SD33 Mailbox: Mimi Drops Ticket Bomb On Harry

Posted by: Jubal | 05/08/2008 2:33 PM

mailbox.jpgThis mailer from the Mimi Walters campaign came through the mail slot of Casa de Jubal today.
Readers may or may not know that each Anaheim City Council member is entitled to four tickets to every event at the city-owned Honda Arena (formerly known as The Pond). The tickets are in the city's suite at the popular arena.

The Walters campaign did a public records request for the number of tickets Sidhu took out (for himself or the use of others) during 2005-2007, which came out to 1,252.

Someone really thought it was a good idea to do a cover like that? One would think cooler heads would prevail.

FORMER ME-ME's SUPPORTER said:

Now pay attention here: "each Anaheim City Council member is entitled to four tickets to every event". The keyword here is 'ENTITLED'.

It is clear Me-Me Walters is frustrated, angry and lost... Too bad! Good for Harry Sidhu.

This is so dumb of Me-Me Walters to even bring it up. I guess she does not have anything to say to Harry Sidhu on taxes, illegal immigration, education and other important issues.

Poor Me-Me, you just lost many more votes of conservative republicans in Orange County.

Why said:

What's wrong with the cover?

redperegrine said:

Clownishly racist. Thanks for the garbage, Mimi. This is the sort of trash you'd expect from an anonymous IE.

Fullerton Conservative said:

This is one of the best hit pieces ever! A devestating attack. Harry may be finished in Anaheim when this is all over.

Rocket said:

Red P said it. Entitled to 4 not 5 or more. Sounds like they may have a "Fair Board" over in Anaheim.

Well Now I Guess We Know said:

I GUESS WE KNOW NOW WHAT THE CONSULTANTS WOULD DO IF THE CANDIDATE WAS BLACK. WHAT YEAR ARE WE IN AGAIN? FROM CALIFORNIA MAJORITY REPORT:

Who's behind the disgusting independent expenditure campaign designed to aid Mayor Heather Fargo in her race against challenger Kevin Johnson in the Sacramento's Mayor's Race? From the near-exact similarities of the server addresses, it looks like it's the same right-wing operative who's launched racist anti-immigration media campaigns, flopped in an attempt to hand over California's electoral votes to Republicans by splitting them, and hyped the "Rescue California" campaign to recall Gov. Gray Davis.

Gillard Blanning has a long history of sleaze campaigns against Democrats. But this appears to be the first time that Gillard has thrown in with a Democrat to try to knock off another Democrat.

The anti-Johnson campaign features grainy photographs of Johnson, an urban/graffiti-filled wall, and a faked telephone conversation. It's probably one of the most vile character attacks I've seen in ages -- and I've seen a lot in my years.

Last night, in the "debate" hosted by the Sacramento Bee and News10, Mayor Heather Fargo said with a straight face that she hadn't seen the website or mailpiece by Gillard. Which made her either a rival for Pinocchio in the truth-telling department or someone who has no clue about the campaign she's in. You be the judge.

In any case, she failed to repudiate the mailer when she had the opportunity. And that's troubling even her supporters.

Why said:

I don't get why it's racist. It's just Harry's face.

question said:

How does Harry get away with not reporting these tickets as income or gifts?

Because it's not reportable, that's why, checked with city said:

This is such a bunch of bunk. I just checked with the city after reading this. It's not reportable because it's not a gift. It's part of the contract for use of city-owned facilities. Call and check for yourself. Walters and her consultants must desperate.

Anonymous said:

Harry looks like "Monk" in this picture (to me)nothing racist about that. I did divide the tickets by 4 and came up with him having either attended or given away free tickets to 313 events at the Honda Center. I'd say that's excessive.

Anonymous said:

If Harry is using the tickets himself or giving them away to supporters, he should be reporting them as gifts. Anaheim's taxpayers deserve better.

The Captain said:

This is reminiscent of Dave Gilliard's racist attacks on Van Tran. Those worked out well, didn't they.

Mimi Supporter said:

What's racist about it?

