A Farewell To The LA Times' David Reyes

The explosion of the new media has not been kind to the newspaper industry. Newspapers find themselves in a position akin to buggy whip manufacturers at the dawn of the automobile age, trying to figure out whether they were buggy whip manufacturers, or transportation accessory manufacturers.
In the process of adapting the rise of blogs annd other online news sources has led newspapers to downsize, an unfortunate byproduct of which is they are losing many fine, experienced reporters. Among them is one of Orange County's finest, fairest and longest-serving reporters: David Reyes, who recently departed the Los Angeles Times after 29 years.
Yesterday, OCEA General manager Nick Berardino organized a ceremony recognizing David. Nick invited David's LAT colleagues, Steve Greenhut from the OC Register, myself and local politicos George Urch and Brett Barbre. It was a bittersweet event: Berardino was his usual funny self, as he and AOCDS President Wayne Quint presented David with commemorative plaques amidst good-natured ribbing primarily directed at Greenhut.
It was gracious thing for Nick and Wayne to do, and David Reyes was obviously touched. Good luck to you, David, and I hope you remain a part of the news game.

I would not have missed it, mainly because Dave Reyes is one of the good guys. Thank you Nick for the invitation.
His reporting was always fair and, like any good reporter, would always return his calls. Of course I didn't always appreciate his voice mails to "Meester Brett" following a loss by the Boston Red Sox.
Dave's retirement is yet another loss for the Orange County press community. If I had a nickel for all the good reporters that have left in the 25 years I have been doing political press in Orange County I would have at least a quarter...
Dave was a reporter you could always trust to get the information right. He covered transportation issues here in Orange County for quite awhile and was always fair in his approach. On top of that, he has a great sense of humor about the political world and the cast of characters he got to cover. We miss you Dave!
