Janet Nguyen's Class Act at the Central Committee

Posted by: Lady Fingers | 04/22/2008 12:36 PM

Last evening renewed my faith in the process of endorsements, but more than that, it renewed my faith in the fact that most of the time people do the right thing.  Attending the OC Republican Central Committee meeting 4/21 was possibly the highlight of my week.  Not being on the Central Committee and not being an alternate; I get to sit in the back and watch the power players and the spectators (like myself).

I entered the crowded room and took a seat in the back.  I started reading what was left on the chairs - campaign brochures, and other materials....including the now infamous Paul Lucas (Democrat) letter which attempted one last swipe at Janet Nguyen's possibilities of getting that endorsement.  When Scott Baugh opened the meeting, after the invocation and flag salute, some housekeeping tidbits and then lifted the Lucas letter high and told of what it said. He said this was the kind of dirty politics that had no place at the Central Committee, and he went on to relate a conversation he had personally with Paul Lucas when this rumor first came to light... Paul Lucas had told Scott that Janet had NOT given him any information that could damage anyone's campaign. He had a long conversation with Paul and prodded deeply to see if he could flesh anything out, but there was nothing. Party Chairman Scott Baugh then strongly spoke of his endorsement of Janet Nguyen. He indicated she had followed every Republican tenant since her election to office, and there was no reason not to endorse her. When the vote was called for the endorsement of Janet Nguyen, the usual protocol (for those who don't attend these events) is for three speakers to speak in favor of the motion and three to speak against the motion. The speakers, all believing strongly in their own positions, one at a time took the podium and stated their cases.

Not surprisingly, Assemblyman Van Tran had flown down from Sacramento to speak against the endorsement of Janet Nguyen. He waited until he would be the third and last speaker against the endorsement. He told the crowd that not one other Vietnamese elected official had endorsed Janet. He went on without personally attacking her but stated there were reasons for this that he would not go into (I'd bet he was pretty sure everyone in that room had heard, read and been informed in some way of the disapproval he has for Janet Nguyen). He reiterated that he was the highest ranking elected member in the room (which I thought was unnecessary to remind people of). He said no one should be endorsed because there were two viable candidates, both Republicans in this race. He then (quite surprisingly given the recent history) said that if Janet was elected in June or November that "we" (as a community, speaking of the Viets) will get behind her and support her. I wholeheartedly hope that he keeps his word and resolves the split that his "community" has brought to this race, this district, the party, and the people in the district.

Surprisingly he asked Janet to join him on the stage. She was reluctant...and I don't blame her for what she has gone through in the past months. When he said if she won "we" will get behind her and support her...then Janet approached the stage and went up and they shook hands. Hurrah! But apparently not enough for the detractors who have been posting on the RED COUNTY blog today. Apparently they don't plan on supporting her if she wins. So one wonders if Assemblyman Van Tran will still have the persuasive powers over the "we" that he spoke of to gain their support for Janet.

I though she handled this situation with grace and style, and I think she was genuine in her acceptance of his word, that he/"we" would support her.

Motions were made to have a secret ballot, other motions were made to have a roll call vote. In the end the roll call vote had the approval and it moved forward with a very favorable endorsement of Janet Nguyen...meaning instead of the 2/3's she received a 75% approval.

It would be refreshing to see the Viet community working as a whole with the Republican Party.  But for the Viet Community to expect the party to pull an endorsement because they don't like the incumbent candidate was expecting something a little unrealistic. Even while just unrealistic it was a factionated effort by a group within the party, and the party itself rarely will accommodate such division.

Thanks to Art Pedroza, Janet received her hard fought endorsement with the strong protests from all Viet republican community members................

All Viet community leaders are supporting Dina Nguyen and you can see them attending all of Dina's campaigning trails.

Funny. I didn't see Art Pedroza there last night. Is Cra Republican really suggesting that 75% of the GOP Central Committee answers to a controversial (I'm being polite) non-Republican (or ex-Republican)? Come on. Janet worked hard for the endorsement and got it. It seems time for Janet's critics to get the message that their petty charges are not gaining any traction with mainstream Republicans in Orange County.

