So let me get this straight... Paul Walters, Chief of Police for the most out of control, gang infested city in O.C. is trying to slime his way into the Sheriff's office via appointment thinking that paying Lewis Consulting Group a ton of money will do the trick? LOL!!! I like John & Matt but this one is just cheesy.

Is this the same Paul Walters who cut a backroom deal with Carona last election to endorse him in exchange for Carona to hire his son, who washed out of HBPD during probation, directly into the courts instead of starting in the jails like most everyone else?

Is this the same Paul Walters who has been doubling dipping at the expense of Santa Ana taxpayers by retiring then being rehired by the Mayor and City Council?

Is this the same Paul Walters who just recently (Nov 2007) registered as a Republican and "moved" to Santa Ana to look good on his appointment resume?

Is this the same Paul Walters who looked the other way while all the malfesance was going on in the Sheriff's Department all these years and said nothing or did nothing publicly to the contrary, due to the backroom deals with Carona?

Is this the same Paul Walters who's broke and needs this "gig" so he can make some money to pad his retirement since he's divorced and has to split his current paycheck with his ex-wife? (Great motivation for seeking appointment I guess)

Is this the same Paul Walters whose city has a climbing homicide rate, out of control graffiti, gang infested neighborhoods... i.e. the worst patrolled streets in the county?

This friend of Carona is the guy who wants to seriously be considered to be appointed to Sheriff when he can't even effectively police one city! His rank and file say "Please take him!" I say we can't afford him!

Note to John & Matt: Make sure he pays you with cashiers checks.

I should note that John and Matt aren't being paid and haven't signed a contract.

If Walters is appointed, they would presumably then become paid consultants to the Walters campaign.

Politicians frequently "adjust" their positions to accommodate a shifting political landscape. Their adjustments are usually couched in political rhetoric or so nuanced that John Q Citizen barely notices. Not so with wanna-be OC sheriff Paul Walters.

September 2002 - Walters becomes candidate for LA Chief of Police (as a Democrat) Republicans need not apply for LA Chief of Police.
2006 - Walters endorses Bill Lockyer for State Treasurer (Walters is registered DTS)
2006 - Walters endorses Lou Correa for State Senate (Walters is registered DTS)
2006 - Walters endorses Mike Carona's reelection (Walters registered DTS)
10/30/07 - Mike Carona indicted. (Walters reregisters Republican on 11/28/07)

Lewis and Holder were also the boys running Carona last campaign and claiming aggressively that there was no basis to my reporting of Carona's slime. Ironic, huh?

Hey Red, you should thank them because without John & Matt you wouldn't be sitting on the OC Planning Commission.

Don't forget that Lewis also ran Orange USD's second bond campaign... oh by the way, it lost by more votes the second time than the first. Oops, so much for a local consultant there.

Walters is a good choice. Despite the carping from one of the commenters, his Department is well run in an extremely difficult environment. I supported him in 98 and had he been elected then we would have had a professionally run Department without the ehtical issues. I could care less about his party affiliation or changes. He never let partisan political matter interfere with his duties as Chief of Police and he won't do that if he is selected as County Sheriff. There's no room for party politics in this position.

John and Matt are a solid team. That can only help Walters. Props to them for volunteering to help.

I agree with Bladerunner. I think most people outside the city have no idea what would happen to Santa Ana if it weren't for the consistency in leadership Walters provides. The citizens and city officials do, however, and while they support his desire to win the Sheriff appointment because he is the best candidate, they are scared to death that he will leave--because he has been an exceptional chief.

Walters had my backing and the greatest of respect until he used Lewis and all his latest politics of getting into the SO seat.
(By the way they do not even back Walters either)Kind of sounds like some other man that used to sit in that seat. Now you want to call me names, use your real name or please shhhhh.... At least I have the guts to. Not to mention I wonder how the other Deputies feel that Chief Walters son did NO jail time as he flew right past jail duty, and patrol duty it sounds like. I will be silent no more. It's show time. The Sheriff's seat holds no Rep. or Dem. value. But it looks like both Carona and Walters think just a like. I am very disappointed.

The entire city of Santa Ana is ready to implode. They are out of money and are down almost 50 cops right now. The city manager will probalby leave soon and the city will be helpless. The PD is dysfunctional already.

Sorry, Karen: Everything you say is immediately discounted by the fact that you are such an avid supporter of Attila the Hunt. You have some problems, I am sorry for you in that regard, but you have nothing on which to base your allegations of misconduct in regard to Walters' son. Last time I checked, you are not on the list of Walters' confidants.
