AD71 Watch: Miller Claims Big Fundraising Lead Over Blais

Jeff Miller Beating Opponent by Over 3 to 1 in Post 3/17 Fundraising
MISSION VIEJO, CA -- Campaign reports filed with the Secretary of State since the last quarterly report show that Republican Mayor Jeff Miller is leading his opponent by an over 3 to 1 margin in total contributions above $1000.
Since March 17, Jeff Miller has reported raising $68,800, whereas Neal Blais has reported only $21,500. These are major contributions that are required to be reported to the Secretary of State within 24 hours of receipt. These reports are indicative of the growing confidence among donors and Republican leaders that Jeff Miller will win the Primary.
"Jeff Miller continues to dominate in money, endorsements and grassroots support," said his consultant Dave Gilliard. "He has assembled a tremendous campaign, which is doing everything necessary to win the 71st District.
The 71st Assembly District includes portions of both Orange and Riverside Counties. Jeff Miller, who graduated from Tustin's Foothill High School and from California State University, Fullerton, has deep roots in both counties. He built a business in Mission Viejo before expanding it to Riverside County several years ago. He is the immediate past County Republican Party Chairman and currently serves as Mayor of Corona.

Tim Clark always tells his clients, "Money remains the number-one indicator of viability."
Neil's own team knows he's in big trouble
I am not sure it is over yet for Neil, but it sure is looking that way. I heard Jeff had and has planned huge precinct operations in OC over the next few weeks and more money. According to my score card, Neil probably wins the endorsement war by a hair and Jeff wins the grassroots and money war by a wide margin.
If Miller is so proud of Riverside, why does he leave Riverside out of his "County Republican Party Chairman" claim. Or is he trying to purposely try and mislead people into thinking he is a former OC Party Chair?
Not surprising with an ethically challenged candidate who spent public funds on a utility venture in which he had a private interest, who supports eminent domain for private gain, who opposed Tom McClintock's eminent domain reform, and votes for every tax and fee increase that comes accross his desk.
Once the Sacramento Boys see theses numbers Neils campaign is over. All the IE's are going to Miller and all Gary & Co can do is Blog for the next few weeks as the mail boxs fill up with Miller mail.
Miller's grass roots campaign doesn't even know where the district boundaries are. Lake Forest is in DeVore's district. Maybe Phil should train them how to read a precinct map...
I hear that Miller has been asked to attend the Democratic National Convention as a delegate for Barack Obama. He was selected based on his tax and spend record as a city councilman in Corona and for his unwavering support for the union label by his support for a Ceasar Chavez holiday.
I also heard that Phil was going with him and weas going to join Obama's team.
Jeff Miller will not win the primary because the voters aren't stupid. They see his record for what it is, they know he is a tax and spend liberal who will take private property in a heartbeat for private gain of others. They may vote for someone like that in Riverside County, but not in the OC.
Blais is finished. Watch for his endorsers to start "dual endorsing" soon.
I had a friend tell me the other day about a Miller mailer they got recently. She couldn't figure it out because she is a Democrat. If Miller's campaign is that stupid mailing to Democrats, it won't matter how much money he raises. What a bunch of amateurs running his show.
Karl:
Would it be asking too much for you to actually substantiate the charges against Miller you continually toss out?
Jubal, they are all a matter of public record. I have seen all of them. Why don't you go do your homework and read the public record yourself or do you not want to know the truth about your fair haired boy? And before you answer, I know it isn't your responsibility to verify this stuff. If you want them all published, how much bandwidth does your blog site have?
Hey Phil,
There is an RSM HOA meeting tomorrow night. Just thought you might be interested.
Hey, somebody tell the carpetbagger that Foothill High School isn't in Tustin! And he only went there for one year when he was passing through on his way to Corona. Hardly "roots" in Orange County. Blais is the only candidate with any real ties to OC and the only one who was elected by OC voters to represent OC.
Karl, just like I have said before. If you ask Jubal or others to prove you allegations, how on earth will you communicate with the voters?
"Hi, I am Neil. Jeff is bad, please look it up yourself if you don't believe me." Signed Neil.
Is that really your strategy? Seriously, that has to be one of the stupidest points I have ever heard a blogger make. If you think that is smart, you are doomed.
