My Take On The Anaheim City Council Race
Posted by: Chris Emami | 08/11/2008 3:47 PM
Now that filing has closed for the Anaheim City Council seat it is time to make some predictions. I have a feeling that what I am about to say is not going to make a lot of Republicans happy. Harry Sidhu will win which is good for the party as he will retain the one Republican seat that is up for re-election. Unfortunately though I will also predict that Lorri Galloway will retain her seat on the City Council as well.
Harry Sidhu has incumbency on his side along with the ability to self fund his campaign should he decide at any point that the race is not going as well as he would like. I personally like Harry and what he has done in Anaheim. I wish that he had run for the 60th Assembly District instead of the 33rd Senate District this past June. Despite the results of the June election this will not in my opinion hurt him this November in terms of name ID.
Lorri Galloway also has incumbency on her side which is one of the biggest hurdles for all of the challengers to overcome. She has dominated the fundraising so far as it shows on her fundraising report (Form 460) that she has raised almost $200,000. I was hoping that a Republican could win back this seat especially after Republican Lucille Kring knocked Democrat Richard Chavez off of the City Council two years ago. I just don't feel that any of the opponents will be able to knock her off though.
The best of the rest so to speak includes John Karczinski and Gail Eastman who both are very qualified which will ultimately be their undoing. I believe that they will end up splitiing the anti-incumbent vote thus leading to a Sidhu/Galloway victory. This however will build up their name ID for a potential 2010 run for the Council when at least one open seat is available.
Regarding Steve Perez who is the hot topic of the comments portion of my last post on Anaheim. All I have seen are a Myspace page and a lot of highly charged rhetoric. At this point I would have to say that he is not a viable challenger, and do not think that he will make it into the top 4 come election night. Strategically he should have a website up that states his positions and should not have his age (20) visible anywhere as that can be used against him. I do wish him the best though as I know how tough the process is especially when incumbents are involved.

Did Lorri raise the money or loan it to herself?
The majority of it looks like it has been raised by various contributions, but she did loan a portion of it to her campaign. As of right now after all of her expenditures she has about $60,000 on hand.
I thought Lorri would be in debt by now.
Chris ordinarily I would agree with you that the incumbents will hold. But Lorri is going down. Too many people are unwilling to do another four years of her. It is not politics, it is outright hatred. No way is she keeping that seat, money or no money. Folks are mobilized against her. They may not be supporting one candidate or the other, but they are against Lorri, and that becomes ugly. It will be Harry and Gail or John.
Don't forget, Democrats aren't terribly anxious to help out Lori Galloway. Only two years ago the chose Lynn Daucher over Lou Correa in the state's toughest Senate race. Look for IE's against her. Roditis will likely benefit from Galloway's idiotic move. People were willing to play nice for the remainder of her term, but they don't trust her enough to work for her re-election.
I've heard plenty of talk of a No On Galloway campaign, independent of any candidate, it will be interesting to see if that plays out. She burned her bridges with the Resort issue, while stabbing fellow Dems in the back. Unfortunately for her, Frank Elfend is not registered to vote in Anaheim. In the meantime, I look forward to some smaller, more affordable events where voters can get to know the other candidates a bit better. Neighborhood coffees would be great! Anyone heard of any yet?
I am new to this but here me out...
Why do we all love Sidhu? He is hardly a republican when it comes down to his values, assuming he has any at all. He is a flip-flopper and is undeniably corrupt. You all seem like a bunch in the know... so please don't deny the obvious.
Galloway is a sure bet this cycle. She is well-organized, funded, and has a large group of very loyal supporters. Not to mention the fact that she is a hard worker. Lastly, she has made inroads with conservatives given she was one of few to stick up for property rights during the Disney debacle.
Poster Daniel sure doesn't know Sidhu. Get real man. Sidhu has solid Republican values and has done well by the taxpayers in Anaheim. That's why we all love Sidhu.
