This came over the transom a few minutes ago from the OC Registrar of Voters:
Petitions Verified as Sufficient for Capistrano Unified School District Board Recall ElectionSheila Benecke and Marlene Draper are toast, and would be doing themselves a favor by resigning rather than endure the humiliation of being recalled by the voters. But they've been on the CUSD Board of Trustees since the reign of Charlemagne, so pride may not allow it.
Santa Ana, CA - March 10, 2008 - Today the Orange County Registrar of Voters certified as sufficient the two petitions to recall Capistrano Unified School District's (CUSD) board members Sheila Benecke and Marlene Draper. The petitions meet the number of qualified signatures needed to place a recall election on the ballot.
Proponents of the CUSD board recall submitted the petitions to the Registrar of Voters on January 28, 2008. The proponents needed 20,493 registered voter signatures for each petition to qualify a recall election for the ballot. Qualified signatures consisted of registered voters within the CUSD jurisdiction.
The Registrar of Voters reviewed approximately 33,000 signatures per petition during the certification process. The results of the certification were delivered to the proponents and to the Office of the Superintendent of the Capistrano Unified School District.
Pursuant to the California Elections Code the certificate of sufficiency shall be submitted to the governing body at its next regular meeting.

CUSD Recall

Aren't these two up for re-election in November anyway? How much is being spent on this recall election? At this point, it just seems like an ego trip by the pro-recall folks.
Not at all. Every CUSD board meeting meeting, fiscally minded constituents have to sit on the edge of their seats hoping these two spendthrift wretches don't plunge the district deeper into financial ruin. The cost of a recall (even at hundreds of thousands) will be a bargain compared to the ten of millions these two have wasted. The sooner, the better.
If you had paid attention to the scores of well-publicized and documented material offenses of Benecke and Draper over the years, you would know that the recall has everything to do with establishing honesty, integrity and accountability at CUSD, and nothing to do with ego. If ego had anything to do with the recall, it was honest constituents who had had enough of the arrogant disrespect and unresponsive mismanagement of Benecke and Draper who should have been booted from the district long ago.
