AD71 Watch: Blais Campaign Getting Sleazy

Posted by: Jubal | 03/31/2008 1:02 PM

The bitter battle between Corona Mayor Jeff Miller and Rancho Santa Margarita Mayor Neil Blais to win the GOP nod in the 71st Assembly District is well on its way to being OC's nastiest June contest.

Lately, the Blais campaign is going over that fine line between political hard-ball and sleazy politics.

For example, twice in the past week I've received a press release from the Blais campaign basically accusing Jeff Miller of public corruption.

Plus, a commenter obviously affiliated with the Blais campaign has been repeatedly calling Miller a "tax and spend liberal" and charging him with the following sins:

- 300 tax and fee increases
- 12 eminent domain takings
- Opposed Tom McClintock's eminent domain reform initiative
- Cesar Chavez holiday

While the burden of proof ought to be on the Blais campaign to substantiate these charges, I called Miller to ask him about the charges.

Let's take the 300 tax/fee increase charge. This is a variation on the standard tactic of coming through a councilmember's record and labeling every single vote that increases the cost of anything as a tax increase. For example, Miller said the cost to Corona of buying Colorado River water increased by $6 million last year.  That cost is inevitably passed on to water uses -- but it's hardly a tax increase.

But the ludicrousness of the charge is best put in perspective when you consider there have been about 150 council meetings since Miller was elected to the Corona City Council --- meaning the Blais campaign is accusing Miller of raising taxes and fees twice at every council meeting.

Then there's the "12 eminent domain takings." According to Miller, the city has taken 3 or 4 eminent domain takings since he's been on the council -- meaning the Blais campaign must be counting the first and second reading votes on the same taking as separate takings. Not very honest.

Furthermore, these were transportation-related takings for things like freeway off-ramps. In other words, they were for precisely the purposes for which eminent domain is intended.

Miller told me one action involved a home. It's owned by a 90-year old woman, and the agreement calls for her to remain in her home as long as she likes or until she passes away - at which time the city will pay her heirs the market value of the home.

Then there's the "Opposed Tom McClintock's eminent domain reform initiative" charge. This is a strange charge considering Miller was Riverside County co-chair for Proposition 90.

What about the "Cesar Chavez holiday" charge? The implication is Miller voted for a paid municipal Cesar Chavez holiday -- which Corona doesn't have. Miller thinks this charge must stem from a fall 2000 Press-Enterprise news story about a council candidate forum in which support for a Cesar Chavez holiday was mistakenly attributed to him instead of one of the other two candidates who were also named "Jeff." Miller sent a retraction letter to the P-E, but doesn't recall whether the Press-Enterprise actually ran a retraction.

More later...

With all due respect, Jubal, that knife certainly cuts both ways, if at all.

Meaning what?

What is sleazy is the Miller camp claiming that Blais was dishonest about his past political party registration, manipulating the CRA, and making false claims about fundraising. At least the Blais charges are fact regardless of how they are presented.

Jubal Smacks Neil said:

Wow.

This is big news. Jubal, the neutral referee from the OC, smacks Neil for bascially lying about Miller's record.

I don't have a horse in this race... but just want to point out that this is pretty significant.

Anonymous said:

"At least the Blais charges are fact regardless of how they are presented."

The newspaper misattributes a vote and recants it and you run down the field as if it is accurate and essentially claim, "the paper said it was true". Jubal just shined a spot light on how you come to your ridiculous conclusions. Your attacks are baisless and inaccurate.

And when did the Miller campaign claim Blais was dishonest about his party affliation? They simply pointed out that he recently was a registered Democrat that only changed when he charted his political career. How is that dishonest? Looks like the truth to me.

While I am supporting Jeff, I know Neil to be better than this. He has always told me that he was going to run a "clean" campaign. I am all for educating voters but to misrepresent the facts is ugly and way below Neil. I hope he wises up before he proceeds down this road. An Assembly seat is not worth selling out your character.

The last post is moronic.

Gosh said:

Who is the moron who did the research against Miller? He ought to be shot for incompetence. This will doom the Blais campaign.

please don't blame Neil said:

Neil is not in control of his campaign. He is a Christian man and would not be agreeing to this dishonest style of campaigning. I suspect he is being sold a bill of goods by his handlers, or may not even know what is being said under his banner.

Anonymous said:

The comment about Miller opposing Tom McClintock's eminent domain initiative is directly from the minutes of the city council meeting where he stated it. And those minutes were referenced on the flyer that Blais distributed at the CRA endorsing convention.

So Jubal, have you bothered to call Blais and ask him about this stuff or are you just going to accept for fact what Miller told you?

If you are going to be truely objective, then maybe you should talk to Blais and see what he has to say.