He also doesn't know Galloway. Who are her large group of very loyal supporters? And what inroads has she made with conservatives? Are we talking about the same Lorri Galloway?
Sidhu is a flip flopper.... he changed his mind on the Disney deal just to boost his chances at winning the senate seat which he lost by a landslide... he could not even carry Anaheim. Voters don't respond to weak values...
As for Lorri and her supporters, I ask you where does all her campaign money come from... her loyal supporters, of whom their are many. Some people, even here in the hills, like that she exhibits actual leadership versus Sidhu style pandering.
If you all recall Disney and its supporters were interfering with the free market... are we not conservatives here? Lorri stood up for what was right. That is while she will win.
Lorri did not side with the free market, she sided with a developer who has given more money to Council campaigns than Disney, and she voted AGAINST the will of the people on the Disney deal. And THAT is why she will lose.
Colony, you write beautiful convincing prose, however your facts are tragically erroneous. The fact you cite public opinion in Anaheim is hilarious, Lorrie is the only one on the counsel who actually listens to the people... all of them not just the narrow interests of the resort crowd.
You have something personal against Lorri. I know this because you argue like a liberal all emotions no facts based on logic.
Wow. First time in my life I have been called a liberal. I think I should be insulted, but I will rise above it. Daniel, where I come from, public opinion is represented by a majority vote, and “the Resort crowd” as you put it, had over 20,000 signatures of Anaheim voters on the Referendum and Initiative. “The Resort crowd” had the majority vote in that issue, and therefore “the Resort crowd” represented public opinion. How on earth does that equate to Lorri being the only one on the Council who actually listens to the people? Yes, you are correct, I do have something personal against Lorri Galloway. I detest anyone who takes my tax dollars to run the city I live, work, and volunteer in, while ignoring the will of the people who have forfeited those tax dollars. Anaheim should not be Lorri’s personal petri dish for her own social engineering experiments.
Now Daniel, which of my facts are tragically erroneous? All emotions and no facts? Who is all emotions and no facts?
Colony,
One property owner wanted to sell a piece of property to another private entity to do with it what they wish. Disney, in their effort control 100% the city of Anaheim attempted to block this deal and with it the free movement of property. Lorri stood up against Disney and asked them nicely to let these private individuals be. Disney responded by manipulating the facts and creating that lie of an initiative you speak of based on fear tactics. Lorri is a unique and needed voice on the council. I urge you to change your mind and see the light. The light of policies that support all business and not just one huge corporation and its allies.
Best!
Daniel: do you really believe that Lorri Galloway would have been there to 'stick up for property rights' if SunCal's proposed development hadn't contained a token amount of 'affordable housing'? Do you think she would have lifted a finger for the free market if, say, someone proposed building a car dealership or a Wal-Mart on the same property?
Galloway got played by SunCal because they found the right lever to move her. You may think it makes her a conservative hero, but I found her willingness to be manipulated embarrassing.
Who is manipulating who? The deal seemed to be a great compromise to benefit two of Anaheim's demographics... its the miracle of the capitalist system. If SunCal manipulated Lorri then it can be said that Lorri manipulated them... and thats ridiculous. SunCal is looking out for their interest. Lorri is looking out for Anaheim. Who is Dinsey looking out for?
Daniel: Even if I accepted your framing of events to believe that Galloway was the canny one in the SunCal debacle, you'd still end up with a story about a politician imposing her requirements on a developer in exchange for her political support -- that's hardly a display of free-market capitalism!
If "Lorri is looking out for Anaheim", how come she didn't do anything for affordable housing in the Platinum Triangle? How come she hasn't come forward with a plan to rehabilitate existing worker housing in downtown Anaheim? Think about what the city could do by redeveloping some of the existing sad-looking 50s and 60s apartment buildings where many of our low-income workers currently live!
Galloway saw a cheap chance to look good by grandstanding in favor of SunCal -- and in the end, she added no affordable housing, antagonized Orange County's largest employer, and came across looking whiny and petulant in Council meetings to many Anaheim voters (like me) who previously had no strong opinions about her. If this whole episode was a display of her leadership abilities and political acumen, count me out -- our city deserves better!
