The Bi-Partisan "OC Republican Team"
Posted by: Jubal | 05/27/2008 3:49 PM
This seems to happen every few election cycles.
Today the "Orange County Republican Leadership Voter Guide" arrived at Casa de Jubal. On the back is a list of 12 candidates, presented as "Your Orange County Republican Team."
One member of this "Orange County Republican Team" is Democratic judge candidate Debra Carillo -- who is also endorsed by the Democratic Party of Orange County.
You gotta love the slates.

Chris:
I meant no disrespect to Debra. I'm voting for Kermit Marsh, but if he were not in the race, I'd be voting for Carillo.
I just thought it was funny that the "OC Republican Team" included a Democrat.
No disrespect taken. Unfortunately, some of the very WORST justices in American history--such as Earl Warren and William Brennan--have been Republicans. Party affiliation often doesn't mean much when it come to judicial behavior.
Matt.
You and I both know how slates operate. In fact I was on a Democratic slate with Bill Clinton in the 90's.
Except for the top of the ticket whose name and photo, such as presidential candidates, are included at no cost and without their approval, the rest of the card slots are up for sale.
For example. If you have two seats up for grabs in a local city council race the producers of the slates offer two slots where typically incumbents get first dibs. They do not tell you who else will appear unless you are a campaign manager buying both. In this election we received an absentee chase slate from the "California Voter Guide" which is addressed "Attention Republicans" and another called the "OC Republican Leadership Voter Guide." Many of these are partisan races yet they will still take your money to fill the card regardless of your party registration.
I was burned in 1994 because I took a slot on a card not knowing that it included an ad supporting an international airport at MCAS El Toro which I strongly opposed. That combination, appearing on the same slate, was used in a last minute hit piece against me in that election.
A lot of Dems are now supporting Janet Nguyen for 1st Supervisor, so let's call this a trade. Perhaps your headline would be more accurate if instead it stated "The Non-Partisan 'OC Republican Team'." Why such a partisan bias Matt? Nevermind, that's too easy. :P
