Harry Sidhu: "El Pollo Cheapo?!?!"
Posted by: Agent 99 | 05/29/2008 10:59 AM
Folks - I am not making this up. This is not from theonion.com. Harry Sidhu just put out a mail piece that says:
Why is he playing into Indian stereotypes of frugality? I don't know what kind of polling information Duane and Jen have at Coronado Communications, but apparently making fun of Sidhu's spending habits must be doing better than illegal immigration and taxes in the 33rd State Senate District.
I have a feeling that these colloquial/wordy mail pieces compounded with politically irrelevant local elected official endorsements (see former Anaheim Sesquicentennial Commissioner) will seal Sidhu's casket for the State Senate race.
"I'm just like you but, maybe a little cheaper." [sic]

You fixed the grammatical error in his quote, but included the "[sic]" anyway?
"I'm just like you, but maybe a little more illiterate."
Too funny!
"Don't tell me...." When you've got to get so spun-out over a "comma" there must be some real "meat" to this Sidhu mailer. Sure enough there is. "Sorry about that 99." This Sidhu mailer is "SMART," funny, tells it like it is, and lists strong endorsements that Agent 99 seems to want to totally ignore. GET SMART and read it and weep, 99.
Because I've got nothing better to do at the moment, I ran the sentence that a few here are carping about through my Word Spelling & Grammar check, and it came back with an "OK" for the sentence as shown in the Sidhu mailer: "I’m just like you but, maybe a little cheaper." If it's good enough for Microsoft, it's good enough for me. Methinks that Sidhu hit the mark with this mailer, and he has a few spinning in its wake.
I'm still trying to find a point of contact for the North Orange County and South Orange County chapters of the California Congress of Republicans. I'm also trying to find a meeting time and place.
I'm starting to think they exist only to serve as a fake endorsement for Coronado Communications candidates.
I think it's funny that now the Sidhu campaign is trying to reinvent the English language.
Microsoft isn't the be-all end-all of spelling or grammar. That's just silly. Word makes mistakes all the time. "but," is incorrect grammar. No spinning there.
I don't have a problem with this flyer at all. Tom McClintock used his frugality. "Tom McClintock, he is tighter than a bull frog's behind.”
What I do have a problem with is that Harry will not pledge to back Chuck DeVore's Industrial Hemp bill. Tom McClintock was the only Republican in the state Senate to back the bill and now with any luck he will be in the US Congress.
Harry, the Favor family has one Republican vote up for grabs. All it takes is an unequivocal pledge to support the Hemp Bill and it is all yours. We already know that Mimi Walters would rather die than support freedom to farm for California farmers.

73rd Assembly District Candidate
So Harry plays the race card. Interesting.
You are shocked that Harry and/or his team have butchered the English language? Have you heard him speak? For all the money he has made in America, he needs to drop a few dollars on speech therapy. Despite being on one of the most intelligent men in the County, he sadly comes across as ignorant, because he cannot communicate effectively. One would hope that at least his handlers could review the written pieces first.
Anaheim Voter,
Seriously not cool!
Actually, I think it's brilliant... unless you're a member of an ethnic group stereotyped as cheap. If Harry were white I think the message would be bit less convoluted in tone. In the end though, any candidate that can prove that they will be fiscally efficient is eligible for my vote.
As far as the comma, I'd have put it after 'you' instead of 'but' although this is a potato/potatoe thing. Thanks a lot Dan Quayle! Murphy Brown 2012!

TO: Anaheim Voter and everyone else making a big deal out of nothing,
Wow! have you never seen a grammatical error before??? you act like this is the biggest thing to hit th O.C.!! You're seriously judging someone based on a misplaced comma?? come on!!
Wow- a big deal about nothing. Perhaps get educated about old and winning campaigns. The writer above was right- this is a poor imitation of McClintock's winning "Cousin Angus" and "Cheap Tom" ads that extol his personal fiscal conservatism. Which is, last I remember, something Republicans like.
It's useful to remember that McClintock also lost all three of his statewide general elections -- so I'm not sure how effective that ad theme ultimately was.
