Harry Sidhu Failed To Carry His Own City Against Mimi Walters
By Matthew Cunningham | 06/20/08 | 09:15 AM EDT | 0 Comments
I wrote last week that I didn't think Anaheim Councilman Harry Sidhu's shattering SD33 primary defeat at the hands of Assemblywoman Mimi Walters would seriously hinder his council re-election bid.
After looking at the precinct-by-precinct results, I'm not so sure.
There are 738 precincts in the 33rd Senate Districts. Harry Sidhu only carried five of them. Five. Out of 738. That's 0.6% of all precincts.
What could be worse than winning only 5 out 738 precincts district-wide?
If you're an Anaheim Councilman preparing to seek re-election, the answer would be losing all but one of Anaheim's 58 precincts in SD33.
In other words, after four years on the city council, Harry Sidhu was unable to carry Anaheim -- where he had already been on the ballot twice -- against a South County legislator who had never before faced Anaheim voters. Even in that single precinct only went for Harry by a single vote: 41-40.
Apparently, toward the end of the campaign, the Walters campaign also deliberately mailed to those Anaheim precincts that were outside of the 33rd Senate District -- sort of an in-your-face to Sidhu.
The final tally in Anaheim:
Mimi Walters: 3,619 61.25%
Harry Sidhu: 2,290 38.75%
Harry has his re-election work cut out for him, and he clearly seems to realize it. The Walters' campaign hit him hard on the issue of free tickets to city-owned sports and entertainment venues, and when the OC Register did a story on the subject last week, Harry couldn't run away from the issue fast enough:
There are two Anaheim council seats on the November ballot, and both incumbents -- Sidhu and Lorri Galloway -- are seeking re-election.
Anaheim Union High School District Hoagy Holguin is rumored to be pondering a run (Holguin endorsed Sidhu for state Senate), and perennial candidate John Karcynski will likely be on the ballot as well.
But the only non-incumbent candidate with a credible chance is Anaheim Planning Commissioner Gail Eastman. Eastman has the support of SOAR, the Disney-creation that fronted its effort to fight (successfully) the doomed SunCal residential development in Anaheim ( I was a consultant on the doomed side).
Thus far, no other really credible candidates have emerged.
How Eastman's candidacy and SOAR/Disney's involvement plays out in this triangulation will be an interesting question to examine in the coming weeks.
Any wagers on how long until the SidhuMobile re-emerges?

Councilman Harry Sidhu, when contacted by the Register, asked if he could call back "in 15 minutes" - and then had the city attorney return the call.Still, harry can take some comfort in the reality that you can't beat someone with no one - and thus far, there's a dearth of credible challengers.
