UPDATE: Court Extends TRO On Edgardo Until June 23
Posted by: Jubal | 06/06/2008 10:00 AM
Commissioner Jane Myers agreed to extend the temporary restraining order against Hoa Van Tran campaign manager Edgardo Reynoso until June 23, which is the day she scheduled for a two-hour hearing on former Hoa staffer Courtney Rychel's allegation that Reynoso attempted to run her off the road.
There's more to report, but let's examine a strange aspect of Edgardo's retaliatory lawsuit.
The alleged Edgardo road rage incident took place on May 21 at around 12:30 p.m. Yet in his lawsuit, Edgardo's alibi is that he was in his office at that time with the campaign treasurer, and that Hoa Van Tran, Kimchi Nguyen and someone else are witnesses to that.
Which may very well be true, since Edgardo swears in the lawsuit that phone call with all those witnesses took place on May 22.
Oops.
Back to the hearing.
Courtney Rychel told the court she "feared for her life and the safety of her family" and asked Commissioner Myers to extend the TRO for another 30 days while she hires an attorney and prepares her case. She informed the court that Edgardo Reynoso is being investigated by the OC Sheriff's Department for gang ties and by the District Attorney.
The commissioner said she wouldn't extend it that long, but was amendable to a two week extension. Courtney Rychel said that would be fine.
Commissioner Myers asked Courtney if she'd received Edgardo's response. She said she had not, so the judge lent her her copy to look at while Courtney, Edgardo and his Phu Do Nguyen-supplied attorney stood before the court.
Courtney re-affirmed she had not seen the response. Edgardo's attorney -- Thuy Nguyen (H/T Bolsavik) responded that it had been mailed to Courtney and she had time to read it. Commissioner Myer responded that since it was only filed yesterday, there's no way it would have reached Ms. Rychel in time.
Thuy Nguyen tried to argue against extending the TRO for another two weeks, saying she would be on vacation from June 14 through the 21. Commissioner Myers responded to this by re-stating her initial reluctance to extend it more than two weeks, but smiled slightly and told Edgardo's attorney she had just given her a reason to do so, and set it for June 23.
A few minutes later, Rychel emerged with her parents, Misha Houser (this was the first time I had actually met her in person), and a friend. Chris Prevatt from TheLiberalOC.com rolled up a few minutes before that.
A few minutes later, Edgardo strode out of the courtroom with his attorney by his side, with Hoa Van Tran trailing symbolically in his wake.

What's with these people? Don't they do anything on time?
Hoa Van Tran trailing symbolically in his wake.
Thank God we were spared this fool being elected to any office. Can someone please promise me his political career is over?
Jubal,
Think you missed your calling, you should have be an old style mystery/suspense writer. Got to hand it to you, you do the best job of reporting blow by blow accounts of OC's political proceedings.
I'm already looking forward to your Carona trial reports!
You left out the fact that it was Courtney who asked for the continuance because she was unable to find an attorney to represent her on such short notice.
Funny…wasn’t this hearing about the TRO brought forth by Courtney? Thus how come she wasn’t prepared for her own hearing? And didn’t Edgardo have the same amount of time to prepare? This doesn’t make sense.
Courtney, for your sake, I hope you find a good attorney who will represent your best interest, and NOT anybody else’s…
Well someone is lying.
jail time for edgardo or cleaning out the dpoc.
ps Matt you get a good look at Misha...make sure get the seat right next to her on the 23rd to be sure.
pps. was that the political director of the dpoc at the hearing?
at least now marc wussman at Sanchez's office can now focus his brilliance upon Debbie Cook's campaign. Go Debbie.
The hearing yesterday was indeed quite amusing...first courtney begged for a 30 day extension from the court and the court would not allow it but was amenable to a two week extension. Edgardo's counsel objected to the 30 days.
She then lied to the court when she said she never received the answers which detailed edgardo's defense...She probably realized she needed more time to change her story...I think courtney realized she was in over her head when she filed this tro otherwise she would have not asked for a continuance. And finally to make it worst she implicated the DPOC...Smart move...
Good luck to you Courtney...
And you sir, are clearly a hack for the Hoa Van Tran gang.
There is no doubt in my mind the Courtney Rychel is a truthful young woman, and that you are a small-time smear-monger.
Even Commissioner Myer wasn't buying Thuy Nguyen's contention that she had mailed the response and Courtney should have it.
Good luck Courtney. The Hoa camp lost twice last week. So far you are 1-0, the Hoa camp is 0-2.
I was wondering why the phrase "This does not make sense says" appeared twice in the comments to my post on this issue.
Now I know. The person was just copying and pasting.
Didn't want to respond before; doing so now: If all the things you're saying here is at all relevant, why didn't Reynoso's lawyer say it in court? If she did say it in court and the judge/commissioner didn't buy it, why are you repeating it here (and on bolsavik.com)? Duh.