Karl:
Gloriaski, is this the first time you've ever been involved in a contested primary? Maybe it's news to you, but just because someone doesn't support your candidate doesn't make them your mortal enemy -- so stop acting as if it does.
I don't have time to read everyone's voting history -- not Jeff's and not Neil's. Sorry, but this blog isn't my full-time job.
But if you or anyone else are going to continually lob these charges, it isn't asking very much for you to simply substantiate them, is it?
Let's start with this-
“Councilmember Miller discussed the issue of eminent domain and noted that Senator Tom McClintock has proposed a ballot measure in response to the decision in Kelo v. City of New London, Connecticut… Mr. Miller indicated that…the legislation as proposed is flawed and may prevent government agencies from using eminent domain…”
Source: Corona City Council Meeting Minutes, 9/21/05
As stated and SUBSTANTIATED by the public record, Miller opposed Tom McClintock's emninent domain reform initiative.
And by the way. Since you talk about leving charges and substantiating them, when did I ever hear or see you ask any of Miller's people to substantiate their accusations of campaign money laundering by Blais? Or charges that he is lying about his loans and how he won't spend any of it? Why aren't you telling them to substantiate THOSE charges? Where is the public record to support them? Where is the citation of law that supports those accusations?
Be consistent Jubal.
Here's another item of public record.
“Candidate Jeff Miller, a member of the city's Parks and Recreation Commission, said he supports designating Chavez's birthday a paid holiday for city employees.”
Press Enterprise, 10/18/00
Here are a couple of utility items that beg the question- what did Miller have to hide?
“Community activists have urged the city to release the 338 e-mails, saying the messages will prove that Councilmen Darrell Talbert and Jeff Miller had a conflict of interest when they were pushing the city to take over Edison power lines and other facilities, an unsuccessful effort that cost the city $3 million.”
LA Times 6/9/2004
“After the city announced plans to release the documents, Miller and Talbert filed an injunction to block their release.”
Press Enterprise 7/23/2004
Karl:
Your second charge first.
It is simple for people to check charges regarding campaign spending. It's all there on the SOS website. And as I recall, no one charged the Blais campaign with money-laundering, but with playing games with a personal loan to pump up the numbers.
On the other hand, investigating charges of "raising taxes 300 times," for example, is not an easy task.
As for the McClintock initiative. First, a number of conservatives viewed McClintock's initiative as flawed. Tom is a great conservative, but he is not the arbiter of what is and isn't conservative, and disagreeing with him does not mean excommunication from conservatism.
Secondly, McClintock wound up signing on the the same eminent domain reform initiative of which Miller was the Riverside County chair. Does that mean McClintock thought his original initiative was flawed and therefore Tom McClintock isn't a conservative?
Back to the utility item. Now This editorial from the Press Enterprise would never had been written if there wasn't a lot of truth in it that is part of the records released on that entire fiasco, which are readily available. Miller may not have gone to jail over this, but he certainly did cost that city a bundle.
There is much more on this, but we will save that for another day......
“Politics in Corona have been supercharged ever since city officials decided in 2002 they could provide electricity better and cheaper than Southern California Edison - and authorized a municipal utility with little input from residents. The city's failed takeover of Edison's facilities cost taxpayers $ 3 million, and eroded confidence in local officials.
“At the same time, two councilmen, Jeff Miller and Darrell Talbert, launched a utility consulting business that improperly mingled their roles as city officials and private entrepreneurs - then fought in court to conceal public documents about the scheme… Miller's willingness to compromise a public office for private gain - and then fight to conceal public records - should disqualify him from a second term”
Press Enterprise 10/28/2004
Sorry, that last post was from me.
Karl:
I think we've already covered the e-mails. I asked Jeff about that. He said he didn't want to release his personal, non-city e-mails because they were private.
They got out anyway. Investigations by the DA and the feds cleared him. or doesn't that matter to you?
Karl:
Now you're just regurgitating stuff from that sleazy press release.
What's next? The sentence from a single e-mail without any context?
"I think we've already covered the e-mails. I asked Jeff about that. He said he didn't want to release his personal, non-city e-mails because they were private.
