Rick Reiff's OC Insider: Jack Anderson Putting "Act" Into Acting Sheriff
Posted by: Jubal | 03/10/2008 4:25 PM
He's acting sheriff with the emphasis on "act." Jack Anderson, who wants to be appointed as Mike Carona's permanent replacement, has already fired a former superior (Jo Ann Galisky) amid a grand jury probe of a jail beating death. And he's gone where Carona didn't dare: He has proposed replacing close to 800 jail deputies with lower-paid correctional officers. (The replacements would be phased in as deputies retire or are reassigned.) The deputies' union has howled, but the supes have reacted favorably toward an idea that could save tens of millions of dollars annually. And Nick Berardino, whose union for non-deputy county employees could wind up representing the new jail personnel, calls Anderson's plan "the boldest move in 30 years of county government." Compared to it, says Berardino, Supe John Moorlach's attempt to rescind the deputies' "retroactive" pension increases, "looks like a lawn party" ...

Why in the world would the BOS allow Anderson to do any of this stuff now? This is the worst leadership scenario possible. Not because the plans are bad (they may be however), but Jack is a temp and he could end up creating a bigger problem for the perm guy if this is not done properly. And the "change of policy by press release" makes it seem that Jack doesn't understand what is needed to make effective change.
Better to let the perm guy (even if it is Jack) make the changes later and live or die by the decision. There is no reason to rush anything and it ends up looking like grandstanding.
On the contrary, if he just sat there and acted as a "caretaker" then that is all he would be considered. Leaders don't stand idly by while opportunity for progress passes them by. Jack sees a need for change and he's making it. Is it self serving? Maybe, but there is no harm in building up your reputation by making positive change.
Given the monumental task ahead, it's doubtful that most of the change could be implemented before a permanent Sheriff takes office, but a healthy dialogue and strategy planning is far from "creating a bigger problem".
I give him credit for the effort and applaud his willingness to lead.
You are right on the money, Green Machine.
Anderson could come up with the cure for cancer and it wouldn't be good enough for the naysayers. If he sat back and was just a caretaker, he would also be criticized.
I like how Anderson thinks and that he is willing to move the Department in a few new directions.
Anyone who thinks these ideas are Anderson's needs to go back to the Braille Institute. Anderson is being told what to do by the Board of Supes and Carona's old handlers. He is clearly out of his league and is only being used a way to eventually get the REAL Gop choice, Ralph Martin, in the top spot. There is a reason he is universally despised within the department--he is Carona's gift to the OCSD. And one hell of a booby prize, too.
Nah, I can see bright and clear. Jack is not being told what to do. He is his own man. He, as well as hundreds of others, were promoted by Carona, but that doesn't mean he or any of the others he's promoted are beholden to him. Carona is gone, get over it! Sounds like sour grapes to me. Maybe you didn't get promoted???
I (and many others I have spoke with) are encouraged by the job Jack Anderson is doing as Sheriff. Keep up the good work!
I think you've got your minorities and majorities mixed up. There are always going to be those who are negative and critical of everything. I think Anderson is looking at the bigger picture and wants to make some positve changes. So what if it benefits the dept. and also pleases the BOS at the same time?! Why can't you just realize he can come up with good ideas without being told what to do by the BOS? You are just wanting your candidate to get in. I hope the BOS does put Anderson in charge. It would be the best thing that could happen to the dept. and the county.
...maybe the AOCDS should take another survey...perhaps Jack's 99 votes were a typo....

the only reason the ocsd is so uptight about what jack is doing is because they no longer get to sit on there arses and beat inmates all day ,and still get paid. they hate and the fact that corretional officers will come in do a better job and show the public that the ocsd is unwilling to police itself and earn a real living by working the street.but then again you would put all those crooked offficers on the street, insted of hiding them away in the jails so either way the public loses. still anderson is doing a good thing by bringing attention to the ocsd and allowing the public to see where there money goes(a money pit of dirty cops).
