1st Supe District Watch: Dina Took $20K Too Early

Posted by: Jubal | 03/26/2008 5:47 PM

Doh!

Peggy Lowe reports over at Total Buzz that Dina Nguyen collected nearly $20,000 in donations before she was legally able to:

Nearly $20,000 of Dina Nguyen's campaign donations are in question because of a violation of state law.

The Garden Grove councilwoman running against Supervisor Janet Nguyen in the June primary picked up 14 donations before she filed the proper paperwork. The law requires a candidate to file a Form 501 (intent to run) before requesting or accepting any contributions.

You can read the rest of Peggy's post here.

In practice, this is more of a hiccup in terms of fundraising. Dina can presumably just refund the contributions in question, which can then be re-donated.

On the perception level, it undermines the view of of the Van Tran operation as a well-oiled machine -- or in this case, perhaps too well-oiled -- and is reminiscent of Dina's false start when she tried to complete her candidate filing.

A little more attention to detail there, gang.

It is a mere technicality that she did not file the form and it is also not a very well known or in my opinion a necessary form. The form, if you look at it, is really intended for state legislators to accept or reject the expenditure limits for their races.

I have NEVER seen a case where the candidate did not complete the form ahead of time and was forced to refund the money, nor have I ever seen any enforcement associated with this form. When the error is caught, the candidate is simply required to file the form. Someone is chriping into Peggy's ear that this is a big deal when in reality it is not.

I am willing to bet $$ that many candidates forget this form until they actually go to the registrars office and file their paperwork there.

Anon,

Tomahawk is not Truong Diep. Don't try to confuse people. I know Tomahawk and you would be surpirsed to know who this person is.

Matt and Trung Diep, so many posts about the lawsuit yet when you lose you don't say anything. Why?

Anonymous said:

If that's the case why are posts that identify Tomahawk as Truong always deleted. They kinda just disappear.

And let me tell ya, I know Patriot Missile and you sir are no Patriot Missile.

Hell, ya can't even spell it right.

Excuese me, Anon at 7:21 PM! That's how I spell my handle and that's the way I wanted it. None of your business on how I spell call my handle.

Perhaps your posts have been slanderous and over the top and gotten taken down. Check yourself before blaming it on Tomahawk or Truong.

BTW, I don't appreciate being called a "Sir" when my gender requires you to call me "Mam"!

Well, genius -- maybe because I didn't see Peggy Lowe's post until I was leaving the house for the evening. Sorry I can't be at my computer 24/7 in order to satisfy you.

But Tomahawk posted it.

Everyone knows that Tomahawk is Ray Grangoff.

I'm clearly not a Dina supporter, but this is just a rookie mistake in my view. I understand the registrar has this form signed by the candidate on the day he/she pulls papers. To the extent Dina accepted donations prior to then, she probably erred. But as long as the donations are properly reported and disclosed, I'm not going to get too worked about this.

Dina's a law-breaker said:

Dina is supposed to be a lawyer, yet her first action as a candidate is to break state law! It looks like Janet may be elected outright in June after-all.

Janet's Conduct Against Dina's Donors said:

Many of Dina's donors have been reporting in that Janet Nguyen has been calling up to harrass and using strong language against them.

A number of these people are feeling threantened by Janet Nguyen and may want to contact law enforcement because of these intimidation tactics. It would be wise that Janet move on and stop harrasing Dina's donors before an incident becomes public.

Poster at 9:33PM

Don't be so sure about that. Do you remember that Janet got fined last year in hiding an illegal defense fund? Let's wait to see who will win outright on June 3rd.

cra republican said:

Dina is becoming a fast OC political celebrity figure and I am proudly supporting her.

Many republicans are eager to make contributions and vote for Dina in this Supe. election.

Flowerszzz said:

Actually anon @ 9:53 I have heard rumors like this about Janet for years. I do know that when Dina was running for council some of this was rumored to be happening as well. Unless someone comes forward, no one will ever truly know.

Dina's a Law Breaker said:

Dina is a laughing stock, being used by Tran and his group. She is making herself liable to legal action and losing her law license. Not too smart on her part.

Anonymous said:

Vietnamese donors have been calling into Dina's camp within the last 24 hours saying that Janet Nguyen has been phoning them and issuing veiled threats and being extremely confrontational.

Janet Nguyen should be very careful by staying well within legal boundaries and cease from doing this, immediately. She will be reported to the police by the donors if they or their business feel threatened or intimidated by her.

Desperation and fair competition is one thing, but crossing the legal line in fund solicitation is another matter totally.

Flowerszzz said:

Anonymous - calling Dinas office is all well and good BUT if this is happening they need to file a complaint with the DA's office, call the paper, and go on record stating that this has happened.

cra republican said:

"Dina's law...." aka Janet's little siblings., if Dina is just a laughing stock..as you have said;

Why are you so worried about her? Why are you wetting your pants?

Anonymous said:

Flowerszz,

What makes you think a complaint against Janet have not been filed already? Keep it up and see what will happen.

Jubal said:

I'm tempted to add a special rule for comments on 1st District related posts: no stupid comments allowed.

I have been running this blog for nearly 4 years, and have read literally tens of thousands of comments. And the comments made by the pro-Dina and anti-Janet commenters are easily the stupidest I have ever seen.

You guys only succeed in making your candidate look bad because you all come off as illiterate kooks.

Just. Stop. it.

Anonymous said:

Jubal,

being stupid, in your opinion, is just your opinion, but much more importantly, it's protected by the First Amedndment of the US Constitution. Let a thousand flowers, even unpleasant ones, bloom on this blog.

Flowerszzz said:

LOL - anonymous I support Dina dumba$$. And yes you can say what you want but please stop sounding like 12 year olds. I said it earlier today why is it when a discussion about any of the Nguyens comes up, it turns into a teenaged girl gossip fest?

If someone is experiencing voter or donor intimidation please encourage them to come forward.

Jubal said:

No, I'd say the stupidity of many of these comments is a self-evident fact.

As for the 1st Amendment, it has no bearing here.

just...asking? said:

Jubal/Matt,

I've been visiting to read the 1st district drivel for several weeks now and find it very amusing.

I must say these threads don't seem to meet the same level of quality or even button pushing sarcasm as the rest of your site.

I have to ask, do you have a different level of quality control when it comes to trannie inflamed subjects? It would seem so...but hey I'm just...asking?

Flowerszzz said:

"People" I love the fact that you do not pay attention whatsoever. I suggest you go back and read what I wrote again. And BTW I did not ask anyone to tell ME I said to please file a complaint with the DA or call the paper...have them come forward.

Just Answering said:

Just Asking,

You have been making derogatory comments, regardless of the facts staring you in the face, against Dina and Trung almost every time you blog on the 1st Dist. Your bias is clear. So, don't go on the blog and start preaching your false message about this subject.

Go ask Janet Nguyen what she did to be caught in such a rock and a hard place. It's pathetic that you don't have much to say other than attempt to be patronizing about the quality of the posts.

Anonymous said:

Jubal,
I am a huge fan of this blog. I understand your posts are intended to be informative and for the most part are: but a little entertainment goes a long way. So, let the Nguyens go at it !!!!!!!! It makes good reading, fun, and some comic relief during the tough days at the office. In fact I think Janet and Dina should sponsor a mud wrestling match as a fund raiser and split the proceeds. It would be a "Nguyen-Nguyen". They both would make some money and the rest of us would continue to be entertained.
