico was the only one who spoke against it to the Committee. For his whole 8 years in office he did not take the pay raise. For $69,000 a year, our Supervisors sold out.
And that is not the end of the story. Of course the Supervisors engineered the whole Placer County Charter Review Committee and their report recommending a $69,000 pay increase. The Supervisors have delayed their final vote for going forward with this until March 7. Guess what, March 7 is the final filing day to file and run against them. What they are expecting is that no one will file to run against them and they will automatically serve as Supervisor for the next 4 years. So they vote on March 7 to move forward with their $69,000 per year pay increase, and even if the voters are mad, they are scott free for 4 more years.
And add to that that the County is cutting back in every area, but the Supervisors are pushing for their $69,000 raise.
I can add many other things like this, but I think everyone gets the point. This is slimy, underhanded and self-serving.
Ken and Eric -
Are you really as uneducated as you appear or do you just have integrity issues, like your man Rico? The pay raise for the Supervisors would have to be voted on by the people, in the November general election. Even if all three supervisors who are up this year (only three) won re-election against an opponent or not, the pay increase concept would have to be voted on by the people. There is no “scott free”. By the way, I went to the Board’s website and looked at their calendar, they don’t even have a meeting on March 7th. Are you even trying to get your facts straight?
Saying there is any connection between supporting Ose and their pay raise is just plain ignorant. What about the fact that a majority of the Roseville, Rocklin, Lincoln and Auburn city councils endorse Ose? What about the fact that both the Placer County and El Dorado County District Attorney's support Ose? I'm pretty sure that's not for the Placer County BOS pay raise. It's because they know Ose is a strong conservative who has a high level of integrity and will serve the people well, just as the Supervisors who support him do.
Oh, and Eric, trying to claim that Rocky and Bruce don't have the same ideologies... my guess is you don't truly know Ose's. Rocky and Bruce are huge supporters of conservative principles like strong law enforcement, strong fiscal budgeting and so many more, just like Ose. They are dedicated conservative public officials with integrity, just like Ose. Rocky and Bruce are supporting Doug because he's a strong, proven, and ethical CONSERVATIVE leader. Have you read Ose’s voting record? I have, it looks pretty darn conservative to me, and is rated so independent vote watch groups.
I recommend to both of you to either properly educate yourself before posting your comments, or just actually say the truth.
Oh, and Ken, you mentioned in a previous post on another topic you’d fund to the maximum amount allowed via campaign limits toward any opponent to a Supervisor (that’s not what you called them, you used a child like reference that I won’t because I graduated the 4th grade), just so you know, there are no individual limits for Supervisor contributions. So to max out, you’d have to sign over all your assets. Seriously, again, are you even trying to know what you are talking about?
Thanks for setting those guys straight. Ken and Eric need to know, people like them, the ones who truly have agendas, will not be listened to and the support will go with our local leaders. Support will not go to the people from the area who just like to hear their own voice or read their own words. And Ose Voter is right, do some research before you say things. I have, and I suggest anyone who is a voter in this district look up both records and make a decision. Don’t listen to angry ignorant people who don’t have real jobs but instead spend their time here.
To the last two postings...
First, why so angry? I thought the Ose voters were concerned about character and behavior? Let's keep this dialogue clear of name calling - Ken and I are not ignorant, and neither are you.
Yes, Doug Ose can "help" with the increase in pay for the Supervisors. A GOP Congressman can 'muscle down' and move things along. If it doesn't pass this time, it will be on the ballot in the future, hence Ose's help with the vote. Rico would not consider this pay raise for a moment.
As for Bruce and Rocky, they are NOT Pro-Choice, nor would they support Same Sex Marriage legislation, more gun laws. Remember, I never said Ose was a bad guy or a bad Republican - stop trying to put venom where there isn't any. Doug is a moderate, and this is a saunch conservative district. If you put Bruce and Rocky on the filter, they are more suited for a conservative than a moderate.
As for the agenda issues - YES, I do have an agenda. I want Rico Oller to win. No secret here. And you have an agenda, you two want Doug Ose to win...so stop it with the sophomoric "agenda" rhetoric...we are trying to persuade people to vote one way over another. No secret here.
To the homework question...(life, marriage, guns, some tax issues and campaign money for moderates over conservatives) I've done 8-years of research, working with both men in numerous situations. Again, they are both good Republicans, yet Rico Oller is the better fit for CD4.
Now, let's stay on topic and keep the name calling and the emotions in check, thanks.
A Couple of notes for the readers -
the commenter calling themself 4th CD Ose Voter - has used a variety of psuedonyms and chooses to comment anonymously, so he can take shots at people with no accountability.
The most recent names are chris crowder and the captain. Please take a note when you read comments from this person -
If necessary I will reveal his identity. I could care less about anon commenters who are professional and polite, but those that use personal attacks will be exposed.
Frankly, Doug Ose deserves better from his supporters... unless anon cowards are the best he can muster.
Rico Supporter is making a lot of personal attacks with no back-up elsewhere on this site. At least 4th CD Ose Voter makes some points.
Readers:
While I appreciate Jeff's column above, he is simply wrong. Endorsements do count. Money in the bank counts.
According to Ose's list of endorsements, most of the prominent local electeds in Placer and El Dorado, which represent about 70% of the electorate, have endorsed Ose. On top of that, Ose has received the Herger and Lungren endorsements and the Doolittle machine has lined up behind him.
On the money side, I checked - and Ose has nearly $500K in the bank. Egland has $80K in the bank. And Oller has $89 dollars in the bank. That's a huge difference.
I agree w/ one of the comments above about the polling info - it's a private poll. So don't believe it. But money and endorsements are compelling. Ose's got both by a huge margin. Oller doesn't have either.
While Jeff is clearly wrong that Oller will "run up the score", he is right that voters in the 4th will get a non-stop drubbing of political mail, phone, cable tv ads, etc. Let's hope both campaigns keep it clean and stick to facts.
John
I want everyone to believe that RICO OLLER has $89 in his campaign chest. Eventhough I personally know that he has more, much, much more...lol