Yes on 98 said:

Tom had a bill but I don't think he ever had a ballot initiative. If I recall, Prop 90 was even stronger than Tom's bill, so if Miller supported 90, that says a lot. I also checked the Yes on 98 wesbite and it says Miller and Blais have both endorsed 98.

Note to 4:43 - Jubal clearly stated that he was biased in the prior AD71 watch blog.

It would be nice to hear it from the horse's mouth on both sides, though.

We have heard from both sides said:

Really, hear from both sides?

Neil started this debate and has kept it going as the mantra of his campaign. His 'anonymous' posters on this site have all but chanted the hits as Jubal pointed out.

Neil's supporters request a response from Miller, Jubal goes and gets a response from Miller apparently with back up, and now you want to hear from both sides?

Don't ask questions if you don't know the answers, and, ultimately, don't get angry when third parties step up, engage your opponent, and come away convinced Blais is sleazy.

redperegrine said:

A lot of prominent Republicans opposed Prop 90 (like Dick Ackerman, as I recall). Many bought into the League of Cities opposition - due ostenisbly to the downzoning issue, although many were no doubt beholden to the CRA (California Redevelopment Association) and its camp followers.

If I lived in the district I would like to know where each candidate stood on that proposed amendment.

Miller Koolaid said:

I didn't know citing the public record is considered sleazy. Jubal is just too biased to admit that maybe he may have drank from the Miller koolaid, and now is compelled to defend him in spite of the evidence that is coming forth that Miller may not necessarily be the conservative darling that the koolaid drinkers thought.

He asks Miller, gets Miller's expected response, and prints it as gospel. I would venture to bet that he hasn't even asked Blais for any of the documents, or his comments.

What this comes down to is a typical campaign where two sides have squared off, and it has gotten ugly. Gee, so what? This isn't a social tap dance session. This is a political campaign, and S*** happens. As far as the negative goes, Miller started all of this with his Blais bashing. And Jubal even has to admit that Miller's campaign fired the first shot. Now that Blais has decided to release some of what he has on the guy, it appears that Miller can't stand his dirty laundry being aired in the blogs. Well isn't that just too bad!

Miller has refused to address the issues, has continued to engage in a negative campaign, which he started in spite of Jubal's ascertion otherwise, and cannot run from the true public record which is now coming to light.

Who knows where and when Blais will present the proof of the public record, but I would assume that this is something his campaign will do when it makes the most sense. In the mean time, hoist another glass of koolaid.

Blais' KuehlAID is out of ideas said:

Once again, you cite "evidence". Dude, just document it, prove the points. Your post says NOTHING. If the Blais campaign is as dense as you are, it is over.

So where is Blais' "release", where is the proof? To think that Blais is waiting for timing is foolish, because the statements are already made. You guys can't even make a good argument in a blog, you are pathetic. Jubal prints it because he called Miller and got an answer. Neil (and your dunce blog team) it is time to prove it. Did Miller take someone's home for greed purposes, did he abuse the his role?

KuehlAID, I am calling you out. Show us the vote, the date, time and abuse, RIGHT NOW!!!

Blaised with Neil's Drugs said:

Question for Miller Kool Aid-

Do you assert that "Jeff started it" when he sent out a press release informing the blogshere that Neil admitted publicly that he recently re-registered as a Republican?

Jubal said:

So Jubal, have you bothered to call Blais and ask him about this stuff or are you just going to accept for fact what Miller told you?

Hold the phone there, pal.

As I recall, I posted the Blais campaign press release accusing Miller of public corruption.

Furthermore, the Blais campaign has been aggressively slinging the above-reference charges in the comments of this blog.

And now I'm the bad guy because I gave Miller a chance to respond to those charges?

I think you've got your outrage a little backwards. The Blais campaign has more than gotten out their side of the story. And they are free to offer substantiation of their charges.

If you are going to be truely objective, then maybe you should talk to Blais and see what he has to say.

Ah, the old "you're not being objective!" complaint. And since when did I claim to be objective? This is a blog, not a newspaper. OC Blog has never claimed to be objective.

Former OC Sheriff said:

What--Jeff Miller abused his position and personally profited from his elected office? Perhaps I endorsed the wrong candidate in the 71st. Nah, Neil Blais continues to share my values and I am proud to endorse him.

This is Stupid -- I Don't Want Either Candidate said:

This is Stupid -- I Don't Want Either Candidate. Blais and Miller both seem to be self absorbed "politicians" focussed solely on their own personal ambitions instead of the issues people really care about. Can't the Republican Party do better than these two bozos?

I understand that GST Consulting did the op research on Miller. Isn't that the same firm that is owned by another councilmember of the RSM HOA.

