More on the Cook Congressional Candidacy...

Posted by: Tomahawk | 03/24/2008 8:48 AM

I find it disturbing that some folks are not alarmed by the campaign of Debbie Cook for Congress.  Under normal circumstances, the CD 46 seat is solidly in the GOP column and Democrats need not apply.  However, with the current political landscape so unfavorable for Republicans nationwide, we should take the threat from Debbie Cook seriously.

Some people in my party may dismiss Cook as a token candidate that we should not acknowledge or bring attention to, but so far she is the most prominent Democratic officeholder to challenge Congressman Dana Rohrabacher in recent years.  Ballot title aside, Cook is still a Council Member from the biggest city in the district whose campaign submitted over 1,100 signatures in lieu.  I mean what was Loretta Sanchez before she unseated Bob Dornan? A nobody.  Nothing more than a failed Anaheim City Council candidate who ran as Loretta Bixby.

What should set off more alarms is the fact that Loretta Sanchez requested Democratic attorney Fred Woodcher to come in and assist Debbie Cook.  Sanchez is personally targeting a Republican Congressman in Orange County!

About using the "Mayor" ballot title, Nicole Winger of the Secretary of State's office (a friend of Woodcher) is wrong on her assessment about what constitute principle profession, occupation or vocation, basically the way she spends most of her time.  On her ballot designation worksheet, Cook cited that she was an elected Council Member from Huntington Beach and was appointed Mayor by her colleagues in 2007 as a supporting fact that she could use such a ballot title.  No where on the worksheet did Debbie Cook say that being Mayor was her full time job and unless she's personally wealthy, I don't think the lady can live off of her meager Council stipend.

Hopefully the judges will reach a similar conclusion.

You think they ain't alarmed? Poor Tomahawk. It looks like you were taken off the CC list for the memos.

Oh, and BTW: Schroeder has known all along he can't win the suit. He's only in it for the depo.

Well, that and the fact that he likes to smack women around (figuratively, of course).

The is a good post. I think Dana would be stupid to not take this race seriously. We just lost Dennis Hastert's supposedly "safe seat" in Illinois. This is already shaping up to be probably another good Democratic year. I would be shocked if this seat went Dem, but not completely surprized considering the atmosphere this year the Reps have to run in.

Couldn't agree more.

That's why I think the Republicans who are criticizing Schroeder's lawsuit are the same folks who told B-1 not to fret about a random Anaheim city councilmember...

THawk--Wake up and smell the coffee lad! The Dark Lord doesn't throw the high hard ones unless the race has potential to be close. The Red management gets it. All is not lost however. Your Paul Revere effort may awake the Red chattering class to the danger in the belly of the beast.

And as for the Mayor issue, cast the beam( Mssrs. Miller, Blais & Hagman)out of your own eye before you attempt to cast the mote(Cook) out of your brothers eye(apologies to Matthew 7:1-5)

If Dana thinks he's in trouble, then he should just fess up and tell us that he's in trouble. We'll all rally around him. I'll send him a hundred bucks. We sure don't want the district to go to a Democrat. How embarrassing would that be?

All Dana needs to do is ask. But don't have your surrogates file silly, frivolous lawsuits to get your point across. That's way too subtle.

Just say "Hey...this woman could beat me, and I need help."

Did Cook collect those sigs by volunteer walks?

or did she mail out sigs-in-lieu petitions, with return postage included?

If the latter, who paid for the mailer?

BR-

You know better than that. Just because Schroeder & Co. files a lawsuit doesn't mean the rest of the county is aware of the danger. Most, as you can tell by the anon posts, still think that the lawsuit is silly because Debbie never had a chance.

Anon-

I doubt Dana is crunching ROV numbers, but I'm sure Schroeder is. That's why instead of Dana saying "hey, this woman could help me, need your help", it's Schroeder instead saying "we're taking care of this nuisance now before it turns into a bigger problem".

Props to Schroeder and Baric on this one.