They got out anyway. Investigations by the DA and the feds cleared him. or doesn't that matter to you?"
Jubal,
Do you really think that "asking Jeff Miller" about this is going to get you a straight answer? What did you expect him to say? So what if they were private? If they involved city activities and city business, they are not private. Maybe you should go read the Brown act and learn something about that.
But the fact remains, he tried to hide emails concerning public city business and had to have a judge order them released. What did that cost the city to defend him? and why hide them in the first place if he had nothing to hide? Clearly the Press Enterpise saw right through what was going on.
As far as the DA and the feds "clearing him", that isn't completely so. They just decided not to charge him. but the point is this, he spent $3,000,000 of public funds to take a private utility and turn it into a public agency. And as part of the process he "just happened to be a utility consultant".
Jubal, you can spin your way around this all you want, but you have to admit that there was something rotten in Denmark when this was all going on.
Karl:
I'm not spinning anything. You, on the other hand, are very selective in the information you present. You keep referring to that P-E editorial and allege corruption, but never mention the very relevant fact that Miller was investigated and never charged with anything (BTW, I'm glad to know that not being charged with something somehow equates to being guilty).
As for Miller's utility consulting: did he have a consulting contract or relationship with the City of Corona on the attempt to take over the Edison power lines? Or are you just making a smear-by-association? Wouldn't that put local elected officials who hire themselves out to help clients get approvals from other local elected officials in the same realm of being "ethically challenged"?
Hey Slice,
Why don't you take a bit of your own advice and take a field trip to Foothill High School. You would find out that it is in North Tustin (Unincorporated county land) and is part of the Tustin Unified School District. As for Miller being a carpet bagger, I'm sure he had plans of "carpet bagging" an Assembly seat during his high school years. Please explain to us all how any of Miller's actions can even be relatively construed as carpet bagging?
Trust me that I know the district well, but apparently you do not. As you just said, the school isn't in Tustin. It's mailing address is actually Santa Ana. Mr. Miller is trying desperately, and not particularly honestly, to make himself out to be an OC guy. Every one of his press releases uses a dateline of Mission Viejo when he has no recent or current connection to that city and everyone knows it. Why Mr. Miller is trying so hard to hide the fact that he lives in Corona, is the Mayor of that city, and chaired the Riverside County party is beyond me. Does he really think that OC voters in the 71st will be fooled by this subterfuge? It seems to me the voters have a clear choice: If you think OC should be more like Corona, then vote for Miller. If not, vote for the guy who actually lives here and has represented OCers for many years.
Slice-
Miller's campaign office is in Mission Viejo. He used to live in Mission Veijo and he is soon going to represent MV in Sacramento. So your assertion that he has no connection to that city is ridculous.
HEY OC- OC Voters don't vote by geography--don't believe me? Just ask- Gary Miller, Bob Huff, Bob Margett, Darrell Issa! They all represent/ed your county while driving over the county line after work was done to go to sleep.
They do care about leadership and that is why Miller is going to win handedly.
Theses Blogs postings are fun for the 40 people that read them. The difference is that Miller is going to be able to communicate with real voters via the mail and media in the next 5 weeks because he has put the $$$ together. Neils team will continue to BLOG and BLOG & BLOG.
So who cares where Miller's campaign office is? If Blais opened one in Corona, so what? As far as Foothill High School and Tustin/North Tustin- maybe Miller thinks North Tustin should be annexed into Tustin even though those folks don't want any part of it. If I were the North Tustin folks, I would be concerned about Miller already talking like they are already annexed. Then the next thing you know, Miller will be using eminent doamin to snatch someones home and turn it into a strip mall for the city, and issue a press release proclaiming how he personally got enough tax dollars for Tustin to support the annexation. He is pretty good at that.
I don't know Phil, I heard a rumor that one of those HOA guys in RSM tapped a family trust and is dumping $500K into an IE for Blais. That would be a lot of mail.
Having no horse in this race, I don't live in that district....Just let me say that after having seen both gentlemen speak at a recent endorsement convention; I have to say Blais seems like the more sincere and better qualified candidate. Jeff Miller was slick, has more $ and a good consulting firm. If that's all it takes to convince voters of the competency of a candidate then you should welcome Obama as your next President.
