Who'll Pick The Sheriff?

Posted by: Jubal | 02/06/2008 1:36 PM

The Association of Orange County Deputy Sheriffs yesterday released the results of its public opinion poll on what Orange Countians want in their new Sheriff. The AOCDS also published the results of its membership preference survey regarding six announced wanna-be Sheriffs.

Both tout Bill Hunt as the "top choice" to be Mike Carona's permanent replacement, but the results are hardly overwhelming.

Among AOCDS members, Hunt barely edges out Santa Ana Police Chief Paul Walters:

Bill Hunt       460 votes     41.55%

Paul Walters  444 votes     40.11%

That result is more accurately characterized as a dead heat, rather than a clear preference for Hunt.

Keep in mind that when Hunt won the AOCDS endorsement over Sheriff Carona in 2006, he received 48% of AOCDS member votes. Two year later, that support has slipped to 41% against Walters, who won the AOCDS endorsement way back in 1998 and endorsed Carona for re-election in 2006.

As for the public opinion survey, I think its useful as a guide to what they want -- and don't want -- the next sheriff to be. The 70% who said they prefer a candidate with no connection to Carona certainly isn't good news for Acting Sheriff Jack Anderson. But it's not unmitigated good news for Hunt, either. Hunt praised Carona and angled to get his endorsement...until the time Carona broke his two-term pledge and ran for a third term.

But in the absence of any active political campaign by any of the would-be sheriffs, its of very limited utility as a guide to popular preference. Hunt only registered 15% support, and Walters garnered 10%.

I think AOCDS would have made better use of their money by delaying these surveys until a more complete picture emerged as to who the contenders for the job are. As it is, the results probably help Walters more than Hunt, since Hunt has virtually zero chance of getting the appointment, while Walters is a more realistic possibility.

Probably not going to be a "dead heat" as far as who the AOCDS is going to endorse (See LAT article today's date)I think any connection that Hunt had with Team Carona has long since been eliminated. No mystery in the the 4% drop either. Walters wasn't in the running in 2006. AOCDS is in it for the local people who have proven political support. The Supes are politicians. As far as that goes I willing to bet some more organizations(read voting blocks) are going to step to the plate to let the Supes know what they think. Until then my crystal ball is not working.

Chief Paul Walters would make an excellent Sheriff. Santa Ana's loss could be the County's gain.

The poll is interesting. There were really three (Hunt, Hunter, and Walters) who it seemed the voters would consider.. The others lagged quite a bit behind. All three are from OC and at least two have no onection to Carona (maybe) With all of the baggage discussed with Walters and Hunt, where does that leave Anaheim's Hunter?

ORGCO50. I don't think Hunt has any baggage that deserves any merit otherwise Carona would of given it to him in a hand basket. I also don't know if what has been said about Walters is true. I think both of them are real cops that are somewhat adverse to politics. This Hunter fellow seems to have a resume but as far as I can tell that's the extent most know about him. For now Hunt and Walters seem to have most of the public's support and I don't think that will ever change even if the Supes do a worldwide search.I'm thinking the Supes would be remiss if they didn't believe there are a whole bunch of voters(of all flavors)quitely watching what they are doing on this issue. Should be interesting

Am I reading a different public opinion poll than all of you? I read the following numbers:

Hunt 14%
Anderson 11%
Walters 10%
Hunter 6%
Martin 2%
Storm 2%

That leaves 50% undecided and 5% who refused/declined to state.

With all due respect to Jubal, He says that Hunt "only" registered 15%. That is top of the line. Then he says the news is not good for(establishment) Anderson but not "unmitigated" good news for Hunt. Let's face the facts. Hunt nailed it. I can understand this is only a blog without the journalistic impartiality expected from the newspapers and mainstream media but call it like it is and deal with it. If anybody else is in the mix, fine, lets deal with them too. Simple

I think the BOS are intelligent enough to realize how skewed and slanted the so-called "Public Opinion Poll" was. All they need to do is to read all of it, not just the parts the Hunt supporters want to spew.

At the beginning of the "survey", Anderson faired well at 11%, while Hunt was only slightly ahead with 14%. Walters was a close third at 10%.

Remember 50% were undecided and 5% chose to decline.

Then, in the last part of the so-called poll, there were all sorts of loaded questions and interesting statements in order to obtain the results they desired. It is quite obvious they were doing their best to describe everyone,(especially Hunt) EXCEPT for Anderson. Just take a look at all of the positive adjectives they used for everyone EXCEPT Anderson. I guess the know they cannot manipulate him.

Shame on you AOCDS! I am so disappointed in your tactics. I guess you were too scared to play on a level playing field. Doing that as well as intimidating your members to follow along like sheep are what gives you a bad name.

Remember everyone's cry that they want an ethical, fair and honest Sheriff. I guess not everyone plays it ethically, fair and honestly, especially AOCDS.

I think people forget that AOCDS gave very little warning to the candidates that they were conducting this poll. When they contacted Anderson he actually submitted a statement asking them NOT to conduct the poll. That alone probably hurt his chances in this popularity poll.

I think Anderson was right. This poll was premature and doesn't serve much of a purpose.

Hilarious! He has so much baggage he should be called American Tourister.

Did Hunt use his crystal ball to make all his Carona predictions... or was he just really close to scum like Jaramillo and Cavallo?

He probably doesn't want us to know that, huh? I guess we are all supposed to forget about that.

Okay, so now you can tell me all about Hunt's psychic abilities.

I just read that public opinion poll. What a joke! The way they wrote out the questions and the descriptions of the candidates were so biased, I could not believe it.

They must think we are pretty stupid not to figure that one out.

You would think AOCDS would appear to be a little more fair and impartial. HA! This kind of stunt really leaves a bad impression. Not very professional at all, not to mention pretty immature at that.

The sad thing is how many people will not figure out they are being duped. It's also sad to see how low people are willing to go.

Bill Hunt is the best candidate for Sheriff. He was an excellent Chief of Police Services in San Clemente. If Mike would have not run as promised Bill would be our Sheriff!!!!!!. Paul is a good Chief Of Police for Santa Ana. I wonder if he would put on hold his pension form Santa Ana or would he be a double dipper ?

Hunt had and always will have problems with self control. Had he been able to control himself, he would not have run for Sheriff last time around. Then you are right Mr. Dahl, he probably would be in a much better position to become Sheriff.

Thank you Mr. Hunt for showing us and Sheriff Carona your true colors, that you are not fit to do the job due to your own large ego.

Why do you care if he is double-dipping? Did he not earn his first pension?