Daniel is at most clueless about Mr. Sidhu.
Mr.Sidhu has great respect from our conservative republican community.
"its the miracle of the capitalist system"
Oh, Daniel, Daniel, Daniel. The Suncal thing had almost nothing to do with capitalism and even less to do with miracles. It was all about a big developer foisting a mega-housing project on the rest of us by influencing (buying/cajoling/whispering sweet nothings?) three of five councilmembers.
A deal you might see go down on a Beach Boulevard corner has more to do with capitalism than the Suncal debacle - although there would certainly be evident similarities.
Biff,
You make a couple good points, however, I'm sure Lorri supports most of the things you mentioned. I just do not see your criticism, are you accusing her of being a politician finding a way to bring an important issue to light?
Boys boys boys, read your Smith one more time. When parties do their best to represent their own interest the global interest emerges as a result of the competition. Suncal was out for their project, Disney was trying protect its bottom line. Lorri was REPRESENTING THE CITY OF ANAHEIM
No Daniel you read your Smith.
The "global interest" that emerges under the so-called invisible hand of self-interest does so in a free market - not one where individuals in government hold police powers and zoning authority. Influence is bought and sold in government alright, but not in the way Adam Smith envisaged it.
In any case, whether or not Lorri actually represented the City of Anaheim or merely her own agenda will be assessed by the voters in November.
Maybe not the it was originally thought to work... but the way government works this day is an interesting extension of free-market principles...
"but the way government works this day is an interesting extension of free-market principles..."
You're close. Substitute the the word perversion for extension and I'm inclined to agree with you. Especially when so many Chambers of Commerce confuse being pro business with being pro city hall (see Fullerton for prime example).
Daniel, I appreciate you willingness to support Lorri, but you have been misled. Please do your research. Go back and find what happened years ago and why we mistrust her. Cynthia is not alone. There are many, yes, many of us that want her taken off as soon as possible. We even initiated talk years ago about recalling her. We decided at the time that it would be too costly to fight Pringle, Chavez and her. So, this is not new talk, but years of seeing her destroy our neighborhoods and how she worked to protect her future. Lorri has had numerous opportunities to represent all of Anaheim and she has chosen to walk to her own drum. Her original position on the council was to compliment Pringle along with Chavez. I hope that you can remember those days of a 3-2 vote, if not, go back and again do your research. Lorri was a pawn in the greater scheme of things. Has she created a voice for herself, yes? I will agree that she has lost the support of Pringle and since Chavez was eliminated, she’s had a choice. Her choice was to see Anaheim through her own colored glasses and not what was best for all of Anaheim. Her interest has been for the down and out, the homeless, the single mom, and for the future of her Eli Home. She has done quite well in these matters, but she again has forgotten that she was elected to represent everyone. Honest representation would be interested in building an Anaheim that would be good for all incomes and for all individuals, not just selected few. Build for the poor and they will come…build for the rich and they will come, but build a balanced city and everyone co-exists in harmony with opportunities for all. We are out of balance and our children will pay for it for years to come. Yes, I know that things have to change, but we need to change with a vision of balance in mind. We are so out of balance that many of our Anaheim long-time residents and leaders have left due to the blight, gangs, graffiti and neglect of our neighborhoods.
You talk about Disney and the one piece of land that caused Anaheim to come vocally alive. It is my recollection that this piece of land was already spoken for in the General plan as part of the Resort. The plan was to take 160 (approx) mobile homes and replace them with some low income but the reality of it was that this development was intended to increase density. I may be wrong, but I believe that Disney is not the Resort, but a part of it. They do not control Anaheim, but have added to our way of life. We need to protect and build our future and like it or not, the Resort is a major part of it. You cannot expect us to flourish if we cannot grow and look to the 22nd Century for opportunities. This is more than just a case of property rights, as it is a case of generating a General Plan and submitting it to the will of the residents for their approval.