Blais- Next time you have the 10 Commandments out you might want to take a close look at # 9

This means you shoudn't make up pure lies about Jeff Miller.

You're right about needing to always hire a pro. They came well short. But it wasn't Gary... It was a BOE staffer from what I hear.

Anonymous said:

I think all the Miller pundits are feeling it again. As for Jubal, well, he at least has admitted his bias. And he dodged the question when asked if he picked up the phone and talked to Blais. It looks like he didn't, and he won't. Because he can't handle the truth.

300 Tax & Fee increases
12 eminent doman takings
Opposed Tom McClintock's eminent domain reform
Ceasar Chavez Holiday
And the utility scam that cost Corona taxpayers $3 million

The public record doesn't lie. Jubal can publish the Miller spin all he wants, but in the end, the paper trail tells the true story.

Anonymous said:

To Blaised-

Blais did not just "recently" re-register as a republican. He did that over 10 years ago. So do you have evidence to dispute that?

And what difference does it make? A former Dem is not allowed to become a republican? Tell that to Ronald Reagan.

One more time you Miller stooges just can't talk about issues. You want to sling dirt at Blais, his city and his campaign, and when you get some back you can't deal with it. Too bad children.

The 10 Commandments are over rated. You and I are hanging strong on this one. You still continue to have my endorsement !!!!

10:14--Maybe instead of sending out press releases for Michelle Steel, the BOE staffer can go to Wildomar and count fire stations? Apparently, they hired an amatuer to do that too.

Always Hire A Professional said:

Sorry Gary. The op research was just so screwed up and wrong on Miller that I just assumed that you did it. Again, I am sorry.

PS Am I correct to assume that you were the brains behind Neil's CRA endorsement effort ?

Jeff Miller's voting record-

300 Tax & Fee increases
12 eminent domain takings
opposed Tom McClintock's eminent domain reform
Ceasar Chavez holiday
$3 million of taxpayer money wasted on a utility scam

Sounds like a tried and true tax and spend liberal democrat to me.

Liberal Lurker said:

Why isn't Jeff Miller running as a democrat? His voting record sure fits our party platform to the tee.

Hillary said:

If I get the nomination for president, I am going to have Jeff Miller as my running mate. He would be the perfect person to promote all of my taxpayer funded social engineering schemes. And he already has the perfect voting record.

Just name one said:

Gary, please just tell us about one tax increase. It is obvious your band of lemmings are suffering badly from the writer's strike, because the material you twits are rolling out is pretty sad. Not even funny.

Let's hear it. What tax increase? You have 300 to chose from, naming one won't divulge too much strategy.

It is a crime to pretend to be the former First Lady. Espically if you are President of the RSM HOA.

P.S. How did that trash can vote go the other night

Jubal said:

Like I've said: if the Blais campaign commenter who posts these charges can actually substantiate them, fine. Until then, it's at best blather, at worst lies.

Blaised said:

Anon- 10:39

I know you and Neil are new to Republican politics, but Ronald Reagan has been dead for a couple of years now so it would be impossible to tell him that democrats shouldn't become republicans.

Neil was a Democrat longer than he has been a Republican and I do have evidence of that. In fact, he admitted it publically. He has never disputed it.

The true time line is that Neil took the first negative swipe at the CRA convention where he gave a negative speech and distributed negative flyers that Jubal took the time to research and discredit.

I know you have your house riding on winning this election, but lets not loose sight of what the truth is.

Country Wide Funding said:

It must be rough to take a second on your house and spend it on phony research about your opponet. You all are going to have to be writting a heck of alot more governement grants to pay for this mess.

Jubal said:

And he dodged the question when asked if he picked up the phone and talked to Blais. It looks like he didn't, and he won't. Because he can't handle the truth.

I didn't dodge anything. I didn't call Neil. His campaign accused Miller of public corruption, among other things. So I called the accused.

I'm still waiting for the Blais advisor who is posting these comments to substantiate them. Anyone can repeat a charge over and over again.

And if you're going to call the other side "children," then don't come unglued the moment some criticism comes your way.

To Tell The Truth said:

Jubal

It is impossiable to substantiate a lie. Just can't be done.

Neil and Gary said said:

I heard Miller voted for the Ceasar Chavez holiday 300 times and tried to eminent domain Tom McClintock's house to make way for a utility pole.

Slice said:

Jubal, clearly you and I are different sides of this issue. But I have always appreciated your intellectual honesty and scholarly debate on this blog and elsewhere. While I support Neil because I have known him for many years and find him to be an honest guy who I believe shares my consrvative views, I respect that you have a different opinion. Why not stop swinging at pitches in the dirt and let the idiots on both sides do each other in?
