Debbie Cook Thinks You're Selfish and Genetically Defective

Debbie Cook, the Democratic candidate for California's 46th Congressional seat, has strong thoughts on the environment and leaves little to no room for debating the rightness or wrongness of those positions. She also has equally strong words for those who disagree with her.
In a candid interview with the Orange Coast Voice in September 2006 (available here), then-Mayor Cook discussed peak oil and her frustration with educating voters about environmental issues. At one point in the interview, the interviewer simply states: "The vast majority of people in this world are ignorant of what's going on," to which Ms. Cook responds, "And when you tell them they don't care. People are selfish and don't care." (Emphasis added).
But more than that, Ms. Cook believes that people who dare question her views on the environment do so because they are just not right. Wrapping up her interview, Ms. Cook states, "It's like with oil. [People think] it's not out problem; we're not going to have to deal with it in my lifetime, that's our kid's problem." In response to this statement, Ms. Cook rhetorically asks, "What kind of mentality thinks that way?" The questions is rhetorical because in the next setence, M. Cook answers the question: "It's definitely a genetic defect."
Ms. Cook's ad hominem attacks do nothing to advance her agenda, and is all too characteristic of a group of partisans that spurn debate on the subject.

WOW, Joseph.
Thanks for doing the research and reminding us that Debbie Cook was right about oil back when we were paying 2 bucks a gallon for gas.
While Dana talks about dinosaur farts.
You're right, Debbie should be nicer to the genetically deficient and ignorant if she wants them to vote for her. She really is one big meanie, isn't she.
Lol sounds like these Dems are a little hypersensitive about anything that can prove derogatory to Cook's election.
Face it Dems: Cook is just a whacko treehugger who believes bears carry more value than humans. Orange County voters don't agree with the idea that we pump gas in our cars because we're "genetically deficient".
Cook is done. Put a fork in her.
While genetic defect may be strong language, it really does puzzle me that there are so many people who are willing to borrow massive sums and pass the debt onto their children and grandchildren, and do similar things by exhausting our natural resources beyond any sustainable limits.
World oil production has been flat for three years, with most major fields in decline, and we blame everyone except ourselves for the problem. If it's not a genetic defect, it's certainly wlllful suspension of disbelief.
In one sense Cook is right: Human beings ARE selfish and think almost exclusively of their own interests. But this isn't a "genetic defect" -- in fact, it's an evolutionary advantage that allowed humans to prosper by giving them a strong sense of self-preservation.
Overcoming that instinctive selfishness has been the theme of much of religion of the last 5,000 years. To care about someone else's needs above one's own is illogical, but necessary for personal growth. Unfortunately we've lost much of that as a culture as religion has been sidelined in American discourse.
Humans are selfish and it is genetic
To deny this fact of life is self-serving and therefore also selfish and genetic
Vote for whom you choose but she impresses me more every day because she doesn't mince her words to satisfy a demographic
And does not her statement explain Rohrabacher perfectly?
Great post! You must have struck a nerve with the local lefties, Joseph, brining them out to defend Debbie Cook's lefty elitism.
How about this for a new campaign slogan: "Vote for Debbie Cook, so she can decide what's best for all you stupid, selfish people."
Well, Dana hopes that the families of people who protest the war should be hurt or killed in the next terrorist attack. I love this post. Its July and the righties here are digging up articles from 2006 to discredit Cook and it only proves how vulnerable Dana is in this election. Nice.
Hey, I wasn't defending her, I was agreeing with you guys. She really is mean! I would have my feelings hurt too if I were you.
Actually I just ran across this post because someone told me Jubal did one on my healthcare editorial. I'll be responding to that later... but this one was more fun.
Yeah, those lousy conservatives: "digging up" Debbie's publicly stated beliefs. The nerve!
I repeat, does not her statement explain Rohrabacher perfectly?
His recent behavior exemplifies his ability to repudiate that which he supported a few months ago
He is demonstrates self-preservation exclusively and has done so for his entire time in office
Who is selfish?
I need to jump into my Escalade (that gets 11mpg) and roll to my 5,000 sqft home (that I keep at a comfy 67 degree's). The home that I bought by taking all the equity out one of my other homes, that I'll probably walk away from the loan and default.
Mayor Cook was way ahead of a lot of leaders in the area of energy. The OC political landscape is made up a many do nothings, Cook has worked hard to make a difference and will continue to do so as our Congresswoman.
As for the ignorance issue... Student just said, "Dina's up to 70% in the polls! And Janet is still a communist".
How typical of an effete elitist classless Democrat. She can't come up with a believable argument, so let's just attack based on the same logic (that is, none) that Debbie used to support her BOGUS peak oil myths.
If you think Peak Oil is bogus then now is the time go out and get the biggerst, most-tricked out SUV on the planet.
Not gonna do it are you, Dana-backward follower
Smart Boy!
That means you know there is a liquid fuels problem that isn't going away no matter how many holes are drilled into the earth
So...just say, "The end of cheap oil is here"
Same thing as Peak Oil but it might make you feel better?
Oh, and FYI...that is exactly what the CEO of every major oil company in the world is saying...without exception. The era of cheap oil is over.
Now it will get interesting. Who really knows their stuff?
I doubt most in Congress don't on either side of the aisle