Note to Captain said:

Captain-

Please, Mark Leyes? Not to take away from Van's victory but an empty pizza box could have beat Mark Leyes. Former Democrat who switched parties to get elected in Orange County?

Question for Mimi said:

Are we suppose to believe Harry attended the Women of Faith conference? On the city's dime, none the less?

Down with Harry said:

So, Harry's campaign response is that it isn't a reportable gift because the city own's the facility? A gift is a gift. An ethical member of the city council would have reported the gift. What a joke!

Spin, spin, spin said:

Get a grip Mimi-ites. There's nothing reportable about this red herring issue. Time to move on to the next spin.

Bad Idea said:

The phone lines are RED HOT tonight in the Indo American Community as it gets around the nation that Walters has taken a swipe at million of tax paying Americans that happen to be Hindu. The Ganesha is worshiped my many and Walters and her cross wearing friends better get used to it.

What is Next Dave said:

Gilliard neeeds to grow up, what is next ?- Harry riding an elephant past the Taj Mahal ?

Milk Man said:

I can't say i'm surprise, considering that Dave Gillard is running this race. He has a history of playing the race card against ethnic candidate.

Good job in trying to grow the party man. What's next Gillard? Are you going to put a turbin over Harry Sidhu's head?

The Bolsavik said:

Yeah, that's my first reaction too.

What's with the Indian motif?

Anonymous said:

I think you are all giving Dave good ideas for the next mailer...photoshop Harry with a turbin outside the Taj Mahal just off the 55 freeway! Good Stuff.

Hard hitting piece that meets the 10 second rule said:

Zenger - aka Redperegrine - you're a Norby partisan. You're his appointee on the county planning commission. Only Norby on the County Board of Supervisors has endorsed Sidhu. No surprise you'd back up Sidhu in this race.

This piece is really devastating. It will stand out in the minds of voters in the time it takes to go from the mailbox to the trash bin. That's why the Sidhu campaign is making such a fuss.

They know that John Q. Taxpayer won't make the distinction between "entitlements" and "gifts." Only professional political operatives make that distinction, and it's a silly one.

I'm sure the only phone lines lighting up right now are the ones at Anaheim City Hall with calls from constituents angry about this perk of Anaheim public office.

1,252 tickets! Really, that's a huge, absurd number. That gives Fabian "Louis Vuitton" Nunez a run for his money.

Midge said:

Personally, I love the Bollywood look of the (anti)Sidhu flyer. Except for the Pond ticket dig, it looks like a movie poster. Unintentionally hip.

The “be scared of foreigners” tactic intended by the Hindu-style background is insulting to this voter.

Sidhu's reserved seats are what's insulting! said:

Stop the perks! Stop the electioneering! 1,252 tickets! Harry Sidhu has been buying votes and support for years! Please, make it stop!

#1 I am a Mimi supporter.

#2 This is an honest question, for which I would appreciate an honest answer.

How is this racist? Please anyone explain it to me. Maybe I don't know enough about Indian culture to understand it or maybe it isn't racist at all. I honestly do not know. Please explain.

Wrong, genius (you figured out my top-secret identity, how did you break the code?): I haven't "backed up" Harry - until right now, I think.

That mailer was pure trash - replacing an image of Ganesha, or something similar, I suppose, with Harry's picture. To do what? To remind all those xenophobic Republican voters that Harry is an immigrant of Indian origin? Gratuitously, too, since any idiot can figure that out by his surname.

The content was lame, too. If Walters is so offended by Anaheim councilpersons getting free tickets then why doesn't she get off her backside and pass some legislation stopping the practice. She's in the legislature, right?

Whatever. There’s nothing racist about this piece, and even if there were, Harry would deserve it for going sexist from day one. In the very first hit of this race, he had a headless photo of a woman in a slutty cocktail dress holding a cosmo. Then he doctored photos of her holding wads of money for his commercial. If Mimi ever decides to go there, Harry will have been the one to open the door.
Oh, and by the way, to all the blubbering sensitivity police predicting helter-skelter over the alleged subliminal racism of Mimi putting Harry’s face on something: Harry Sidhu is Siekh not Hindu. I guess all Indians are the same to you (since more than one of you have used Hindu as a synonym for Indian-American and nobody has objected) which pretty much discredits your self-righteousness on this matter.

