SD33 Mailbox: CRA Drops An IE Cluster Bomb On Harry Sidhu

Posted by: Jubal | 05/29/2008 2:24 PM

It was a heavy political mail day at Casa de Jubal.

The postman delivered eight different pieces of political mail: AD60 mailers, a slate, the CRA newspaper and absolutely enormous mail piece from the Harry Sidhu for Senate campaign. It's twice as big as my scanner, but fortunately Martin Wisckol has a PDF link over at Total Buzz.

The one that grabbed my attention, though, was this negative independent expenditure from the California Republican Assembly:

cra_hit_on_harry 002.jpgcra_hit_on_harry 001.jpg

Former Senator Ross Johnson had a term for a mailer like this, but decorum prohibits me from employing it here. I don't know who the consultant is, but it has Bieber Communications written all over it.

The CRA also dropped a positive mailer supporting Sidhu's opponent, Assemblywoman Mimi Walters:

cra endorse mimi 002.jpgcra endorse mimi 001.jpg

Frankly, I think harry is heading for a real thumping on Tuesday -- even if he hadn't forsworn negative campaigning.

The first piece ("The Trouble With Harry") is devastating! Wow.

Meddlesome Nobody said:

Ouch! That first one is just a peachy.

Andy Favor said:

This is just sad. No substantive debate on the issues. We need a voucher program. We need California to conform to federal HSA law (I say expande it, that is another topic) and we need to let California workers have private Social Security accounts.

Down with Harry said:

Andy- it is a campaign...sadley voters don't care about a "substantive debate". They don't win elections.

Question for Jubal said:

If Bieber printed it, wouldn't it have "BC" on the mailer? This one has CMM.

So Much For The "Conscience" Of The Republican Party said:

Not a beautiful day in the neighborhood for the CRA.

Question:

Good point. I hadn't looked at that.

GRAND OLD PARODY said:

I'm with Andy on this one.

The CRA went totally over the top, and made an ugly campaign even uglier.

Real Nice, CRA.

GRAND OLD PARODY said:

I was just reviewing CRA's website and trying to square this ugly attack with their stated principles.

I'm just trying to figure out which part of Judeo-Christian ethic and Holy Scriptures this mean-spirited attack came from.

It's about issues and principles said:

The first mailer is about both issues and principles. Sidhu has none. Don't blame the CRA for expressing that fact in a graphic and impactful way.

Grand Old Parody Says It Best said:

The CRA mailer expresses nothing more than ugly, over-the-top tactics.

harry supporter said:

this mailer is such b.s., Harry a liberal? yeah right! Mimi doesn't know anything better to come up with, so lame!!!!

Mimi didn't produce this piece, the California Republican Assembly did said:

The CRA knows who's conservative better than any other organization in the state. If they say Sidhu is a liberal, he's a liberal.

Publius said:

Does ANYBODY proofread these things?
In Harry's super-oversized "cheap" mailer, the bold text on the back refers to the "cleaver" ways his opponent has alluded to his ethnicity.
Spell check does not equal proofreading.

Laguna Niguel family said:

Walters and CRA does not have to show their real faces with their ugly hit mailers. We already know who they are and what they stand for. I want to see real changes in our government.

I am going to vote for Harry Sidhu and so is my family.

GRAND OLD PARODY said:

CRA show their faces? I think they wear hoods.

Did anyone else notice that the "union boss" is latino? Another subtle appeal to racial bigotry. (Walters "lucky ticket" piece also featured an appeal to racial bigotry.)

You know, the KKK, like the CRA, also claims to uphold Christian principles.

GRAND OLD PARODY said:

I am still fuming over the CRA's patent appeal to bigotry.

The CRA deliberately chose a picture of a latino gangmember rather than the stereotypical union boss - a white male. It was deliberate and calculated.

Now, what does CRA stand for again?

Closet Racists Association?
Crypto Racists Anonymous?

The CRA has lived down to the worst liberal stereotype of the GOP as white racists.

What's wrong, CRA? Harry getting too "uppity" for you?

The Word said:

I would invite the CRA to review their Holy Scriptures:

"Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep, but are really wolves that will tear you apart. You can detect them by the way they act, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit." Matt 7:15-16

If Harry had just kept to the issues and not started calling Mimi, an actual Conservative, a liberal, then a justly outraged CRA would not have felt the need to set the record straight so bluntly. Harry started this war and then, as usual, his supporters cry foul.

A Latino Republican said:

I'm a Latino Republican and I can't for the life of me see what "Grand Old Parody" is seeing.

I don't think the "union boss" is Latino looking. I didn't see that when I first read it over and I still don't see that, even upon closer inspection. The only thing I see in the "union boss" picture is a tattooed thug.

"Grand Old Parody," you are a race-obsessed fool. Connecting Latinos with thugs is your own little subconscious racism surfacing and no one else's. Stop blaming the CRA, an organization I have proudly belonged to without fear or outrage for many years, for your own issues.

The mailer was effective and powerful. I am pleased the CRA has decided to once again serve what will prove to be a decisive role in the 33rd SD election.

GRAND OLD PARODY said:

The fact that you deny that the picture looks latino is either willful blindness or an outright lie, most likely the latter. Given that lie, it suggests that you are not latino, at all.

I've had several people look at this, including latinos, and they agree with me.

