Assemblywoman Mimi Walters Unveils Illegal Immigration Reform Legislation
SACRAMENTO - Assemblywoman Mimi Walters (R-Laguna Hills) joined other members of the Assembly Republican Caucus yesterday at a press conference unveiling the Caucus' illegal immigration legislative reform package. The legislative package included 23 bills addressing the fiscal impact of illegal immigration on the State of California as well as the impact it has on local communities.
Two of the bills unveiled in the legislative package were authored by Assemblywoman Walters. Assembly Bill 2102 (Walters) will require that after hiring an employee, every state agency electronically verifies the employment eligibility of that employee by using the E-Verify system. Assembly Bill 2317 (Walters) requires proof of citizenship when registering to vote.
"The impact that illegal immigration has on our State - especially Southern California - is devastating. It is devastating for our schools, our roads, our hospitals, and our communities. It even harms our system of democracy." Walters said at the press conference.
"Too often, people say that illegal immigration is strictly a Federal issue," Walters continued. "However, there are measures we can take at the state level to make California a less attractive destination for those who come to this country illegally. It is about time that we take steps to protect our State from the fiscal impact of illegal immigration and the danger it poses to our national security."
Walters was joined at yesterday's press conference by ten other Members of the Assembly Republican Caucus, including Assemblyman Bob Huff, Assemblyman Jim Silva, and Assemblyman Chuck DeVore.

It came over the transdom from Senator Mimi Walters' office? That's impressive.
2102 appears smart. I'd like to understand better the E-verify system. 2317 is stupid. Aside from being able to point to it as evidence of her "tough stand on illegal immigration" for future federal office bids, it accomplishes nothing except to increase spending. That bill is probably not worth the paper it was printed on. I will, however, stand corrected if I were to see some statistics on how many illegal immigrants voted in the past 4 elections. My understanding is that 1) they have more important thigns to worry about; and 2) are afraid of getting deported - both of which lead me to believe the occurrence is rare that creating a system to stop it would be utterly absurd.
It doesn't look like the committee analysis has been released yet on 2317 to provide costs, but I think it's a worthy expenditure to improve the integrity of the electoral process. If you remember, illegals didn't seem too worried about deportation when they marched for "Day Without A Mexican."
Right now we really don't have any verification process. I presume it would also catch those individuals who were registered or reregistered involuntarily by paid voter registration service employees (many of whom are desperate temps).
Its great that she does this during an election, but she could have voted for illegal immigration reform when it counted but decided not to. So I get it this is what she runs the race on, but seriously: why no vote when she was there? That counts more to me.
How many times was she given the opportunity to vote for illegal immigration reform?
The Dems' dominating "Latino/a Caucus" usually kills off those bills at the first reading.
Finally a courageous Politician!!
Obviously "Sac Watch" has not been watching Sac for very long. Mimi introduced AB 1855 in 2006 to require voters to present ID at the polls. Of course that bill didn't make it past its initial committee vote, but it is a stretch to claim that Mimi has not tried to reform illegal immigration and its related problems prior to this year.
"Sac Watch" must be anti-Mimi for a reason....
She should have been writing this kind of legislation when she first got into office, not in the middle of a campaign season. That way she could say she has been fighting illegal immigration from day one instead of trying to get a bump in the polls.
Assemblymembers have two-year terms! They're ALWAYS in the middle of a campaign season. They're ALWAYS fundraising. And because they're term-limited, they're ALWAYS looking to move up to the next step in the ladder.
It really makes no sense to criticize Walters for not introducing some bill sooner. We should just be pleased she's introduced them at all.
