SD33 Mailbox: Sidhu Mails To Viet Voters
Posted by: Jubal | 05/12/2008 5:40 PM
Calling all Vietnamese speakers!Given my absolute inability to speak or read any Vietnamese, I'm relying on the kindness of OC Blog readers to translate this Vietnamese language letter sent out by the Harry Sidhu for Senate campaign.
It's signed by four leading elected members of Assemblyman Van Tran's operation:
Westminster Councilman Tri TaA Van Tran endorsement has its advantages.
Westminster Mayor Pro Tem Andy Quach
Garden Grove Councilwoman Dina Nguyen
Garden Grove School District Trustee Trung Nguyen
I'm curious on what basis they are asking recipients to support Harry Sidhu. Since the recipient of this letter is a Viet resident of Lake Forest, it's clearly not on the basis of the signers' jurisdictional affiliation.

All of these lower elected officials endorsed Harry Sidhu well before Van Tran formally endorsed.
Obviously, they left off Andrew Nguyen because he's a Democrat, but why did they throw Truong Diep under the bus?
If those other guys endorsed ahead of Tran, then it really looks as if the fix was in.
Message from Van Tran:
If you are a sitting member of the Board of Supervisors or the State Legislature and you vote with the conservatives, Van Tran will endorse against you or might even recruit candidates against you.
LOL
You really had to conjure up some conspiracy theory to come up with that one. How about this message instead:
If you are a good Republican and a good teamplayer, Van Tran may endorse you and may put his machine behind you.
The Walters team can spin it anyway they want to, but that's the bottom line. Van never said Mimi is not a conservative, all he did was endorse Harry for being someone Van sees eye to eye with. Simple as that.
I heard Duane Dichiara doesn't think too highly of Diep to use his name.
Surely there are some Vietnamese-AMERICAN voters in the 33rd SD who will be offended by the Van Tran exploitation machine. I know quite a few Hispanic surnamed REPUBLICANS who are offended by the bilingual fundraising mail pieces from the CRP and RNC.
The assumption here is that Vietnamese-AMERICAN voters aren't individuals, that they can't speak or haven't learned English, and that they unhesitatingly follow Van Tran. What an insult!
Come on..... The establishment getting a little nervous? Let the best candidate win. Remember no election was ever won on the blog...... why don’t you spend your time doing something worthwhile like contacting voters.
Milk Man, say what you will..... DDD and Van serve a valuable purpose, they build the future of our party. For that we are indebted to them.
FYI - Diep cut his teeth walking precincts for DDD 7 days a week while in college for Shirley Horton’s landmark campaign.
"Given my absolute inability to speak or read any Vietnamese..."
Come now. Don't be so modest. I'm sure you can say "pho."
Just pulled up the PDF.
What's interesting is that NOWHERE does it call for the letter's recipient to vote for Siddhu because he's a good Republican or good conservative. Totally quiet on that subject.
Which illustrates two points I've made before: (a) that Vietnamese-Americans may be rabidly anti-communist (and therefore love guys like Bob Dornan) but are not conservative in the "limited government" sense; and (b) Politically savvy guys like Van Thai Tran know it.
Anyway, the first several paragraphs talk about Siddhu's experience as an immigrant going through the same experience as Vietnamese immigrants. (No mention of Siddhu's position on illegal immigration either.)
Then the last paragraph is this:
"We need more friends in Sacramento who will be side by side with the community in the fight for freedom and human rights inside the country" [meaning Vietnam].
How does Harry Sidhu, a member of the minority party in the State Senate, fight for human rights inside Vietnam?! That's the biggest piece of horse manure we've seen in this campaign yet!
I'd much rather Harry Sidhu - IF he were elected to the State Senate - focus on fighting Californians' problems, California taxpayers' problems, than Vietnam's problems. Maybe that's been Tran's problem all along. His stature and priorities are all mixed up.
Foreign policy is well within the federal government's jurisdiction. Unless it involves state taxpayer money, I'd prefer our Republican State Senators to stay far away from it.
H/T to Bolsavik for the paraphrased translation.
Bolsavik,
I have been trying to tell the Democratic Party that same thing for along time. Its fallen on deaf ears. The Democratic Party has a long way to go with relation to making their case before the Vietnamese Community in large numbers. However, a larger number of Vietnamese Voters are becoming Democrats. Mostly young voters. The GOP dominance in the Vietnamese Community is nearing the endo f its shlef life. But it is still quite a ways off.
Paul, your party is dysfunctional because you guys can't even support the only Democrat running for Supervisor. Instead, you have theLiberalOC and former staffer going after the guy.
I'm not saying Hoa Van Tran's should not be penalized for his shadiness, it is just funny that the hardest people on him are members of his own party.
I cannot wait for the Trannies to use Hoa as an example of how the DPOC will treat ethnic candidates.
I don't get what's wrong with sending a mailer to Vietnamese in their native language.
Many immigrants and children of recent immigrants speak their native language at home. What's wrong with that? Please tell me that our party is not this xenophobic.
Demography is destiny. The demographics of this state and nation are changing. Will the GOP go the way of GM? Will we have our fortunes decline as our customer base of white middle aged and senior voters fades away, and is replaced with latinos and asians?
Harry Sidhu could certainly use his Senate seat as a bully pulpit to argue for the rights of native Vietnamese. Wouldn't that be a good thing for the GOP? I mean, didn't thousands of our young men give their lives fighting for those same people? It would be a tribute to their sacrifice, and advance the GOP among Vietnamese immigrants and their children. (Memories of their mother country is still fresh for generations of immigrants, even though it may have vanished from your family's memory.)
Yes, foreign policy is the province of the federal government, but so is immigration policy. But state and local politicians are waving that flag.
I begin to think our party is led by hopeless mediocrity. The real brains operate in the private sector.
What is big deal here? simply all elected Viet community leaders are supporting Harry Sidhu!
I think people are mis spelling Me Me Walters for reason.
Bolsavik thinks all people should speak or read Vietnamese .........even you are not a Vietnamese.
" ..... I am sure you can say pho.."
We need to check Bolsavik's citizenship!
Knowing the name of Viet dish does not make someone a Vietnamese speaker.
CRA(CIST) REPUBLICAN
Not being Vietnamese does not discount someone from having an opinion on Vietnamese politics.
I just clicked on Tri Ta, from Westminster and found that his wife's maiden name is Doan, any relation to the Doan that keeps up the vigil against the Ngoi Viet Newspaper?
Anon.11:36 aka Bolsavik, Dem activist, everyone can talk about Viet politics but I don't pay attention to Dems/Liberals.
So you just confirmed everyone's thoughts. You are a self serving, close-minded, ego-maniac. Thanks for finally confirming it.
Anon. aka Bolsavik, I hope you will get to see the light one day and appreciate our freedom in this country.
No thanks to your pro- commie friends.
Not all, cra republican. Supervisor Janet Nguyen, who reprsents more constituents than any other Vietnamese American elected official in America, has endorsed Mimi Walters.
Bolsavik, Supe., who? Ask any Viet voters from central county.......
They only refer Janet as " Social security office lady from little Saigon"
Janet has NO respect from Viet voters due to her dysfunctional character. Her endorsement can ONLY HURT Mimi Walters in this race.
Mimi should remove Janet's name from the endorsement list.
Bolsavik...... allow me to break your Dems. heart!
The most respected elected Viet official is Assemblyman Van Tran and he has my utmost support.
Wrong,
Can Janet Nguyen-Bonikowski even speak Vietnamese, much less repreent the Viet community?
