Those proposed tax increase discussions in Costa Mesa are telling. The attitude is typical: since CMs business license fees (always a blatant rip-off) and bed taxes are below the average they can be targeted for increase - despite the fact that a lower average makes CM more competitive.
Will anybody talk about layoffs, or delaying step increases, or scaling back on the park program? I wonder.
At least the discussions involve puting the thing on the ballot. At least in doing a referendum they can avoid the errors of other high-handed city councils who just take their marching orders from staff and approve the thing.
