House Democrats Call For Nationalizing Oil Refineries

Posted by: Jubal | 06/18/2008 6:01 PM

I spotted this on the Drudge Report:

House Democrats responded to President's Bush's call for Congress to lift the moratorium on offshore drilling. This was at an on-camera press conference fed back live.

Among other things, the Democrats called for the government to own refineries so it could better control the flow of the oil supply.

How's that for genius? We'll put a sclerotic federal bureaucracy in charge of refineries, because we all know who nimble and efficient government is in responding to markets.

At least we know the brain-dead, knee-jerk Democratic instinct to throw government control at any problem is still intact.

Does HB Mayor Debbie Cook support nationalizing the refineries? How about Rep. Loretta Sanchez?

Unfortunately, after 7.5 years of Dubya-style conservatism, the Republicans don't have a high moral ground from which to criticize socialism and heavy-handed federal control. No Child Left Behind, REAL ID, the Patriot Act -- the Republican Party has joined the Democrats in the race to find government solutions for everything.

THANK YOU for slapping Debbie Cook here, Matt.

She wouldn't nationalize them, she'd just ban them altogether! Learn how to ride a horse, everyone.

The city council is a 3-ring circus of true losers here in Huntington Beach. Please slap again whenever you get the chance.

Mr Whipple,
I think it would be more correct to say that The GOP has beaten the Democrats in finding a broken Government run solution to everything.

The question for Republicans is how they are going to spin their excuses of "we feel terrible for having to do this, but gas prices are so high, blah, blah....we had no other choice" Seriously, they have no ground to stand on here after what Mr Whipple alluded to. They've presided over the biggest growth in government in the history of the country.

Last I checked Tesoro lost money in the last two quarters. I have not followed it closely but the apparently this quarter they lost big time when they tried to hedge their natual gas costs or some such thing.

I think Valero barely made a profit last quarter and what they managed to squeeze out probably was due to their ability to handle more sour crude than other refineries.

What more could people expect when the refineries are already selling at below cost?

Allan and Mr Whipple,

I feel your pain and need for mourning. But further trashing of Republicans isn't going to help.

Which government programs do you want to see pulled back first? Which are the most politically achievable? Thanks to the Bush years we are in a "Target Rich Environment."

HEY! Where's the great big THANK YOU that we conservationists deserve?

When we began the effort to keeping drilling out of the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge oil was $20/bbl oil. If Matt gets his way, the US treasury will now get royalties of $120/bbl, or more, on that same oil. Show me another political agenda, left or right, that has achieved that kind of profit!

Jubal said:

Tyler is right. House Democrats advocate refinery socialism, and all Allan and Mr. Whipple can say is "Damn the Republicans"?

Keep up the defeatism -- it certainly encourages the Left!

Matt you'll have to forgive me if I've become very jaded about the direction our party has gone in the last few years. A lot of damage has been done to our brand. We can't just keep telling voters what we believe and what our priciples are and then have our elected leaders sell out those principles on almost every chance they get. Eventually people get wise to that.