Anonymous said:

How strange this would come up, thanks Mimi you have just showed OC another giving side of Harry, I know for a fact Harry donated 90% if not all tickets he is allowed to school events and charities and his generousity to his community never ends.

blog junkie said:

Anon 12:02,

It may be true that Harry donate 90% of the tickets, but I don't know that to be true. Either way he accepted 1,252 tickets which he was entitled to and I dont know if they needed to be reported or not (nice perk by the way).

I also know that Mimi missed 123 votes out of 6,000.

So the leaving out of "the rest of the story" as Paul Harvey would have said goes both ways.

Tit-for-tat my friend.

Be consistent said:

Is this the same Reperegrine who was so outraged by the OC Fair Board members ticket giveaways? Harry outdoes them by orders of magnitude, and you've got no problem with it?

Just the facts said:

Harry Sidhu has been infinitely generous in seeking out local charitable organizations to which he has donated countless City event tickets. Local schools have benefitted from the tickets and I know of community fundraisers, such as one where money was raised for a local 6 year old with cancer and insurmountable medical bills, where Harry has gone out of his way to donate the City's tickets rather than use them for his own personal use (which he is perfectly entitled to do, by the way). Harry's community concern and generosity is exceptional. I'm glad Mimi Walters brought this up: it's one more reason we know we have a wonderful State Senate candidate in Harry Sidhu!!

I think that this a very sad thing that you are all doing to a man that is a very well known person with the biggest heart. His goals are for are best interest of us and you are picking him apart. GET a better life and be more productive with your self , use your energy on something that is more needed not making up mean lies on a GREAT human being.

Thank you

My gosh, how awful...I was just made aware of the negative campaign today. Same on Mimi Walters for allowing such an ad when especially it's not true. Harry Sidhu, like the other City Council Members donates the great majority of them to various non-profit organizations in the City of Anaheim.

Why are you scared of the truth? Do you feel like you are losing this race? Very disappointing coming from a republican, you have lost my vote today.

Seriously, you guys, MiMi has been running a totally high-class, positive campaign for weeks against Harry's whiny sniping. She finally brings out something unpleasant about Harry and now people cry foul?!?! This is unbelievable! Mimi's record is incredible and one all of us who call ourselves conservative Republicans can be proud of. Let's keep ourselves focused on what really matters and recognize that Harry's tactics are not anything we can be proud of.

Michele Gabbard said:

This kind of politics makes me crazy!! Everyone that knows Harry Sidhu and his family knows that Harry is continually donating his tickets to deserving charities. I am the fundraising chairperson for one of the elementary schools in Anaheim and the Sidhu family have continually supported our school by donating tickets that we then raffle or auction off to pay for the things at school that the State can no longer pay for. In addition to that, I have been part of fundraising events for children with cancer and the Sidhu's have not only donated tickets to be auctioned off to help pay for medical bills for this family but also opened their home to have the event. I have never in the past donated to a campaign however, after seeing this kind of stuff going on I am going to get everyone I know to donate to Harry's campaign to help insure that the right person wins this campaign. Shame on you for wasting the time of voters on such foolishness.

Since when does giving away the property of the taxpayers of the City of Anaheim constitute personal greatness? I say kudos to the City of Anaheim for helping out with ticket donations to worthwhile causes, but how does that make Mr. Sidhu St. Harry?

Harry has been giving the taxpayers' tickets away! said:

Even Harry Sidhu's supporters agree: he has given tickets away as "charity."

Well, let me explain this to you: he shouldn't have been doing that. They aren't his tickets and he doesn't deserve the goodwill he's getting in return for the tickets he's given. It's irrational to credit Sidhu with generosity for tickets he never purchased, himself. Those are the taxpayers' tickets!

Tickets = pork. 1,252 tickets is a heck of a lot of pork!

Playing the victim said:

Harry Sidhu isn't Hindu. This piece isn't racist. End of story.

Well are tax money is going to something that I Personally support....

