Hoa's Hinky Campaign Report Countdown: Day 36
Posted by: Jubal | 05/15/2008 9:32 AM
Over at TheLiberalOC.com, Chris Prevatt writes:Tick, tock, tick, tock; the accountability clock is ticking. Word on the street is there are some members of the Democratic Party of Orange County who will ask the Party Central Committee to reconsider its endorsement last month of Hoa Van Tran if amendments to his campaign finance reports are not filed with the Registrar of Voters by the next meeting on Monday, May 19th at 7 pm.You can read the rest of Chris's post here -- as well as an incredibly long string of comments (72 as of this posting), dominated by a back-and-forth between Chris and fellow LiberalOC blogger Sean Mill. The latter furiously throws out conspiracy chaff and red herrings in an vain effort to deflect attention from the glaring reality that Hoa Van Tran has A) failed to report thousands of dollars in expenditures, B) refuses to acknowledge that failure and C)) has failed to remedy those violations.
We'll have to wait till then to see what if anything happens, but the accountability clock is ticking. This is getting as stupid as Janet Nguyen not disclosing the names of the donors to her "illegal" legal defense fund last year.
I checked with the OC Registrar of Voters. They sent Hoa a letter on May 8 (the same day I filed a complaint with the District Attorney and Shirley Grindle filed one with the Attorney general) notifying him that he had failed to report his $1,430.42 filing fee and $5,965 candidate statement fee.
The ROV further notified him he must file an amendment by May 18 (since that falls on a Sunday, he has until COB May 19). They even enclosed a Form 460 for his convenience, and phone numbers too call if he had any questions.
So far, the Registrar of Voters has had no response from Hoa or his campaign.
And this guy wants to be a county Supervisor? If Hoa is this cavalier about complying with the law, he deserves to have a complaint filed with the state bar association.
Lastly, I share Chris Prevatt's amazement at the mainstream media's somnolent attitude toward this issue. When Sup. Janet Nguyen refused to disclose the donors to her illegal legal defense fund, the OC Register and Los Angeles Times -- along with this blog and TheLiberalOC.com -- were all over it.
Total Buzz, OC Blog and LiberalOC.com conducted a "countup" and four days into it Sup. Nguyen acted to bring her campaign into compliance.
OC Blog put Hoa's violations into the public realm 25 days ago, and during that time only OC Blog and LiberalOC.com have been banging away at the violations. Local MSM coverage has been limited to three Total Buzz blog posts withing the past week.

May 18 is a Sunday. So that would actually mean by tomorrow Friday May 16. Or maybe Saturday if they accept postmarks.
Correct. I forgot to mention that in the post.
Jubal since you want fair and accurate reporting perhaps you can tell us how you happened to come in possesion of material that was downloaded from Hoa's campaign computers. Pictures you have posted on this site were downloaded directly from computers belonging to Hoa's campaign. How did you get them?
I am sure once legal action is taken and depositions begin we will find out who is actually behind this smear campaign.
Sean, how bout you kick rocks and go back to your Padron Edgardo
A blogger demanding that another blogger reveal his source, Sean? Tsk-tsk.
Perhaps we should find posts by you based on confidential sources, demand that you reveal those sources, and watch you twist logic into a pretzel explaining why confidentiality applies only to you.
The courts have already affirmed bloggers don't have to reveal sources, so save the legal threats.
Have the courts ruled that you don't have to reveal how you came in possession of stolen property?
Sean why are you being such a butthead about this? You were FIRST in line regarding Janets failure to fix her reports....which by the way someone (a donor) outed her...so why the double standard? If he f-d up the report - fix it...no biggie...just do it, dont you agree?
Flowerszzz,
I don't believe I ever wrote anything regarding Janet and those reports. My point is that it doesn't matter whether or not Hoa's reports are corrected or not, these folks will still pile on him. I have spoken to Hoa's campaign and any errors, if they exist, will be corrected by the deadline given.
I believe that everyone should follow the law, Hoa included. However the bigger story here is why are so many "loyal" Democrats feeding info to a Republican partisan like Matt Cunningham in an effort to derail Hoa? Clearly somebody wants to keep their hands clean and let the "big bad Reeps" be the heavy.
Matt was provided with photos that were downloaded by a mole/rat from computers belonging to Hoa. Why would these people do this if they weren't trying to smear Hoa and his campaign?
Sean:
First, you would have to prove it is stolen property. All you've done is huff and puff. And for a guy who just relays what he hears, you certainly seem close to what's being claimed within the Hoa Van Tran campaign.
Care to reveal your sources? Or does that only apply to people other than yourself.
Then again, you're the same guy who doesn't recognize that Hoa has failed to report several thousand dollars in expenditures.
But keep up the Pedroza-esque spin diversions!
Matt,
I am not passing along information that was stolen from a campaign. The source regarding the pictures on Hoa's computers is myself. I saw them there with my own two eyes. The only way you could have gotten those pictures is if a rat/mole downloaded them and gave them to you.
I haven't failed to recognize a thing. I am simply willing to wait until everything washes out before I start jumping up and down and acting as if there has been some sort of major criminal act.
The fact that you and Prevatt seem to be working hand-in-hand on this leads me to be rather suspicious as to who is really behind this. Who was it that directed the rat/mole, or in your words the source, to you?
I find it hard to believe that a so-called "loyal" Democrat would have run to a partisan Republican such as yourself unless they were coaxed there by somebody else. Even Helen Keller could have seen that.
Sean,
Your hypocrisy is sickening. First you chastise any of us who call the gangsters in Hoa's office gangsters instead of "Urban Latino Youth" and then you go and make a dispicable blind joke about Helen Keller?
The double standard you set is absolutely appalling and quite sickening. For a bleeding heart liberal like your self to make fun and the expense of the blind community is shameful.
The source regarding the pictures on Hoa's computers is myself. I saw them there with my own two eyes.
So any pictures on your home computer ipso facto belong to you? Or anytime you forward a picture that was sent to you, or you then guilty of receiving stolen goods?
Sean, you are making a valiant effort to shift the discussion away from your guy's refusal to abide by county campaign law, but that is what you are doing.
The notion that how I got some pictures is more important then a would-be supervisor refusing to comply with county campaign law is absurd.
I look forward to hearing you change sing a different tune if you are ever called upon to reveal a source.
I am simply willing to wait until everything washes out before I start jumping up and down and acting as if there has been some sort of major criminal act.
"Wash out"? That's laughable. Let's start with a easy one, Sean. How about those two checks Hoa wrote to the Registrar of Voters for candidate statement and filing fees, totaling about $7,400 during the Jan. 1 - March 17 reporting period. Does that have to "wash out"? I posted about that almost a month ago. Hoa could have fixed that particular one with an amendment that day.
He hasn't.
Can you provide a single, solitary, believable reason why he hasn't?
Instead of going after the people who have pointed out the wrong-doing, why don't you have your guy to clean up his act annd comply with the law?
