1st Supe District Watch: Semi-Annual Campaign Reports

I visited the OC Registrar of Voters yesterday to pick up the 1st Supe District semi-annual campaign reports (they aren't yet online), which were due July 31 and covered the period June14-30. Hoa Van Tran's was actually filed on time (although it's still messed up), but Dina Nguyen was a day late.
First, the fundraising totals for January 1, 2008 through June 30, 2008:
Total Contributions:
Janet Nguyen: $209,2275
Dina Nguyen: $156,349
Hoa Van Tran: $135,073
Total Expenditures
Janet Nguyen: $434,906
Dina Nguyen: $191,572
Hoa Van Tran: $142,135
Unpaid Bills
Janet Nguyen: $87,003
Dina Nguyen: $34,669
Hoa Van Tran: $7,331
Neither Dina nor Hoa raised a dime in the month following the election, in contrast to fund-raising machine Janet, who added another $9,848 to her coffers in June from sources one would expect to donate to a supervisor.
Dina Nguyen loaned her campaign $25,000, while Hoa Van Tran loaned himself $76,861.77. Hoa did forgive himself for $861.77. Maybe he likes owing himself round numbers.
Hoa received late contributions from "Jim Moreno for Coast Community College" on June 1 -- which was subsequently refunded. Larry Agran chipped in $500 on June 1. Democrat Mike Flory, the Deputy District Attorney who was running for Judge on the same ballot, chipped in $200 to the controversial Hoa on June 1 and another $200 on June 3. Good to know one of our prosecutors can overlook the Hoa campaign's enmeshment with gang members and help out a fellow Dem...but not so far out from Election Day that it would cause Flory PR problems.
As I mentioned earlier, Hoa Van Tran still filed to file the report correctly. The campaign marked the filing as both the "Semi-annual statement" and an "Amendment." Hoa was supposed to filed two separate reports, but instead just lumped them both together. That may not strike some as a big deal, but it's another example of the continuing, astonishing incompetence of Hoa Van Tran's compliance efforts.
The OC Registrar's office left the campaign a phone message on Monday, regarding the campaign report.