People that need help and children that benefit from all the donations. instead of pointing fingers at other people he is helping them. THAT ALL UNDER GREATNESS. He GETS it.

Tickets are pork. If he really cared about the children he should have donated to them with money from his own pocket.

Harry Sidhu is just another porker in elected office.

Denise Williams said:

Harry has donated many tickets to fundraising. I personally know that he has donated tickets for raffles to raise money for Anaheim schools. Although I have never personally met Harry, I do know he is very generous when it comes to helping those in need. The Sidhu family generously planned a fundraiser and donated the use of their home to hold a fundraiser for a local Anaheim child suffering from cancer. I don't know for certain, but I beleive tickets were donated for that event as well.

Teacher Friend said:

What a terrible piece of propaganda. I have known the family for around two years now and have worked with their children in the education field. They have donated tickets to me very often being that I am an employee in Anaheim, live in Anaheim, and am a teacher in OUSD. This family hosted an event at thier home for a child with cancer personally donating many items. I am grateful to them for offerering me their tickets to events that Mr. Sidhu has earned by being a city council member. It is something that city members are allowed to do, and that family donates the tickets to people like me who are city employees (as a teacher) and that is wrong? I wish more people out there in the government would be as gracious and hospitable as the Sidhu's.

tina hammond said:

As I sit here and read through this blog I have nothing but utter disgust. I always knew politics can get dirty but this is ridiculous. You keep mentioning these tickets and how Harry obtained them and how it was unappropriate. Let me just tell you my opinion on the matter. Every job has its perks and Harry's happens to have the perks of these tickets which means not only Harry received these tickets but everyone on this board, and the key word is A JOB PERK. So get off this ridiculous attack and spend your time doing positive things for the people you so desperately want to keep informed. I don't see Harry spending his valuable time in this disgusting trash. Mimi you just showed your true side when you allowed your pet to start this kind of trash. You have lost respect, and gained nothing but direspect from a lot of people. GOOD MOVE!

redperegrine said:

"Is this the same Reperegrine who was so outraged by the OC Fair Board members ticket giveaways? Harry outdoes them by orders of magnitude, and you've got no problem with it?"

Yes, it is the same redperegrine. As Jubal pointed out those tickets are for use of seats in the City's suite - not for use by the general public. Apparently, the arrangement was made by the City and the private operator. At the Fair general admission seats are used; if you recall, my "outrage" was directed principally at the amount of catering cost since that was the topic of the post.

Anonymous at 10:50, you scribbled this masterpiece:

"Oh, and by the way, to all the blubbering sensitivity police predicting helter-skelter over the alleged subliminal racism of Mimi putting Harry’s face on something: Harry Sidhu is Siekh not Hindu. I guess all Indians are the same to you (since more than one of you have used Hindu as a synonym for Indian-American and nobody has objected) which pretty much discredits your self-righteousness on this matter"

All Indians are certainly the same to the bigot who cooked up this mailer. Playing on ethnic prejudice of legal immigrants during this era of political grandstanding over illegals is pretty low (although somehow I suspect the bar is about to be dropped).

Anaheim Resident said:

Is this the only way that MIMI thinks she is going to win is by dragging down Harry? Come on it's Harry's choice what he decides to do with the tickets that are given to him as part of the council. Are we critizing someone for doing something chartible? Who cares if he keeps the tickets or donates them? There are more pressing issues like our schools, taxes and fuel prices. Leave Harry alone! Why drag someone down for trying to help others!?!?!
Harry is a generous and gracious individual!!!

Note to Harry Fans said:

He donates the tickets so you will give him kudos for the donation. Duh!

Does he give a disclaimer that "hey--i get these tickets for free and so don't think that I am really dipping down into my own pocket to help"? Of course not! Please do not claim that Harry is some big hearted philanthropist because he gives something he gets for free (and doesn’t report it) to, i am sure, well deserving charities. Voters are too smart for that.

Re NOTE TO HARRY FANS COMMENT said:

I guess it's true that people can post anything on a blog without facts to back it up. As a member and volunteer of numerous nonprofit charitable organizations in Orange County such as the Boys and Girls Clubs, Orange County Symphony, YMCA, Paint Your Heart Out, etc., etc., YES Harry, and every other Anaheim City Council Member for that matter including Mayor Pringle, has always fully informed the nonprofit charitable organizations of the nature of the donation. We all know the truth and it's not what you and others are saying. This is so sad. Really.

