CD47 Watch: Gilchrist Is Out, Avila Is In

Among our topics on today's Red County Radio Roundtable segment was whether Jim Gilchrist or Rosemarie Avila would carry the GOP banner against Rep. Loretta Sanchez.
Adam Probolsky reported that. according to his sources, Avila was able to talk Gilchrist out of running, and that the other candidate -- a guy named Joel Story -- would also not complete his filing. The upshot would be Avila unopposed for the GOP nomination.
I'm trying to confirm this, but if true it is good news, in my opinion. I don't think either Avila or Gilchrist can beat Sanchez. The real game is in 2010, when Assemblyman Van Tran presumably runs in CD47 either against Sanchez or in an open seat if Sanchez goes through with her plans to seek statewide office.
The first consideration in the GOP's CD47 candidate this year should be Hippocratic: First, do no harm.
In other words, let's not nominate someone who will make the likely 2010 Van Tran effort more difficult -- and I think a Gilchrist candidacy would have done that for obvious reasons.
UPDATE (11:55 a.m.): I just spoke with a Gilchrist confidant he confirmed the Minuteman founder made a decision last week not to run.
Looks like it's going to be Sanchez versus Avila.