And let me add to Slice's comments....not only did I not see Art P there last night (not that I'd actually know what he looks like because I've never seen him personally) But, the only Viet Strongly protesting anything last night was Van Tran, and he got voted down....

Republicans,

Go ahead and fight among yourselves while the democrats will unite and win more seats this coming November election.

Lady Fingers: FYI: With Janet as Supervisor, there will never be unity among Republicans across the party line.

i ditto the last post whether you or the central committee like or not with janet at the helm there will be no unity. mr van tran has done a lot for the party and this is what he got: a stamp of the party and an unethical candidate.

Anonymous said:

Now look you guys, Van Tran said you guys would unite behind Janet when she wins. Are you saying that you will not support Van Tran?

Anonymous said:

Anon.2:24, ask Janet about how Art looks like....

Anonymous said:

You didn't answer my question, are you not going to support Janet Nguyen as Van Tran promised?

Anonymous said:

Anon., Yes, we will support new supervisor.......in november....Dina Nguyen! I hope you will support her also. Thanks.

There's a campaign going on in case you have not noticed. Janet is not likely to get out of the Primary with over 50%. All of us will know soon enough who will be the next Supe. Talks of unity in the heat of a campaign is premature, at best, and presumtuous, at worse.

Vivian aka lady fingers, I think your unblemished pure lie PR work for Janet might give you an opportunity to run for another office ....after your past heart aching defeat.................. promised by Janet again?

Anon @2:49 PM,

Campaign's not over yet. Hold your horses and wait for the results.

Van Tran is full of himself when saying if Janet we will support her. Im not a big fan of Janet but I have to respect her independence. Unlike other elected Viet official who just do what Van Tran told them. What has Tran and other elected Viet official done for the community so far? They are just a bunch of self serving and incompetent. If I remember Van Tran run on the anti-fraud and saving issue but his wife and his brother in laws plead guity to insurance scam.

tan,
please give us a break. wait until you see janet greeting with a communist agent then you will know her dependence. if you can't wait then ask nick lecong or tony lam.

At the Republican Central Committee meeting on Monday night, Chairman Scott Baugh pulled a fast one. Recognizing that Judge John Nho Troung Nguyen as a non-Republican was barred from obtained the Republican endorsement by the regular procedure, he suprised the meeting with an effort to suspend the rules to endorse Judge Nguyen. Baugh advised the Committee that the Judge's registration was "Decline to State." Of course, Baugh failed to reveal that Judge Nguyen was appointed by Democrat Governor Gray Davis, that Judge Nguyen was a life long Democrat until just recently and that at age 69, Judge Nguyen just changed his first name to "John." So much for candor.

Tan,

Which rock or gutter did you climb out of to make statements like that? Personal attacks and mudslinging on behalf of Janet nguyen now? How did you think Janet Nguyen got to where she is? By growing wings and flying solo? Go talk to anyone outside of Janet's camp and they'll give you the full run down. What a moron you are. Take a bath and wash your filty mouth with soap.

By endorsing Janet Nguyen, the GOP will lose the Vietnamese American Community votes since Janet employed Tam Cong Le, a scrupupous business man with a shady past as her Vietnamese field manager. Granted that the Trannies have lost their support among the Vietnamese American Voters due due to the Trannies 's dirty tactics over Janet in the last election, but Dina Nguyen will likely beat Janet since she recently dated Andy Quach, and having him go around and raise fund for her, will boost up her strength significantly.

May be after all, this seat will belong to the lone Democrat fighter: Hoa Van Tran, the underdog candidate for supervisor.

So does that mean that whoever wants to get elected should date Andy Quach?

Brandon: I am so sorry, but not surprised, that the loyalty to the OCRP by the Viets goes only as far as - if the party follows what they want they will support the party. And they condemn and say that Janet is unloyal? Does this not seem like the pot calling the kettle black?

Buddy, sorry to break your heart but you need to go to Dem's blog for your fictional fairy tale.

It's possible. I wonder if Andy's power travels through lips? If that's the case then Paul Lucas may have a shot at his GG Council Race since he was seen smooching with Dina, who in fact, is/was dating Andy. It's all nutso. In my day, back in Italy, we'd find a man off the street, marry him, and be stuck with him for life.
