La Habra Council Candidate Tim Shaw Loses OC GOP Nod Over Sales Tax Hike
Posted by: Jubal | 09/16/2008 2:00 PM
The OC GOP voted on more local candidate endorsements last night. Among those not getting the nod was La Habra city council candidate Tim Shaw.Shaw is the district director for Assemblyman Bob Huff, and formerly was a policy advisor to Sup. Janet Nguyen. He lost a previous race for La Habra council in 2002.
According to those present, the primary factor costing Shaw the endorsement was his support for a half-cent city sales tax hike on the November ballot. Here's a video of Shaw addressing the council on the subject of placing the hike on ballot:
The motion to endorse Shaw was made by Jessi Patrella (Mark Bucher's alternate). Shaw himself wasn't there. FlashReport.org publisher Jon Fleischman spoke against the motion to endorse. The rest is history.
UPDATE (9/17/08): the La Habra Post, a blog covering La Habra politics, posted a video of Tim Shaw during his interview for possible appointment to the vacancy created by Councilman Steve Anderson's death:
Taped during the appointment interviews by the La Habra City Council, Tim Shaw is asked by Councilman Jim Gomez to explain why he (Tim) may have a problem because he is seen as too Republican.I don't believe supporting a tax increase entails automatic excommunication from conservatism, but it's a rare instance nowadays when a conservative case can be made for supporting a tax. I think the Measure M renewal was an exception, but it is a dedicated tax with a track record of results -- not simply shoveling more money into a general fund.

2008 Elections, La Habra

Great call by the OC GOP. Seems that Janet Nguyen breeds RINO's. Shaw is evidence of that.
His ex boss Janet wants to waste $2.5 million for the " Uncle Jao's bridge".
Congratulations OC GOP on gift wrapping another republican seat for a democrat. Did you stop and think about the fact that the only other viable candidate is a democrat? I think Tim should consider not getting your endorsement an accolade since your party is in shambles and only seems to get it right just as broken clock does - twice a day by chance.
SHAME ON GOP,
What are you talking about? Shaw had no shot from the start.
Stop kidding yourself John, Tim not only has the blessing of the late Steve Anderson's wife, but also Gomez, Beamish, and every other republican legislator in La Habra's district- at least the one's that matter that is...
Maybe those Republican legislators representing La Habra should consider pulling their endorsements of Tim Shaw who is a pro-tax Republican candidate.
Didn't Tim Shaw used to work for Arnold? I guess they both share the same philosophy when it comes to taxes huh?
Stop kidding yourself Tim, the moment you decided it was okay to let go of your Republican values and just "play along to get along", was the moment you lost any chance of winning this race.
First time I've seen this YouTube though. Talk about a career ending video.
My question is this: isn't this guy endorsed by the CRA, OCYR, and the Family Action PAC, along with numerous other "conservative" legislators? Will they withdraw their endorsements? This video makes a good case for that, as well as Senator-elect Bob Huff thinking twice about hiring a fiscal liberal as a District Director...
The OC GOP did the right thing. Tim Shaw is a nice guy but his policy is not in tune with the Republican party. The Democrat Rose Espinosa doesn't need another political ally on the La Habra City Council to raise taxes.
Shame on OCGOP,
I'm kidding myself? Come on. Your argument includes Beamish and Gomez, both of them support the sales tax increase. Fiscal responsible Republican values? Ideas you support when you can get key endorsements right? WRONG!
But why pick on Shaw? If GOP Central were consistent they'd stop endorsing RINO's like Don Bankhead and Dick Jones in Fullerton whose mission seems to be to go along with staff on every proposal, subsidy, and expansion of government (check out the new Redevelopment Project Area expansion) then there's their concealment of retroactive pension payments from the citizenry, etc., etc., ad nauseam.
What gives?
In fact, just last night supposed conservatives Jones and Bankhead voted to subsidize "nightclubs" in downtown Fullerton. The only one to vote against it was the Democrat - Pam Keller.
Does Shaw seem so out of the North OC GOP mainstream?
Question: Tim Shaw is also supported by Steve Anderson's brother in law, Raul Luna, Loretta Sanchez's district director. Does that mean Sanchez is supporting Shaw as well?
Shaw simply needs to learn a lesson -- real conservatives should NOT vote for him this time. He's young and has potential, so let him run again in a few years on a real conservative platform. Frankly, I'd rather vote for a tough and moderate deputy sheriff over a tax-raising college professor (all that Shaw really is).
La Habra Conservative,
I agree. Now, who else is running in La Habra?
John,
After doing some reading and some research. Seems that the other Republican leaning candidates are Mayor Pro-Tem Tom Beamish, Robert Ortega, and Michael Shapiro. There was information on Beamish and Ortega, but hardly anything on Shapiro.
Beamish we know about. Ortega seems like a young promising guy.
Anyone interested in finding out more, check out their websites:

