Changes At The Sheriff's Department

One of our new Blogpen members, CotoBlogzz, already posted about Sheriff Sandra Hutchens hiring of former LA Sheriff's Department colleague as a departmental consultant, and other changes are afoot at the OCSD.
As the LAT reported yesterday, Sheriff Hutchens will forgo the driver and security detail utilized by former Sheriff Mike Carona. Good move -- both fiscally and in PR terms. It re-inforces the "unCarona" image, and its hard to see the need for the Orange County Sheriff to have a security detail.
Hutchens has also made some staff changes in her executive office, promoting Ryan Burris to the position Assistant to the Sheriff. Ryan joined the OCSD in January 2003 as Sheriff Carona's staff writer and later Deputy Director of Public and Community Relations.
Ryan's job will be to serve "as liaison between the office of the Sheriff annd other elected officials, various county departments, agencies, authorities and jurisdictions. He will provide direction on the development and implementation of strategic priorities and key policies, and oversee projects as necessary."
I don't know whether or not this is a new position, but it has the ring of a "right-hand man" slot. Ryan strikes me as a good choice. I don't know him that well, but he's a courteous, serious, down-to-earth guy who I have found helpful and open and honest -- qualities that will serve him well as Hutchens' intergovernmental liaison.
I'll add that it speaks well of Sheriff Hutchens that she zeroed in on those qualities, rather than unfairly let them be blotted out by the "Carona taint."

OC Sheriff's Department

The OC Fair starts today. Do you suppose Hutchens has any extra tickets?
Ryan is great and will do a fantastic job!
When is she going to get rid of that Jim Amormino. Every time we see him on television, it's like looking at Mike Carona all over again.
Surely there is one person in the entire OCSD Hutchens can find as a spokesman so we don't have to watch Carona's mouthpiece for another year!

He's a public employee with property rights to his job, so she can't just get rid of him (unlike the asstaint sheriffs who serve at will.) As a result, you'll probably be seeing him around for a while.