Daniel, I like how you are asking questions. I’d like to invite you to attend neighborhood meetings and hear how we view what is happening. You’ve taken the first step to be vocal now take the next step and become informed! WAND Land Use meets the first Wednesday of each month. WAND meets the second Wednesday of each month and the third Wednesday is set aside for WA CDBG meetings. The September meeting of WAND will be held at the Tiger Woods Learning Center on Gilbert starting with a tour of the facility at 6:30 with the meeting to follow. If you are not familiar with WAND, West Anaheim Neighborhood Development Council, please let us know and we will be more than willing to give you some insight. WAND, along with BBCC, has been working together since the mid 90s to preserve and create a better future for WA. We have collaborated with many neighborhoods across Anaheim and have tried to be a voice to support our neighborhoods. I’m sure Cynthia will be more than happy to suggest other meeting for you to attend. This is the time for you; excuse me, everyone to complete our research. Several groups in Anaheim will also be holding candidate forums. Make sure you attend and talk to individuals in attendance.
Keep asking the questions, but the bottom line is Lorri has to go!
By the way, check into where Lorri is getting her funding from...really getting her funding from and how she built her personal account.
I think Lorri will win and Harry will be second. I see a low Republican turn out this election in Orange County, which will benefit Lorri. Harry didn't even carry Anaheim in his run for State Senate. Harry is very weak but he does have name recognition. Steve Perez stands no chance. No one will take him seriously. Gail is a DS and she is trying to court both Republican and Democratic Groups. Gail's only real support has come from Disney. So if you want a Disney councilmember then vote for Gail. John seems like a nice guy but I think he should take off the Log Cabin Republican thing from his website. There are a lot of christian conservative in Anaheim Hills that vote Republican and could be turned off that he is a log cabin republican.
We will have a tough election this year. Harry, Gail and John are competing for the same votes. This could kill Harry.
Many Dems hate Lorri but most of them will vote for her since she is currently the only Dem on the council.
I think you have to watch out also for Roditis. He could be dangerous. I read his candidate statement and I thought it was pretty good. He is the only Dem running beside Lorri. Labor groups that will not support Lorri will most likely back him, because he's not competing with any other Dems.
But if I was making a prediction this is the order the election will come in.
1. Lorri Galloway
2. Harry Sidhu
3. Kostas "Gus" Roditis
4. Gail Eastman
5. John Karczynski
6. Jennifer Rivera
7. Steve Perez
8. Robert Flores
9. Faiz Zuberi
10.Brian Chuchua
What do you guys think?
I think your rather deluded Anonymous, we'll see.
So where do you think you will fall Steve?
Judy,
You are slandering this poor woman. I have done my research now you do yours or stop lying. I know who you are and where you come from. You are twisted in your opposition to Lorri. Get real. PLEASE STOP LYING.
LOOK INTO THE ISSUE OF CORPORATE WELFARE.
LORRI GALLOWAY IS THE ONLY HONEST MEMBER ON COUNCIL!
Daniel, I have never tried to hide my identity. I've even invited you to atend meetings. But, now you accuse me of lying. Prove it! That is what all of us has been asking from you all along.
Check out the latest "new" blog on Red County about Pringle and you will see yet another POV about how Pringle used Chavez and Lorri as puppets to further his agenda. Boy, grow up...You cannot push people away by stating that they have "twisted opposition to Lorri." I am not only stating my opinion, but am stating facts. Where are yours?
LORRI NEEDS TO GO!
Hi I am a resident of Anaheim and would like to get involved in my city some more. Could anyone provide information regarding when Anaheim has it's neighborhood meetings etc. I live in Anaheim Hills.
I hope it is OK with Chris/Jubal to promote another blog here, in an effort to help Dushyant get plugged in. If you are looking for community events, I try to keep up with city-wide stuff at http://anaheimlife.blogspot.com/ and there are plenty of opportunities to get involved with the groups whose events are posted there.
