Irvine Open Thread

It's time for the weekly Tuesday morning Irvine politics post, but, alas, I am not here to do it.

I'm at Burning Man.
If you're going to be on the Playa, drop by Asylum Village (7:30 and A) and look for the big bike. We can catch up on OC Politics over Tanqueray and Tonic
If you're remaining in the "default" world, this is an open thread to:
1. Post any Irvine news that I should have posted if I were here;
2. Complain about stuff I should have posted, but probably wouldn't have even if I were here;
3. Indulge in that favorite OC conservative past time of slagging on the Republic of Irvine; or
4. Gloat that the slaggers are just jealous -- and understandably so.

2008 Elections, Irvine Mayor's Race

As I explain on my blog this morning (dissenttheblog.blogspot.com), two interesting items are on the agenda for tonight's meeting of the South Orange County Community College District board of trustees (of which Irvine Valley College is a part):
* Naming of Health Sciences Building, Room 145, Saddleback College: Approve giving direction to Chancellor to communicate with Mrs. Ronald Reagan to seek permission for naming Health Sciences Building, Room 145, THE RONALD REAGAN BOARD OF TRUSTEES ROOM.
* Invocation: Approve reaffirmation of Board of Trustees commitment to holding invocations at Board meetings and District functions, and to establish a policy for members of the community to offer those invocations.
The open session begins at 6:30—at what, no doubt, soon will be the “Ronald Reagan Board of Trustees Room.”
Egad! Naming the boardroom after Reagan! Invocations!
IT'S THE END OF LIBERTY!!!!!!!!
Dear Hysteric:
Chill out. I informed readers of "two interesting items." Does that really sound "hysterical" too you?
Perhaps you need to take one or two ESL courses. We've got them here at Irvine Valley College.

Anyone have an opinion on this new Irvine Shuttle?(www.irvineshuttle.net). I can see getting people out of their cars might be a good idea but something doesn't smell right. Nearly every study I've seen on public transportation show it to be a boondoggle. I'm hoping I'm wrong here.
Questions/Observations:
Why isn't OCTA doing this? Is there really a cost/benefit value here or is this another boondoggle?
I hear it's packed at lunch but I haven't tried it yet.
I also hear that it's great for people commuting by train from the Tustin train station (Amtrak/Metro).
I see it says "ride free until 2009." What happens to ridership when they start charging?
Just curious.
Check the 8/13 OCR article on this for all you need to know: "Council members Shea and Choi voted against the plan"
$1.1 MM for the first year.
12,500 riders in July.
That's only $7.30 per rider to break even!
Why are we subsidizing this again?
Make that $15.73 per rider for July. It's $1.18 MM for the first half of fy 08/09, which is the second half of calendar 2008. That's $197,000 per month divided by 12,500 riders for July equals $15.73 per rider. That's when it's still "free." Keep in mind that the city is on the hook to buy $4.3MM in buses; right now they're using leased ones.
Somone needs to put the brakes on this bus to nowhere. Hey, maybe we can get Sarah Palin to stop it when she comes to OC later this month?!!!