Yes, she did, in the space of 9 days. I should know, I collected 160 of them myself! You should see the enthusiasm out here.

And you guys SHOULD be worried... I ran into a lot of Republicans who regretted they couldn't sign the Mayor's in-lieu petition. They especially like it when I tell them about her "Responsible Plan to End the War in Iraq." (www.responsibleplan.com)

All in all this is good news for the Rohrabacher triplets who will get to see their father a lot more, and also for Dana's budding Hollywood screenwriting career.

Hey Tomahawk,

Congresswoman Sanchez's married name when she ran for the Anaheim City Council was Loretta Brixey not Bixby. Please, in the name of journalistic professionalism, get your facts straight. I don't think they would ever make a mistake like this on the Orange Juice Blog...LOL I really hope the person behind the Tomahawk pen name is not an elected offical. You clearly are not even capable of serving on something as simple as the Midway City Sanitary District.

D'Anconia-- You do me wrong. I simply said the GOP management knew of the threat(No Pearl Harbor, no B-1 Bob, no Dennis Hasert seat on Baugh's watch). I glibly noted that T-Hawks Paul Revere ride would be of help waking up the chattering class, or perhaps I should have said woken up the Red contributor class).

But I still think its much ado about nothing(not too many in a partisan race will vote for her as a Mayor but not as a council member). Other then war by attrition(in which case I submit she will raise at least as much if not more that she'll need here as a result of the publicity)and the hypocrisy with the GOP Gang of 3 Non-Directly elected mayors. By the way, any idea of whether they have any outside income or how much time of their day they spend as mayors?

I have lived in HB and will give you some background about all this. Yes Debbie Cook has done very well in local elections. In fact, ALL WOMEN do. For example, the Ocean View School District has not elected a man to the board until very recently.

Anytime, a woman runs for city council in HB, she AWLAYS wins whether she is as far right as Cathy Green, as corrupt as Pam Julien Houchen, or as far left as Debbie Cook.

In addition, city council races are "non-partisan". So people do not vote according to party.

Now a congressional race is partisan and one must list their party affiliation. In this district being a Republican is very advantageous.

Even if Osama Bin Laden was the candidate, there are cool aid drinkers that will vote R, no matter what. But to be fair there are plenty of Democrat Kool-Aid drinkers who would also vote for Osama Bin Laden if he had a D after his name.

Dana wins this race on the basis that Republican Kool-Aid drinkers far outnumber Democrat Kool-Aid drinkers.

Debbie Cook has been a generally decent mayor who does not appear to have any corrupt skeletons lingering in her closet, unlike other disgraced council members. But the numbers for a run for congress are just not in her favor.

More like the Self-Contradictory, Bromide-Laden, Doomed-to-Failure Plan to End the War in Iraq."

But by all means, run on a defeatist platform. They've always gone over well in Orange County.

d'Anconia said:

BR-got it, thanks for the clarification. I did you wrong.

Surf City Citizen! You've fixed up your spelling since the last time you put up that identical, incisive comment (over at Howie Klein's place.) Good work!

Sure Jubal, 2008, 2002, what's the difference!

There's nothing "defeatist"in this plan anyway. Didn't we win in Iraq? We got Saddam, freed the Iraqis, determined that there were no WMD and no Al Qaeda connections.. our work is done there! We won! Time to come home with honor. I think that will go over well in OC and anywhere else.

Oh. You didn't want to stay there forever did you?

Schroeder's suit seem to be working against Dana. Mayor Cook is now getting the national attention that she was not generating before the lawsuit. It will be interesting to see if her team can turn this in to donations to run a strong campaign.

As I typed in Feb when Mayor Cook announced her run, in just about any other year I'd say no way a dem could win. This year however is very different. And yes Jubal the War issue will have a significant impact in November. Along with the economy this will be the two biggest factors in a record turnout and lots of new dems. These are not issues that Dana has done anything positive, just try to remember his leadership in these area's.

This could be the year for the 46th!
