Staffers or Volunteers?

Posted by: Tomahawk | 05/19/2008 11:59 PM

After the OC Register broke the story about Hoa Van Tran's campaign staffers getting arrested on attempted murder charges -- the news spread quickly in Little Saigon and the Nguoi Viet Daily News ran with it here.

However, there seems to be a slight different between what Edgardo Reynoso (campaign manager) said to Peggy Lowe and Phu Do Nguyen's response (campaign treasurer) to the Vietnamese publication.

Reynoso's response to Lowe is, and I quote, "To our knowledge, there are no gang members on our campaign. Hoa Van Tran is very much, very much concerned with the problems that gangs present to our community."

Typical lawyerly response, but then again do we expect anything better?

And here is Phu Do Nguyen's response to the Nguoi Viet Daily, in translation, "Those two individuals are activists, they are volunteers, not staffers."

At least this is a lot more definitive than the "To our knowledge..." line.

So are the two arrested suspects paid employees are are they just volunteers?  Either Phu Do Nguyen is lying or the Orange County Register printed misinformation with this headline: Campaign workers for supervisor candidate jailed in shooting.

That's a distinction without a difference. Men that spend hours and hours every day in your campaign office are your campaign workers, regardless of whether you paid them.

It's like Cuong Bui and the Trung Nguyen campaign. When Bui's Photoshop work came to light, the Trung Nguyen campaign claimed that it was the work of a volunteer -- as if that made it less Trung's fault.

It didn't work for Trung, and won't work for Phu either.

And btw why won't they let Hoa talk?

Hey Scoop, I mean Tomahawk:

One question for you, the answer is not as obvious as you may think:

What are the motives of the people releasing this information?

a. To warn the people living in Central Orange County that there's a gang problem.

b. To continue to attack and belittle the campaign on a different subject since they knew that Hoa's campaign was not in violation of finance reporting laws.

c. To suppress support for the only Democrat running because if Hoa makes it to the run off against either Janet or Dina, he is likely to receive a significant amount of financial support from labor and other Democratic institutions along with the expected Democratic voting surge in the Fall.

d. To suppress white voters from supporting Janet Nguyen.

Think about it.

Bolsavik,

I understand Misha "I-did-NOT-steal-that-computer" Houser needs a lawyer. Perhaps YOU could represent her, being the great ESQUIRE that you are, were, or will never be again.

See ya in the run-offs.

Sorry Tammy, but I think Hoa's hopes of helping Dina force a run off are pretty dim at this point.

Dina's going to have to do this on her own, now.

If you think Hoa has any chance of making it to a run off, I have an application to Starfleet Academy you might want to fill out.

Hoa Tran is a puppet candidate operated by an unethical campaign manager. He doesn't know enough about money to correctly supervise his campaign's financial reports.

Do you want this man running the county? I'd rather have Karl Rove or Rush Limbaugh. At least either of them knows how to think for themselves.

Thank God Hoa has no chance of being elected.
