Video:Harry Sidhu's Shredder Presser Pledging Positive Campaign
Posted by: Jubal | 05/22/2008 10:20 AM
Sorry for the delay, but here is the video of yesterday's press conference at which Anaheim Councilman Harry Sidhu attacked the "Orange County Grand Jury Report" hit piece sent out by the campaign of rival Assemblyman Mimi Walters.
The big news was Sidhu's pledge to abjure from any further negative campaigning, followed by the public shredding of what I ballpark estimate to be more than a $100,000 worth of mail.
The first clip is Sidhu criticizing the Grand Jury Report mailer and defending his record:
The second clip is Sidhu promising to go strictly positive:
The third clip picks up near the tail end of Harry answering a question from Martin Wisckol, responding to rumors he's parted ways with Coronado Communications, and then the shredding begins.
It'll be interesting to see how Harry's gambit plays out.

I'm shocked - shocked! Elected official like Mimi Walters sends out deceptive and misleading letters to voters. It is clear that this time again her intention was to lie to voters.
If that was a business mailer, Walters could be sued under California's Unfair Business Practices laws. It's a shame we have lower legal standards for political mailers allowing them to legally mislead our public.
I applaud Harry Sidhu for his honorable decision not to lower to Walters level. Let her play in the gutter... GO HARRY! Let the most honorable and ethical leader win in this race.
This pledge to run a "clean" campaign is the biggest bull I've ever seen!
Harry Sidhu has spent over a half million dollars on negative mail and television advertisements. Harry Sidhu has spent more on negative mail than Mimi Walters. Hary Sidhu has spent more on negative mail than Harry Sidhu has spent on positive mail.
Harry Sidhu is the negative candidate. Now he's pledging to give up his negative campaigning ways? Believe it when pigs fly!
Harry Sidhu has lost all credibility with this voter.
Where did you get your numbers? Please share with us.
I'm not going to disclose my sources. Who do you think I am? I was born at night, but not last night.
Sidhu lies over and over again about Mimi's votes and calls her a liberal time and time again (when she has the most conservative voting record of any Republican in the Assembly) --- then he cries like a baby when she hits him back.
I think Harry needs to man up - politics is not for sissies.
Lest anyone forget, especially Anonymous, it was Mr. Sidhu who launched the first salvo in this negative campaign.
What a stupid stunt. Shredding your own hit pieces after sending out multiple others. The most likely explaination is that Sidhu realized his hits weren't working.
Jubal - $100,000 of mail would be something like a million pieces since only the printing, not the postage has been paid for. Do you really think it was that much?
Get real people. The OC Grand Jury has condemned Walters' misleading and decpeptive mailer. And don't forget that anti-immigration leader Barbara Coe sided with Sidhu when Wisckol asked her about the Walters' attack on Sidhu. Like I said. Get real people.
Does anyone know where Harry stands on Chuck DeVore's industrial hemp bill? Will he support it?
Also, does Harry support "casino night" fundraisers for charities? Not monetarily, but does he think they should be permitted.
I noticed that Mimi Walters supporters here conveniently prefer not to discuss the OC Grand Jury letter that was deceptive and misleading to voters. The OC Grand Jury even had to come up with a press release to state that. If they had any balls at all they would admit that they sided with a lier... Mimi Walters has lost all credibility with this voter.
The fish rots from the head down.
Distorting records is the usual in politics. Appealing to bigotry is not. Sending deceptive mailers that pretend be from a government body is not.
The rot in the Walters campaign starts with her. I've completely lost respect for her.
The lies associated with this press conference start with Harry Sidhu. His supposed impetus for calling the press conference was a lie. OC Blogger "Tomahawk" even congratulated Sidhu for the lie! So the righteous Sidhu partisans can step back.
Harry Sidhu has run an overwhelmingly negative and deceitful campaign. It's amazing anyone could be so obtuse and fall for this cheap trick of his.
Wow are you spinning the spin. Word that Sidhu had called for a press conference starts to get out the day before. Everyone on this blog, not Sidhu, starts posting wild imagings on what it would be about. Guess we all have nothing better to do. So we spin, spin, spin. The Walters' mailer has been condemned by the OC Grand Jury as deceptive and misleading. Sidhu set the record straight at his presser on the claims in that mailer and pledged to go positive. Tell it like it is. Gimme a break, already.
And Sidhu spent the first half of his "I'm only positive" press conference bashing Mimi. He couldn't even keep his "pledge" for two minutes. Imagine what a trustworthy delight he'd be as a senator. People cannot be falling for his disingenuous baloney.
On "Anonymous" post
The only disingenuous baloney being served up seems to be from commenters who refuse to stop the spin cycle of the Walters' machine. The first part of that press conference as I see it on this post and from what's reported in the actual OC Register press on it has Sidhu setting the record straight on the Walters' mailer. Oh yeah that same Walters' mailer that just happened to be condemned as misleading and deceptive by the OC Grand Jury the same day. Wowzer.
It is shameful and embarrassing to intentionally falsify the OC Grand Jury letter, and lie about your opponent to the voters and get caught. The last person I would expect it from is elected official like Mimi Walters.
Is this is how you intend to represent us in senate?? by the means of cheating and lying whenever it suits you?? You need to send voters an apology for this misleading and deceptive mailer, and you need to apologize to Orange County Grand Jury, and you need to apologize to Harry Sidhu again.
Harry Sidhu should apologize for once again misleading the public and shredding old mail pieces. He implied that he was getting rid of negative attacks he had planned to send out. In fact, he was getting rid of leftovers (housecleaning). He carried out a very lame - and fake - about face.
I haven't seen any of Harry Sidhu's supporters refute that he was in fact shredding old leftover mail that he has already sent out. The silence is deafening, and a sign of guilt.
What makes you think the same mailers weren't about to be dropped to other voters in the district? Guess you're a politidal novice.
I think the sign of a political novice is ANYONE who believes Harry's lame snake oil side show. I mean, come on, that mail was total leftovers and if you believe otherwise, I have two bridges I can sell you.
Leftovers my eye. Sidhu must have been staggering his mailings to voters. Nobody has 140k in leftovers. That's the number Wisckol reported. Those babies were set to roll to the next batch of good ol' GOP zips.
There's always tons of leftover mail in political campaigns. They print extra in the event they want to use them as walk pieces and because it was probably cheaper to print them in bulk. Also, the window of opportunity for Sidhu to mail to absentees (the largest block of voters in this election) probably already came and went, so it meant nothing.
If they in fact shredded 140,000 mail pieces - and I question that number - they should have gotten that press conference sponsored ... by the shredder's company.
I've owned and used a number of shredders in my life, both at home and the office, and I don't know any shredder that could handle 140,000 card stock mail pieces continuously for as long as it would take to shred them. They jam if you put in any more than (maybe) two card stock sheets or they overheat from continuous use.
Wisckol's a politically savvy reporter. I'll go with his count and take on the facts.