Anonymous said:

Grand Old Parody - Since you feel comfortable calling another poster a liar, one has to wonder about the veracity of your own statements. So exactly how many people did you actually poll on the latino-ness of the pictured union leader? How many Latinos and how many non-Latinos?

GRAND OLD PARODY said:

I had 2 latinos and 3 whites agree (forwarded link by email and asked about ethnicity of person in picture).

As for lying on this site, this site is a forum for political hacks to masquerade as one thing or another. And several (or one, who knows?) have commented on how deception is part of their game. (And if I see the expression, "I'm shocked! Shocked!" again, I'll puke.) So, would someone get on and claim to be latino who isn't? Of course, they would.

Bottom line - CRA played the race card, here. And I am outraged and disgusted. They knew exactly what they were doing.

You "inside baseball" people have no idea how disgusted the base is with your candidates and your foul antics. But, it's the only game you know.

Bush and the Republican Congress have many of us thoroughly sick of the GOP, and antics like the sanctimonious CRA's will only drive more from the party. (I am completely embarrassed by their mailer. I have defended the GOP in many arguments against claims that we are racist. I feel like Walters and the CRA have made a fool of us.)

I'm done with this, maybe with the GOP. I should probably switch parties to Libertarian and vote for Andy Favor (a good man).

A Latino Republican said:

"Grand Old Parody" -

In fact, I am a proud conservative Latino Republican and I am becoming increasingly offended by your assertions - first regarding the mailer and now regarding my ethnic background.

I sincerely doubt you presented the mailer to anyone, much less presented it to anyone in an objective fashion.

You hate the Republican Party - as evidenced by your monicker - especially the conservative members of the Republican Party. That's fine. You fit right in with Harry Sidhu's supporters: labor union bosses and militant homosexuals.

No Kool Aid Drinker said:

Parody has left the building.

I think CRA's name should be changed to "Closet Racists Association". The second name is good too but the first one is better.

I remember someone here already called Walters KKK, because of her racist attacks on Sidhu, but the post was deleted. I don't know why. If it offended someone here - so what... a lot of posts here do. To me it was only a proof that the poster actually hit the target, because people usually get offended by truth.

Concerning who started and who did not: as far as I remember Walters started it with attacking Sidhu on Prop 98.

Anyhow, the title here should state "CRA Drops Another Racist Bomb On Sidhu - Apparently"

Sidhu started the negative attacks said:

Harry Sidhu attacked Mimi Walters for almost a week with negative mail before Walters retaliated. Go back and read the OC Blog posts on this race.

Associating Walters and the KKK is lunacy and I am glad if it was deleted/removed. The race-obsessed Sidhu supporters on here better get ready to tender their apologies to Assemblywoman Walters next Wednesday when all the votes have been counted and she's won.

HARRY WINS said:

I'm totally with ya! Truth hurts, huh? Shame on racists. There is no room for them in hour society any more. Harry Sidhu looks like a much better candidate and I'm sure he will be more honest and effective senator. I hope Harry is going to win next week.

Harry Sidhu lied to his gay supporters said:

Shame on Harry Sidhu for organizing a fundraiser with the gay community, knowing full well their sexual orientation, and then publicly declaring he opposes and will oppose them! What does he believe?

What a crook!

Isms said:

The only "ism" found in this race is the sexism Harry Sidhu has been peddling both in the mailbox and on tv. He's carried out a blatantly sexist campaign against conservative Assemblywoman Mimi Walters and then says he won't go negative. He's no different than anybody else.

Missy said:

Another version of this mailer was sent to the Viets in the district. It says "Communists support Sidhu."

All it really means is that "Stupid People support Walters."

Gimme A Break said:

Mimi-ites still trying to spin the good old spinning wheel as the days tick down. Good for a laugh.

Andy Favor said:

OK, Harry just lost the one Favor family vote up for grabs. I see in his mailer the following quote: "Children should be worrying about the next math exam, not gangs and drugs in their hallways."

The only way to get rid of the gangs and drugs in the hallways is to take the drug trade out of the black market. But Harry has such a refer madness he won't even support Chuck DeVore's Industrial Hemp bill much less a decriminalization of drugs and a move towards licensed distribution.

You lost a vote Harry. The quote strikes me as disingenuous and blatant dishonesty. Nothing can get our vote back now.

Anonymous said:

Oh what a bull... You've been writing for her the whole time here. Just like you Mimi has been dishonest and misleading the whole campaign. Orange County Grand Jury had to issue a special press release to announce it. This even makes her supporters look dumb if they still continue hanging around the woman.
My family is voting for Harry Sidhu.

Anonymous said:

Thanks for the CRA making a stand against these liberals...They also, mailed an accurate piece on Kim Tran's opponent in the 76th AD. During his entire 2006 campaign he portrayed himself as a grandfather and active church member. He then lied during his 2006 appearance on Roger Hedgecock's show about his support for gay marraige. Now the CRA has outed him as both a Log Cabin Republican and gay marriage supporter in a mass mailer. I almost forgot, he also sided with the ACLU to exclude the Boy SCouts from Balboa Park because they discriminated against gays and athiests. I bet he will also complain the mailer is unfairly characterizing him as a liberal.

God Bless the CRA

What a crock said:

This CRA mailer doesn't meet the smell test.

What smell test is that? said:

This mailer is POWERFUL. No question. Hence the protestations of the Sidhu camp.

Something smells, but its not the CRA.