Beamish is an incumbent who, together with his 3 colleagues, actually put the tax on the ballot. Nevertheless, the OC GOP has endorsed Beamish and they are taking out knives against Shaw. Strange...
Rob Ortega has little to no involvement in the city and he failed to turn in a candidate statement. He doesn't have a chance.
The "tough and moderate deputy sheriff" that was mentioned is a partisan Democrat who is very vocal in his support of the sales tax, Obama for president, MacMurray for Assembly (Mike Duvall's
Democratic opponent), etc. Art Pedroza writes about him here: http://orangejuiceblog.com/2008/08/dpoc-endorses-la-habra-council-candidate-daren-nigsarian/. Interesting to see that Art says the other viable candidate is Shaw, a "hard-right GOP lobbyist."
Here's a video from our "moderate" Democratic candidate for city council, who appears with the Democratic candidate for Assembly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLi9fl6uHEE&feature=related
I guess that's fairly typical: the Democrats unite behind their candidate, Republicans shoot themselves in the foot. Everyone needs to realize that however the city council race shakes out will have no impact on whether or not the sales tax measure passes - it's all happening November 4th. There are other issues where political philosophy will come into play later: eminent domain, rent control, a "Living Wage" ordinance, "Open-space" set asides, further tax increases, etc. Do we want a member of the California Republican Assembly, a member of the OC GOP central committee, a past board member of the O.C. Young Republicans, a former employee of the Republican Party, etc. making those decisions (Shaw), or an Obama-supporting partisan Democrat?
Well,
Interesting points Banana, but what says this guy can win now? He's lost two races in the past.
If La Habra is a Democratic leaning as it seems to be, how is this guy gonna pull it off?
La Habra isn't Democratic leaning - Bush beat Kerry by 16% in La Habra. The registration breaks down 11,300 Republicans, 10,000 Democrats.
Shaw only ran for council once before, in 2002. This time he's enjoying the support of 2 councilmembers, several previous councilmembers, most of the commissioners in the city, and all the legislative representatives for La Habra.
By the way, the Lincoln Club just endorsed Shaw: http://www.lincolnclub.org/mc/page.do?sitePageId=55949
Banana,
Good points. Well, either way it is what it is. Best of luck to all those candidates. We'll see how it all plays out in November, never a lock.
The rumor flying around today is that a group of folks are getting together to send a letter to everyone who has endorsed Tim Shaw requesting that they pull their endorsement for him.
For the next month and a half he's going to have his hands full just keeping hold of the endorsements he already has...
How about a dose of reality here?
Tim Shaw has done more then support the Sales Tax, he endorsed the Utility Tax (Measure G) and the Hotel Tax the latter were both defeated. In fact, Shaw was the Treasurer of the Yes On G Committee along with that screaming liberal, tax em till they bleed to death democrat, Darin Nigasarian.
You can see Shaw speak about the Republican Party and his independent ability to do what he wants regardless of his party's philosophy - www.lahabrapost.com
La Habra has a history of fielding Republicans that talk big with the Central Committee to get their endorsement, but turn into ragging socialists when they get elected.
Take Steve Simonian. He supported every tax increase in La Habra. He has done everything he can to get more taxes out of his citizens. Then when it comes to putting the sales tax on the ballot, he calls in from his home in Hawaii and says, "as a Republican I’m against taxes....But we need this".
At the next council meeting Simonian castigates Larry Dobkin (Democrat for council seat) for having the audacity to point out all the taxes Simonian has supported and endorsed over the years.
What makes this even more hilarious is that Dobkin was the president of the "No On G" committee and he has formed another group to stop the sales tax measure.
A Democrat against taxes (Dobkin), Shaw (R) and Nigasarian (D) for taxes - by the way, Mike Shapiro (R) is against taxes and the vote was split even to endorse by the Central and Endorsement Committees.
Holy crap, that video posted in the website is ten times worse than the one posted here.
WHAT WAS HE THINKING????
I feel bad for those folks in La Habra.
Irvine Mike
Beamish supports the Sales Tax.