Anonymous said:

The Sidhu family attends the same school as my kids and they have always been very generous donating tickets to our school and other community events. We stand behing him.

Leslie A said:

Dear Mimi and all of you, nothing better to do than try to slander someone's reputation, Mimi followers,
You must be so proud of yourself, finding this terribly awful thing that Harry has done. I mean really, giving away tickets to charitable events, what a horrible man! Oh, that's right, they're not his, they belong to the City. Well, DUH... the City decided that the way they were going to use their tickets was as a PERK to their council members for their dedication and commitment to the community. So, I guess it's now the City of Anaheim that is at fault here for giving their employees a bonus. Take it up with the City, run a clean race, and get over the fact that you're going to lose to Harry. If it were me, I would rather lose to him with the dignity of knowing that I didn't have to crawl around in the dirt trying to find a way to beat him. Harry's a great man,he has done nothing wrong, and he should be applauded for his kindness.
You might have something to talk about if Harry only gave HIS tickets away to Republicans. Guess what... He doesn't, so you don't! He is not charitable to gain political favor, he is charitable because it's in his heart. THAT'S THE KIND OF STATE SENATOR I WANT. THAT'S THE KIND OF STATE SENATOR WE NEED. MY VOTE'S FOR YOU HARRY.

Leslie A,

You say that you want a clean race, have you looked at Harry's campaign? He started slinging the mud, so now he has to take it too.

I bet what you say is true and Harry is a nice guy. I hope that after the election we can all be friends again and fight the real enemy, Fabian Nunez and the Funky Bunch!

Let's be real said:

Harry donates the vast majority of those tickets to local charities, nonprofits, and schools.

Michele Gabbard said:

This seems ridiculous. Shouldn't we be focusing on stuff that really matters. These tickets are a job perk for being a city council member. Harry did not ask for them and rarely if ever uses them for himself. I have been in the city council suite and most of the tickets go unused and wasted. I would much rather see the council members donate them to charity than completely waste them. Are we now going to require all council members everywhere to report all job perks and for that matter if a company has a suite and employee's use it should they have to report that as well. Be serious people - this means nothing and should not take up space and time when so many important things need to be dealt with. Harry is a great man and he has never implied that it was a big deal for him to share these tickets. I know for a fact he has donated them to many charities and does not want to be recognized or noticed for it nor have the charities been supporters of Harry. Let's focus on the real issues - please.

GRAND OLD PARODY said:

I just got this piece in the mail, handed it to my wife, and asked, "What do you think of this?" She replied, "They're trying to make him look like a crazy middle easterner."

This piece screams "appeal to racial stereotypes and bigotry" (when Walters had a perfectly good hit piece without the appeal to racism - stupid).

Sidhu should take it to some anti-defamation organization and have them demand an apology of Walters. He should make her out to be thie bigot that this piece makes her appear to be.

Anonymous said:

I totally agree with previous poster. I think Mimi Walters staff took a color photo of Harry Sidhu from his website at http://joinharry.com/ and then they turned it into black and white and darkened the photo, so it looks like he has real dark skin.

Then they placed an orange image on the background that screams 'beware of foreigners!'

On top of that they tried to make him look bad because he used the hockey tickets that are reserved for him as a city councilmember. I still do not understand which part of giving away to charities the tickets that would be wasted if not used supposed to make Harry Sidhu look bad. It actually proves us that he is a very kind person who cares about our community.

Such tactics make me very upset, because they bring a message that Mimi Walters is a better candidate because her opponent has darker skin and from another country.

As far as I heard, Harry Sidhu is a kind, generous, respected and honorable gentlemen, a conservative republican who has a track record to prove it.

Wow! said:

This may be the most racist mail piece I have ever seen. Harry is sticking to the issues, be it positive or negative. This is just unacceptable, I used to like both Harry and Mimi, but Mimi should be ashamed.
